Isaac Wagoina and Derrick Ddungu, popularly known as Rickman, scored as Express defeated KCCA 2-0 at Nakivubo to claim their first win of the 2026/27 UPL season.
The Red Eagles recovered from their opening-day defeat to BUL FC by producing a disciplined second-half performance under head coach Morley Byekwaso.
KCCA created the better opportunities before the break but failed to convert them. That wastefulness proved costly when Wagoina broke the deadlock six minutes after halftime, before Rickman completed the victory from the bench.
The result gave Express their first three points of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season. KCCA, meanwhile, have lost their opening two matches without scoring.

KCCA Waste Early Opportunities
KCCA arrived at Nakivubo determined to respond after losing 2-0 against NEC FC in their opening league match at Lugogo.
Brian Ssenyondo’s side started positively and caused problems whenever they moved the ball into the Express defensive third. However, goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya repeatedly protected the hosts.
Shafik Nana Kwikiriza forced Kigonya into an important save before the experienced goalkeeper also denied Charles Lwanga.
Saidi Mayanja went even closer when his attempt struck the woodwork. KCCA had controlled important periods of the first half, but their lack of a finishing touch left the match goalless at the interval.
Express occasionally struggled to play through KCCA’s pressure. However, the Red Eagles remained organised and survived the visitors’ strongest period without conceding.
That resilience provided the foundation for a much-improved second-half display.

Wagoina Punishes KCCA
Express took the lead in the 51st minute through returning forward Isaac Wagoina.
Aaron Mutebi identified space behind the KCCA defence and delivered a well-weighted pass into Wagoina’s path. The forward got ahead of Maxwell Owachgiu before calmly placing his finish beyond goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugolofa.
It was an important goal for a player who returned to Express after spending two seasons with BUL FC.
The opener changed the direction of the contest. KCCA had to push more players forward in search of an equaliser, allowing Express to attack the spaces left behind.
Byekwaso’s players defended with greater confidence and looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack.
Henry Wamala nearly doubled the advantage after lifting the ball over the advancing Mugolofa, but his attempt struck the post.

Rickman Marks Express Debut with Goal
The decisive moment arrived when Derrick Ddungu entered the match as a substitute for Steven Yiga.
Only five minutes after coming on, the musician and footballer found space at a difficult angle and drove a shot past Mugolofa at the near post.
KCCA’s defenders failed to close him down quickly enough, while the goalkeeper was unable to prevent the attempt from squeezing inside his near post.
The goal triggered passionate celebrations from Ddungu and his teammates. It represented an emotional return to competitive football after a knee injury ended his spell in Sweden in 2016 and pushed him towards a music career.
His debut goal was also celebrated by musician Bebe Cool, who attended the match to support his son Alpha Thierry Ssali. Alpha featured for Express against his former club and produced several promising attacking moments before being substituted.
According to the Sports Nation Uganda match report, Ddungu’s strike sealed Express’ first victory of the campaign. The result was also reported by Kawowo Sports.
What the Result Means for Express
Express now have three points from two matches, with two goals scored and one conceded.
The response was particularly encouraging after the Red Eagles began their season with a 1-0 defeat away to BUL in Njeru.
Byekwaso will be pleased with his side’s defensive organisation, ability to survive difficult moments and improved attacking efficiency after halftime.
Wagoina’s movement gives Express a proven threat in the final third, while Ddungu’s dramatic debut provides another attacking option. Kigonya’s saves were equally important and allowed Express to remain competitive before taking control.

Pressure Builds on KCCA
KCCA have started the season with consecutive 2-0 defeats against NEC and Express.
The Cityzens have conceded four goals and are yet to score despite creating several presentable opportunities. Their finishing at Nakivubo was the clearest difference between the teams.
Ssenyondo must now improve both defensive concentration and attacking efficiency. KCCA showed signs of creativity through Kwikiriza, Lwanga and Mayanja, but promising passages of play will matter little without goals and points.
For a club carrying expectations of competing for the championship, two defeats from two matches represent an alarming start.

Conclusion
Express were not the dominant team throughout the Kampala derby, but they were more resilient and clinical when the decisive moments arrived.
Kigonya kept the Red Eagles in contention during KCCA’s strong first half before Wagoina converted Mutebi’s pass and Ddungu completed a memorable debut with the second goal.
Express leave Nakivubo with renewed confidence and their first victory of the season. KCCA leave with bigger questions after a second consecutive defeat, four goals conceded, and none scored.
