Real Madrid begin their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign against Serie A champions Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The heavyweight contest marks José Mourinho’s first Champions League match since returning to Madrid. It also reunites him with Inter, the club he guided to a historic Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia treble in 2009/10.

Madrid needs an immediate response after suffering their first defeat of the season against Real Betis. Inter arrive in Spain with a perfect domestic record after winning their opening three Serie A matches.

Major European Night for Ugandan Supporters

Real Madrid command a huge following across Uganda, making this a standout opening-week fixture for supporters in Kampala, Jinja, Gulu and Mbarara. The 10:00 pm East Africa Time kick-off is convenient for fans watching from home, sports bars and viewing centres. Inter also has loyal Ugandan followers, particularly among supporters of Italian football.

Mourinho Begins New Champions League Mission

The Champions League was the major trophy Mourinho failed to win during his first Madrid spell between 2010 and 2013. However, he rejects suggestions that he must correct that record.

“What I need to do now has nothing to do with the past,” Mourinho said. Madrid want to win every competition but must develop stability and structure.

Madrid won their first three LaLiga matches before losing 1-0 at Betis, where Kylian Mbappé missed a late penalty.

Madrid have completed two seasons without a major trophy and are pursuing their first Champions League crown since 2024.

According to the official Real Madrid preview, this is the club’s 57th European Cup campaign. Madrid will also host Leipzig, PSV and LASK during the league phase.

Confident Inter Present Serious Threat

Inter have started impressively under Cristian Chivu, winning their opening three Serie A matches to move level with Roma at the top of the standings.

Inter demonstrated character by recovering from two goals down to defeat Napoli 3-2. Lautaro Martínez scored twice, and Marcus Thuram added another.

Lautaro and Thuram combine movement, strength and clinical finishing, while Nicolò Barella and Hakan Çalhanoğlu can control possession or launch counterattacks.

Inter’s advancing wing-backs could leave spaces for Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé during transitions.

Real Madrid vs Inter Team News

Madrid have several absentees for their European opener. UEFA’s Matchday news guide lists Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva as suspended.

Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão, Rodrygo and Thiago Pitarch are injured. Aurélien Tchouaméni is doubtful, while Endrick is returning to fitness.

Mourinho could use Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham centrally, with Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella as wing-backs.

Inter have fewer selection problems. Federico Dimarco is doubtful because of a knee complaint, but Chivu otherwise has most of his senior options available.

Predicted Line-ups

Real Madrid: Courtois; Konaté, Rüdiger, Huijsen; Dumfries, Valverde, Bellingham, Brahim Díaz, Cucurella; Vinícius Júnior, Mbappé.

Inter Milan: Martínez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Zieliński, Dimarco; Lautaro Martínez, Thuram.

The final teams remain subject to late fitness assessments and tactical changes.

Real Madrid vs Inter Head-to-Head

Real Madrid and Inter Milan have met 13 times in European competition, with the Spanish giants controlling their most recent encounters.

Madrid won all four Champions League meetings played between the clubs in 2020 and 2021. Inter failed to score in the last three, although their current attacking form suggests they could present a stronger challenge this time.

Across those four matches, Real Madrid scored eight goals and conceded only two. The record gives Mourinho’s side a psychological advantage, but historical results do not guarantee the outcome of Tuesday’s contest.

Players to Watch

Kylian Mbappé will seek a response after his Betis penalty miss. His movement behind Inter’s defence could decide the contest.

Vinícius Júnior is a dangerous one-on-one attacker whose combination with Mbappé can expose Inter’s back three.

Lautaro Martínez arrives after scoring twice against Napoli. His movement and finishing will test Madrid’s reshaped defence.

Jude Bellingham may play deeper, although his forward runs remain an important source of chances.

Prediction and Betting Insights

Madrid’s home advantage and strong recent head-to-head record make a home victory worth considering. However, Inter’s perfect start and Madrid’s defensive absences increase the possibility of the visitors scoring.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals are alternative markets supported by the attacking talent available. A more careful consideration is Real Madrid double chance combined with over 1.5 goals.

Every selection carries risk, particularly in an opening Champions League fixture.

Conclusion

Inter have the organisation and attacking quality to trouble Madrid, especially if Mourinho’s depleted midfield loses control.

Nevertheless, the Bernabéu atmosphere and Madrid’s attacking quality may provide the decisive advantage. Ugandan supporters should expect an intense contest.

Final prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan.
