Police FC and UPDF FC settled for a goalless draw after failing to convert several promising opportunities in their 2026/27 Uganda Premier League Armed Forces derby.
Played at the Kiira Road Police Arena in Kamwokya on Thursday, September 10, the Matchday Three contest produced determined defending but no decisive finishing.
Police created chances through Ivan Mayanja, Samuel Kayongo Ssekamatte and Lawrence Tezikya. UPDF’s best chance came from Shafik Kakande, but the goal-line effort was cleared.
The result moved Police to four points from three league matches. UPDF remained without a victory but collected their second point of the campaign, according to the Police versus UPDF match report.

Police Make the Brighter Start
Police registered the first notable chance in the 17th minute. Mayanja found space to shoot, but his attempt was deflected behind for a corner.
The midfielder remained involved and later created an opening for new signing Ssekamatte. The forward tried to finish inside a crowded penalty area, only for several UPDF defenders to block his effort.
Police goalkeeper Hadji Shukuru then required attention after suffering a head knock in a challenge involving Kakande. He recovered and completed the match, helping the hosts register a clean sheet.
Although Police enjoyed encouraging attacking moments, their final passes and shots lacked the accuracy required to break through UPDF’s compact defensive structure.
Jakony Denies UPDF’s Best Chance
UPDF came closest to scoring around the half-hour mark. Kakande connected with a half-volley that beat Shukuru, but Police defender Daniel Jakony reacted quickly to clear the ball off the line.
The intervention was one of the game’s defining moments. Had the effort crossed the line, Police would have been forced to chase an equaliser against a team comfortable defending narrow spaces.
Police left-back Farouk Matovu also threatened in the 35th minute, although his goal-bound attempt was blocked.
UPDF forward Derrick Taremwa received the first yellow card shortly before half-time following a foul on Shukuru. The sides consequently entered the interval level at 0-0.

Substitutions Fail to Produce Breakthrough
Police head coach Matia Lule introduced Lawrence Tezikya for Rogers Kiwanuka at the beginning of the second half as he searched for greater attacking energy.
Ten minutes later, towering Congolese forward Ibedia Ikamba replaced Dennis Ojara. Ikamba offered Police a stronger aerial target, while Charles Bbaale and Emmanuel Mugume were later introduced for Ssekamatte and Mayanja.
The changes almost delivered a goal in the 73rd minute. Stephen Namaisi supplied an inviting cross from the right, but Ikamba failed to direct his free header on target.
UPDF coach Hussein Mbalangu also changed his attack. Taremwa made way for Rashid, while Ineah replaced Kakande before later leaving the field on a stretcher. Julius Mukwaya Waswa took his place.
Mukwaya attempted two shots without finding the target and was subsequently booked for a challenge on Police midfielder Siraje Sentamu.
Tezikya Misses Late Opportunity
Police had one final chance to win the derby during added time. Tezikya received the ball in a promising position but directed his shot straight at UPDF goalkeeper Shamulan Kamya.
Kamya gathered comfortably, bringing an end to both teams’ hopes of securing maximum points.
The final whistle confirmed a result that reflected the match’s defensive discipline and attacking wastefulness. Police had enough opportunities to win, particularly through Ikamba’s free header and Tezikya’s late effort, but UPDF also had reason to regret Jakony’s goal-line clearance.

What the Result Means
Police have now collected four points from their opening three matches. The Cops demonstrated greater defensive stability after their earlier setback against Blacks Power, but improving their finishing remains an important priority.
UPDF are still searching for their first league victory after three games. However, earning a point away from home and keeping a clean sheet provided Mbalangu’s team with something positive to build on.
The visitors defended with commitment and carried a threat on transitions. Their next challenge is turning competitive performances into victories.

Conclusion
The Armed Forces derby delivered commitment, physical battles and several promising chances, but neither Police nor UPDF produced the decisive finish.
Police may view the result as two points missed after creating late opportunities. UPDF, meanwhile, can take encouragement from a disciplined away performance and their first clean sheet of the campaign.
Both teams must now improve in front of goal if they are to turn competitive displays into consistent Uganda Premier League victories.
