NEC Looking to Build on Derby Victory
NEC began their campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over KCCA in the Lugogo derby. Richard Basangwa opened the scoring before Pius Obuya produced an excellent long-range finish to secure the points.
The result continued NEC’s improvement under Badru Kaddu. After enduring a difficult beginning to the previous campaign, the Diehards lost only once during the second half of the season following Kaddu’s appointment.
Their opening performance against KCCA demonstrated defensive organisation, midfield discipline and an ability to punish mistakes. Playing at their familiar Lugogo home should give NEC additional confidence, although Kaddu has warned his players against underestimating Lugazi.
The hosts have several injury concerns. According to NEC’s official match preview, Uganda Cranes forward Fahad Bayo remains unavailable because of a muscle strain. Ibrahim Musa is rehabilitating a knee injury involving a partial posterior cruciate ligament tear, while Kagawa Ssenoga will also miss the match.
Lugazi Target Another Important Victory
Lugazi opened their season by beating Kigezi HomeBoyz 2-1. Rwothomio scored the opening goal before Livingstone Mulondo delivered a dramatic winner in added time.
That result showed Lugazi’s determination and ability to remain competitive until the final whistle. However, facing NEC in Lugogo represents a significantly more demanding examination of Abbey Kikomeko’s squad.
Lugazi will again be without Abdul Kalanzi, one of their outstanding performers from the previous campaign. His absence removes creativity from the visitors’ attack, placing greater responsibility on Rwothomio and the supporting midfielders.
Kikomeko nevertheless believes his team’s productive pre-season preparations have provided a strong foundation. He has promised that Lugazi will approach the match with the same fighting mentality displayed against Kigezi HomeBoyz.

Rwothomio Adds an Emotional Subplot
Much of the attention will centre on Rwothomio. The experienced forward joined Lugazi after leaving NEC, where he spent three seasons and established himself as a reliable attacking option.
He scored 12 goals in 34 Uganda Premier League appearances for NEC and added two goals in four CAF Confederation Cup matches. His knowledge of NEC’s defenders and playing environment could help Lugazi, while the circumstances surrounding his departure provide extra motivation.
The striker has already demonstrated his value by scoring on his Lugazi league debut. NEC must prevent him from receiving service in dangerous central areas, particularly when the visitors attack quickly after recovering possession.
NEC vs Lugazi Head-to-Head Record
This will be the fifth league meeting between the clubs. NEC have dominated the previous four Uganda Premier League encounters, recording three victories, while Lugazi have won once.
Kawowo Sports reports that NEC have won four of five meetings when the broader head-to-head record is considered. That history gives the Diehards a psychological advantage, but Lugazi’s opening victory suggests they are capable of competing more strongly this season.
Key Battle: Basangwa vs Rwothomio
Basangwa and Rwothomio could determine the outcome at opposite ends. Basangwa enters the contest after scoring against KCCA and will test Lugazi’s central defenders with his movement.
Rwothomio offers experience, physical strength and familiarity with NEC’s defensive structure. The team that provides its striker with better service is likely to control the decisive moments.

Prediction and Verdict
NEC’s home advantage, strong head-to-head record and clean-sheet victory over KCCA make them slight favourites. Lugazi should remain competitive, particularly with Rwothomio motivated against his former club, but the visitors may struggle to create consistently without Kalanzi.
A closely fought and relatively low-scoring contest is expected, with NEC’s defensive structure potentially making the difference.
Prediction: NEC FC 1-0 Lugazi FC.
