Cromwell Rwothomio scored in the 82nd minute as Lugazi defeated Entebbe UPPC 1-0 at Hamz Stadium, handing the hosts their first loss of the 2026/27 UPL season.
Lugazi FC brought Entebbe UPPC’s unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Wednesday.
Cromwell Rwothomio delivered the decisive moment in the 82nd minute, beating the offside trap before firing through goalkeeper Denis Otim’s legs to earn Lugazi all three points.
The result represented an important response from Abbey Kikomeko Bogere’s side following their 3-1 defeat against NEC in their previous league outing.
For Entebbe UPPC, however, it was a frustrating afternoon in which several promising opportunities went unfinished.
Entebbe UPPC Start on the Front Foot
Entebbe UPPC entered Matchday Three with considerable confidence following their impressive beginning to life in the top flight.
Abdul Mubiru’s side immediately looked for an opening against Lugazi.
Ibrahim Orit supplied a cross from the left after ten minutes, but Ronald Kayondo headed over from inside the area. Ibrahim Mugulusi then failed to hit the target after receiving a cutback from Kayondo five minutes later.
Ambrose Kigozi was next to threaten, sending an effort over from Gift Jonathan Odongo’s delivery.
Kigozi also received a free-kick opportunity after Kelvin Barni was fouled approximately 25 yards from goal, but his attempt sailed over.
The hosts were creating openings without producing the clinical final touch required to establish control.
Lugazi Stay in the Contest
Lugazi were not as threatening during the opening exchanges but remained organised.
Dickson Mataama registered an effort that was comfortably collected by goalkeeper Otim, while Entebbe continued searching for a breakthrough at the opposite end.
Orit repeatedly attempted to create danger with deliveries from the left, but Lugazi’s defence survived.
Entebbe were forced into an early alteration when Orit was withdrawn for Steven Munguchi in the 38th minute.
The sides consequently entered halftime goalless, leaving everything to play for after the break.

Changes as Both Teams Chase Victory
Lugazi made an immediate second-half adjustment as Brian Ade replaced Adam Mutesasiira.
Captain Richard Ayiko was subsequently booked for a foul on Entebbe playmaker Reich Triomphe Kokolo.
Kikomeko continued changing his attacking options, introducing Frank Mulimi for Jeremy Matata around the hour mark.
Entebbe responded with an attacking alteration of their own. Julius Poloto replaced Sharifu Ssengendo in the 63rd minute as Mubiru searched for the goal that would protect his team’s unbeaten start.
Neither side could initially find a decisive opening.
Kayondo Denied by the Crossbar
Entebbe’s best opportunity arrived in the 74th minute.
Kayondo unleashed a powerful effort from approximately 30 yards, forcing Lugazi goalkeeper Tonny Kyamera into an important intervention.
Kyamera pushed the ball onto the crossbar before recovering possession, denying the hosts what appeared to be their best chance of breaking the deadlock.
That save became even more significant eight minutes later.
Lugazi defender Emmanuel Munoobi was meanwhile forced off with an apparent hamstring problem, with Vincent Zziwa taking his place.
Rwothomio Punishes Entebbe UPPC
With eight minutes of normal time remaining, Rwothomio finally transformed the contest.
The experienced Lugazi forward timed his movement behind the Entebbe defence, beat the offside trap and drove a powerful finish through Otim’s legs to make it 1-0 in the 82nd minute.
It was exactly the ruthless finishing that Entebbe had lacked earlier.
Mubiru reacted by introducing Noordin Saddic Bunjo and Hassan Ssenyonjo as the hosts desperately searched for an equaliser.
Instead, Rwothomio almost struck again.
The Lugazi forward found himself one-on-one with Otim but this time directed his effort at the goalkeeper. Lugazi nevertheless protected their narrow advantage through the closing minutes to secure an important away victory.

The victory was particularly valuable for Lugazi because it came away from home against a side that had enjoyed an impressive opening to the campaign.
Rwothomio Makes the Difference
Rwothomio’s performance demonstrated why experienced forwards can be decisive in tight league matches.
Entebbe enjoyed several opportunities before Lugazi scored, but football ultimately rewards conversion rather than simply territorial pressure.
Kyamera also deserves significant credit.
His intervention to push Kayondo’s long-range effort onto the crossbar prevented Entebbe from taking the lead only eight minutes before Rwothomio struck at the other end.
For Lugazi, those two moments effectively decided the afternoon.

What Entebbe UPPC Must Improve
The defeat should not erase Entebbe’s encouraging early-season performances, but their finishing will be an obvious area for review.
Kayondo, Mugulusi and Kigozi all found themselves in promising situations without producing a goal. Orit’s deliveries also gave Lugazi problems before his first-half substitution.
Mubiru’s challenge is therefore to maintain the attacking creativity while improving efficiency inside and around the penalty area.
Their defensive concentration late in matches will also require attention after Rwothomio exploited the decisive opening.

Take-Home
Lugazi’s victory was built on patience, defensive resilience and one clinical moment.
Entebbe UPPC had opportunities to take control, particularly through Kayondo’s 74th-minute strike, but Kyamera’s save kept Lugazi alive before Rwothomio delivered the decisive blow.
For Kikomeko’s side, the 1-0 away victory provides an important early-season lift. Entebbe, meanwhile, must regroup after their first defeat and turn promising attacking positions into goals as their maiden Uganda Premier League campaign continues.
