Uganda Hippos will seek to finish their 2026 CECAFA U20 Championship campaign positively when they face Burundi in the third-place playoff at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The bronze-medal contest will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 pm East African Time. Tanzania and Sudan will meet in the final at the same venue later in the afternoon.

Both Uganda and Burundi entered the tournament hoping to secure qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations U20 finals. Those ambitions ended in the semi-finals, where Uganda lost 3-2 to Sudan before hosts Tanzania defeated Burundi 2-0.

Thursday’s encounter is therefore about pride, a bronze medal and ending an otherwise encouraging regional campaign with a victory.

The final between Tanzania and Sudan is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm EAT. Both finalists have already qualified for the 2027 AFCON U20 tournament in Ghana.

Uganda’s Route to the Bronze Playoff

Uganda began the tournament impressively under head coach Laryea Kingston. The Hippos defeated Djibouti 4-1 in their opening Group B match before beating Sudan 1-0 to finish top of the group with six points.

Those two victories gave Uganda a perfect group-stage record of five goals scored and only one conceded. Substitute Amour Munogera scored the decisive goal in the group meeting with Sudan.

The semi-final produced a much different contest. Richard Okello gave Uganda an early lead, but Sudan responded through Rudman Yahya Mohamed Ishag, captain Waheed Shandi Somi Elbadri and Mazin Fadul Albahli Taowr.

Derrick Ssozi scored Uganda’s second goal, but the Hippos could not complete a comeback and eventually lost 3-2.

The defeat was particularly disappointing because Uganda had already beaten Sudan during the group stage. However, the semi-final showed how quickly momentum can change in knockout football.

Kingston’s players must now recover mentally and avoid carrying that disappointment into the Burundi game.

Burundi’s Strong Group-Stage Campaign

Burundi also reached the semi-finals with a perfect record. They opened their Group C campaign by beating South Sudan 4-0 before recording a 2-0 victory over Kenya.

Those results gave Burundi six points, six goals and two clean sheets. Captain Amini Nshimirimana played a leading role, scoring twice against Kenya and establishing himself among the tournament’s leading scorers.

Burundi’s progress was halted by hosts Tanzania in the semi-final. Juma Abushiri scored directly from a corner before Faraji Kayanda added the second goal in a 2-0 victory.

Despite that defeat, Burundi have demonstrated that they are organised defensively and dangerous when their attacking players find space.

Uganda cannot approach the bronze playoff as a formality. Burundi’s group-stage record and Nshimirimana’s scoring form underline the threat they carry.

Previous Bronze Meeting Favours Uganda

The two countries also met in the third-place playoff during the 2024 CECAFA U20 qualifiers.

Burundi opened the scoring through Ramazani Hakizimana, but Uganda recovered to win 3-1. Abubakali Walusimbi equalised before John Dembe scored twice in the second half.

CECAFA’s official 2024 tournament report confirms that the victory earned Uganda the bronze medal, while Dembe finished as the competition’s leading scorer.

That result gives the Hippos a positive historical reference, but the current squads and tournament circumstances are different. Uganda will have to earn another victory rather than rely on what happened two years ago.

Players to Watch

Richard Okello

The Uganda captain has provided leadership and an attacking threat throughout the competition. His early goal against Sudan in the semi-final demonstrated his ability to influence important matches.

Okello will be expected to drive Uganda forward and help the team respond positively after missing out on the final.

Elvis Opakrwoth

Opakrwoth has shown energy and determination during Uganda’s campaign. His movement can create problems for Burundi, particularly if the Hippos move the ball quickly through midfield.

Isima Mulala Magala

Magala’s work in midfield will be important in determining whether Uganda control possession. He must help protect the defence while providing a link to the attacking players.

Gilbert Ongenrwot

Uganda need defensive stability after conceding three goals in the semi-final. Ongenrwot’s positioning, aerial ability and communication could be central to containing Burundi’s leading scorer.

Amini Nshimirimana

Burundi’s captain entered the playoff with four tournament goals. He is a direct threat inside the penalty area and must not be given space to attack crosses or loose balls.

What Uganda Must Improve

Uganda’s first task is to regain the defensive discipline displayed during the group stage. The Hippos conceded only once in two group matches but allowed Sudan to score three times in the semi-final.

Managing transitions will be crucial. When Uganda commit players forward, the midfield must remain alert to Burundi’s counterattacks.

The Hippos also need to make better use of strong periods. Scoring first against Sudan did not give them control because their opponents were allowed to respond quickly.

Against Burundi, Uganda must remain composed after scoring or conceding. The match could be decided by which team handles the emotional disappointment of the semi-finals more effectively.

Uganda U20 vs Burundi Prediction

Both teams won their respective groups before suffering semi-final defeats. Burundi appear defensively organised, while Uganda have shown greater attacking variety across the tournament.

Nshimirimana’s scoring form gives Burundi a genuine threat, but Uganda’s midfield quality and experience from the previous bronze playoff could make the difference.

Prediction: Uganda U20 2-1 Burundi U20.

The prediction is an editorial assessment rather than an assured outcome. Youth football can be unpredictable, and team selection, fatigue, and early goals could alter the contest.

Conclusion

Uganda and Burundi may have missed the tournament’s two AFCON U20 qualification places, but the bronze playoff still carries meaning for both teams.

For the Hippos, victory would reward an encouraging group-stage campaign and demonstrate their ability to recover from semi-final disappointment. Burundi will see the match as another opportunity to confirm the progress shown in Dar es Salaam.

Pride, regional standing and a place on the CECAFA podium remain at stake. Uganda must combine its attacking quality with renewed defensive concentration to end the competition with a medal.
