Portugal begin their title defence

Portugal enter the new campaign as Nations League champions after defeating Spain 5-3 on penalties in the 2025 final. The match finished 2-2 after extra time, with Ronaldo scoring Portugal’s second goal before Rúben Neves converted the decisive penalty.

However, the hosts begin their title defence with a different head coach. Jesus replaced Roberto Martínez following Portugal’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign and now starts his tenure against Wales.

Portugal’s squad contains experience throughout the pitch. Diogo Costa, Rúben Dias, João Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo give the hosts a strong core, while João Neves and Pedro Neto provide energy around them.

The challenge for Jesus is to introduce his tactical ideas without disrupting the relationships already established within the side.

Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans

Ronaldo confirmed before the match that he intends to continue representing Portugal while he believes he can contribute. The captain enters the fixture with 979 senior career goals, 833 for his clubs and 146 for Portugal, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters.

Although the pursuit of 1,000 goals creates an additional storyline, Portugal cannot allow the milestone to distract from their collective task. Ronaldo’s movement inside the penalty area remains valuable, but service from Fernandes, Neto and the advancing full-backs will be essential.

Wales face injury concerns

Wales travel to Lisbon without Harry Wilson, Nathan Broadhead and Karl Darlow, who withdrew from the squad because of injuries. David Cornell, Joe Taylor and Charlie Savage were called up as replacements.

Joe Rodon, Dylan Lawlor, Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies were already unavailable when the original squad was announced. Those absences reduce the visitors’ options, particularly against a Portuguese team capable of controlling possession for long periods.

Wales may therefore adopt a compact defensive shape and look to attack quickly through Brennan Johnson, Daniel James and David Brooks. Ethan Ampadu’s positioning in midfield could be important in protecting the defence against Fernandes and Vitinha.

Players to watch

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s leading penalty-area threat. His anticipation, aerial ability and finishing could become decisive if the hosts pin Wales close to their own goal.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes can unlock a compact defence with passes between the lines, crosses and shots from outside the area. His connection with Ronaldo will be central to Portugal’s attacking plan.

Brennan Johnson

Johnson offers Wales speed and direct running on the counterattack. He could test Portugal whenever the hosts’ full-backs advance and leave space behind them.

Ethan Ampadu

Ampadu must provide defensive protection while helping Wales play through Portugal’s pressure. His discipline will be important against a technically strong midfield.

Tactical outlook

Portugal are expected to dominate possession and use Cancelo and Mendes to stretch the Welsh defensive block. Vitinha and João Neves can control the midfield, allowing Fernandes to operate closer to Ronaldo.

Wales are likely to defend narrowly, restrict central space and attack through quick transitions. Their best opportunities may come from set pieces or moments when Portugal lose possession with several players committed forward.

The longer Wales remain level, the greater their confidence should become. However, their injury absences and Portugal’s attacking depth make the hosts strong favourites.

What the match means for Ugandan fans

The 9:45 pm EAT kick-off offers Ugandan supporters a convenient opportunity to follow two recognisable European national teams. Ronaldo will attract considerable attention, while Premier League followers will also be familiar with Fernandes, Dias, Johnson and Ampadu.

The match also provides an early indication of how Portugal will operate under Jesus. For Ugandan football enthusiasts, the contrast between Portugal’s possession play and Wales’ counterattacking approach should provide an interesting tactical contest.

Portugal vs Wales prediction

Portugal possess greater squad depth, home advantage, and more attacking options. Wales can threaten on transitions, but their injury problems may make it difficult to withstand sustained pressure.

Prediction: Portugal 3-1 Wales

Final thoughts

Portugal should control possession and create the greater number of chances, but Wales have enough pace to punish defensive mistakes. The hosts’ quality and home advantage make them the stronger selection, although a new coaching era and Wales’ counterattacking threat leave room for uncertainty.
