SC Villa Beat Express 2-0: Jogoos Win Kampala Derby

SC Villa defeated Express FC 2-0 at Wankulukuku as Patrick Kakande and Andrew Otim scored to secure Kampala Derby bragging rights.

SC Villa continued their promising start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over traditional rivals Express FC in the Kampala Derby at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Patrick Jonah Kakande gave the Jogoos an early advantage before Andrew Otim sealed the result in stoppage time. The victory moved Villa to seven points from their opening three league matches and extended their positive recent record against the Red Eagles, according to Kawowo Sports.

For Express, it was a frustrating afternoon. Morley Byekwaso’s side created opportunities to equalise but lacked the finishing touch when their best openings arrived.

SC Villa Strike Early at Wankulukuku

Villa entered the derby following a 1-0 victory over URA, while Express had restored confidence by defeating KCCA 2-0 in their previous outing. The stage was therefore set for another competitive chapter in one of Ugandan football’s oldest rivalries.

The Jogoos immediately imposed themselves.

Arnold Odong almost opened the scoring in the second minute when he connected with Reagan Mpande’s delivery but directed his header narrowly wide.

Villa did not have to wait much longer.

Kakande found space inside the penalty area and converted from close range following an Ibrahim Kasinde delivery from the right. The early breakthrough forced Express to chase the contest almost immediately.

Mpande threatened to increase the advantage in the 21st minute, firing a powerful long-range attempt narrowly wide.

Express Waste Chances to Respond

Despite Villa’s impressive opening, Express gradually grew into the derby.

Nicholas Jjonga capitalised on a defensive mistake and found Isaac Wagoina in a promising position, but the Red Eagles were unable to turn the opportunity into an equaliser.

Express became increasingly dangerous after the interval.

Shafik Batambuze delivered an inviting cross towards Wagoina in the 66th minute, but the striker’s header went wide when Express desperately needed a clinical finish.

Peter Onzima also threatened after combining with Abasi Muluya. His low ball travelled dangerously across Villa’s goalmouth without an Express player arriving to finish.

Those missed opportunities ultimately proved expensive.

Villa Manage Derby Pressure

SC Villa coach Zeljko Kovacevic had warned before the fixture that Express possessed experienced players and would provide a difficult test. His assessment proved accurate once the Red Eagles increased the pressure after halftime.

Villa nevertheless showed composure when the momentum changed.

The Jogoos had made several alterations during the second half, and Express temporarily gained greater control. Instead of allowing the match to become completely stretched, Villa protected their narrow advantage and remained capable of threatening on transitions.

Their defensive resilience was particularly important because Express had enough possession and deliveries into dangerous areas to change the contest.

Andrew Otim Seals Victory

Express continued searching for an equaliser deep into the contest, leaving spaces for Villa to exploit.

The decisive second goal arrived in stoppage time.

It ended any remaining Express hopes and ensured the Jogoos collected all three points.

SC Villa’s Strong Start Continues

The result leaves Villa unbeaten after their opening three league matches.

They started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Kitara, followed by a 1-0 victory over URA, and have now added a derby triumph over Express.

That sequence gives Kovacevic’s team seven points from a possible nine.

More importantly, Villa have conceded only once across those three fixtures. Their ability to collect points while maintaining defensive discipline could become important as the season develops.

Kakande’s contribution also offers encouragement. The attacking midfielder remains one of Villa’s most technically gifted players, and delivering the opening goal in such an important derby underlines his potential influence this season.

Express Must Improve Their Finishing

Express leave Wankulukuku with plenty to consider.

The Red Eagles have now lost two of their first three matches, having suffered defeat against BUL on Matchday One before responding with the impressive 2-0 victory over KCCA.

Their performance against Villa was not without positives.

Wagoina remained a threat, Batambuze provided dangerous deliveries, and Express enjoyed periods when they forced their opponents backwards.

The problem was converting those promising situations.

Derbies are often decided by small moments, and Villa were simply more clinical when their opportunities arrived.

Take-Home

SC Villa leave the Kampala Derby with more than three points. Victory over one of their oldest rivals strengthens confidence in an unbeaten start that has produced seven points from three matches.

Express will regret their missed opportunities, particularly during their stronger second-half spell. Byekwaso’s side demonstrated that they could trouble Villa but lacked the decisive finish required to turn pressure into goals.

For Villa, Kakande supplied the early breakthrough, and Otim delivered the final blow. A 2-0 derby victory, another clean sheet and seven points from nine represent an encouraging opening to the Jogoos’ 2026/27 campaign.
