Entebbe UPPC stunned defending champions Vipers 1-0 at Kitende after Kevin DaSylva Bady’s own goal decided their 2026/27 UPL opener.
Entebbe UPPC produced the first major upset of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season by defeating defending champions Vipers SC 1-0 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The match, played on Friday, August 28, 2026, was decided by Kevin DaSylva Bady’s own goal in the 32nd minute. The Vipers defender inadvertently turned Thomas Ochungo’s dangerous cross beyond goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba while attempting to clear the ball.
UPPC protected their narrow advantage with a disciplined defensive performance, leaving Vipers to begin their title defence with an unexpected home defeat.
Match Summary: Vipers 0-1 Entebbe UPPC
Vipers entered the opening day fixture as favourites after winning the Uganda Premier League title with 67 points last season. The Venoms had also beaten Entebbe UPPC at home and away during that championship campaign.
However, Entebbe UPPC refused to be intimidated by the champions or the atmosphere at Kitende.
The visitors were rewarded after Ochungo advanced down the left flank and delivered a threatening ball into the Vipers penalty area. Under pressure, DaSylva Bady diverted it into his own net to give UPPC the decisive lead.
According to the Kawowo Sports match report, UPPC remained organised after scoring and occasionally threatened through quick counterattacks.
Entebbe UPPC’s Defensive Discipline Makes the Difference
Goalkeeper Denis Otim and the UPPC defence were central to the victory. Captain George Kiryowa led a back line that restricted Vipers’ attacking players and protected the visitors’ penalty area effectively.
Jonathan Odongo, Thomas Ochungo, Tah Barni Kelvin and Emmanuel Lisat also contributed to the defensive effort, while Steven Munguchi helped protect the midfield.
UPPC did more than simply defend. Ibrahim Mugulusi, Ibrahim Orit and Reich Kokolo gave the visitors energy and composure in possession. Mugulusi was particularly important when UPPC attempted to move forward on the counterattack.
The visitors remained patient during the closing stages, clearing dangerous deliveries and refusing to lose their defensive shape as Vipers searched for an equaliser.

Vipers Struggle to Create Clear Chances
Vipers fielded an experienced side featuring Farouk Miya, Gusto Mulongo, Karim Watambala and Chukwuma Odili, but the champions struggled to turn possession into clear scoring opportunities.
Miya, Mulongo and Odili found little space against UPPC’s compact defensive structure. Although Vipers introduced fresh players during the second half, the changes did not produce the goal required to rescue a point.
The result gave new Vipers head coach Denis Lavagne a disappointing beginning to his Uganda Premier League tenure. His immediate task will be improving his team’s creativity and attacking sharpness while ensuring the setback does not affect confidence.
The Sports Nation Uganda report notes that this was Vipers’ first home league defeat since a 1-0 loss to KCCA in March 2024.
Historic Victory for Entebbe UPPC
For Entebbe UPPC, the result represents one of the club’s biggest victories since earning promotion to Uganda’s top division.
There were emotional celebrations involving players, supporters and the technical team at full-time. Coaches Abdallah Mubiru and Livingston Mbabazi had an additional reason to celebrate because both previously worked at Vipers.
Defeating the reigning champions away from home also provides early evidence that UPPC can compete against the league’s strongest teams. The performance combined tactical discipline, determination and efficient use of a crucial attacking opportunity.
However, one victory does not guarantee a successful campaign. UPPC must reproduce the same concentration and organisation across the season if they are to build on their impressive opening result.
What the Result Means for Vipers
An opening-day defeat will not determine the destination of the Uganda Premier League title, but Vipers have received an early warning about the difficulty of defending their crown.
Opponents are likely to adopt compact defensive systems at Kitende and challenge the Venoms to break them down. Vipers must therefore develop greater movement, faster passing and more variety in the final third.
The champions also need to respond quickly. Strong title-winning teams are often judged by how they recover from setbacks rather than their ability to avoid every defeat.

Verdict
Entebbe UPPC deserved their historic victory after producing a courageous and tactically disciplined performance. Ochungo created the decisive moment, while Otim and the visiting defence ensured DaSylva Bady’s own goal was enough to secure all three points.
Vipers controlled periods of the match but did not create enough quality chances to overturn the deficit. The result gives UPPC a memorable start while forcing the champions to address their attacking weaknesses early in the season.
