Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur meet in an attractive Carabao Cup third-round tie at Anfield on Tuesday night, with both teams seeking an attacking improvement after goalless Premier League draws.

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool were held 0-0 by Fulham, while Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham recorded the same result against Everton. The knockout fixture therefore presents both managers with an immediate opportunity to restore momentum.

Liverpool are expected to rotate during a demanding run of four matches in approximately 10 days. Tottenham will also make changes, although injuries have reduced De Zerbi’s available options.

For supporters in Uganda, the match kicks off at 10:00 pm East Africa Time.

Liverpool Seek an Attacking Response

Liverpool enter the cup tie unbeaten this season but have struggled to reproduce their best attacking football consistently.

The Reds defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 before securing a 2-1 Champions League victory over Atletico madrid. However, their weekend draw with Fulham exposed a lack of creativity and cutting edge.

Iraola acknowledged that the congested schedule must influence his selection. Liverpool face their third match within a week, and the coach must balance immediate cup ambitions with the need to protect players from fatigue and injury.

There will be at least one confirmed change. Giorgi Mamardashvili will replace Alisson Becker in goal and make his first appearance of the 2026–27 campaign.

Liverpool have won the League Cup a record 10 times. They have also avoided elimination in their opening tie since Chelsea defeated them at Anfield in 2018.

Tottenham Searching for Their First Away Goal

Tottenham qualified for the third round by beating Charlton Athletic 5-1. Their Premier League form has been far less convincing.

Spurs have yet to score away from home this season, losing 3-0 at Brentford and drawing 0-0 at Nottingham Forest. Their home stalemate against Everton extended their concerning league scoring run.

De Zerbi nevertheless wants his team to approach the cup with the same commitment expected in league football. Mathys Tel, Lucas Bergvall and other players who have received limited minutes could be given opportunities.

Former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson could also make his first appearance against the Reds since moving to Tottenham. His knowledge of Anfield and Liverpool’s senior players may benefit the visitors.

Liverpool Team News

Mamardashvili is confirmed to start in goal. Joe Gomez is available after recovering from the muscle injury he sustained during pre-season, although Iraola must decide how many minutes the defender can safely play.

Conor Bradley, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain unavailable.

The schedule should encourage rotation. Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz are among the regular starters who could be rested or given reduced minutes.

Alexander Isak may retain his place because Liverpool’s attacking absences limit Iraola’s alternatives. The Sweden international has an excellent personal record against Spurs, scoring seven goals in six previous appearances.

Cody Gakpo is Liverpool’s leading League Cup scorer among the current squad with nine goals, but his availability requires assessment following a reported groin concern.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Mamardashvili; Gomez, Araújo, Jacquet, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Nyoni; Muñoz, Szoboszlai, Ngumoha; Isak.

Tottenham Team News

Tottenham will be without Sandro Tonali after the midfielder sustained a knock in the draw with Everton.

Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski are also unavailable. Richarlison will not be involved, while Mykhailo Mudryk, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons remain sidelined.

Destiny Udogie is available again after missing the Everton match. His return gives De Zerbi an alternative at left-back, although Robertson could start against his former club.

Mohammed Kudus is available, and De Zerbi could give opportunities to Tel and Bergvall. Dominic Solanke may lead the attack as he attempts to rediscover his scoring form.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Senesi, Robertson; Bentancur, Bergvall; Kudus, Gallagher, Sávio; Solanke.

Confirmed teams should be released approximately one hour before kick-off.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Head-to-Head

Liverpool have an outstanding home record against Tottenham. According to Liverpool’s official statistical preview, the Reds have lost only one of their last 30 home meetings with Spurs in all competitions.

Tottenham have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 16 visits to Anfield. Liverpool won 4-0 when the teams last met at the stadium in the League Cup, overturning a first-leg deficit in the 2024–25 semi-finals.

Their most recent meeting finished 1-1 at Anfield in March 2026. Liverpool had previously won 2-1 away to Tottenham in December 2025.

Players to Watch

Alexander Isak will be Liverpool’s main attacking threat if selected. His movement, pace and strong scoring history against Tottenham could prove decisive.

Dominik Szoboszlai offers energy, ball progression and a goal threat from midfield. His versatility is especially important when Iraola rotates other senior players.

For Tottenham, Dominic Solanke returns to a stadium he knows well. De Zerbi has backed the striker to recover his best form, but he needs better service and more touches in dangerous areas.

Mohammed Kudus can offer Spurs unpredictability through his dribbling and direct running. Liverpool must prevent him from attacking isolated defenders during counterattacks.

Match Prediction

Liverpool’s excellent Anfield record against Tottenham and their superior attacking options make a home victory the strongest prediction.

Iraola’s changes could reduce Liverpool’s fluency, particularly against a Tottenham team determined to end its scoring problems. Spurs still have enough quality to punish mistakes, but their injuries and poor away form leave the hosts with the clearer route to victory.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur.

Betting-Market Analysis

A Liverpool victory is the leading match-result selection. Liverpool to score first and Liverpool to score over 1.5 team goals are other analysis-based possibilities.

Under 4.5 total goals may suit the recent attacking struggles of both teams, while Tottenham under 1.5 team goals aligns with their failure to score in their two away league fixtures.

Isak to score at any time may attract interest if he starts, given his record of seven goals in six previous appearances against Tottenham.

These are analytical opinions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Rotation, confirmed line-ups, tactical changes, refereeing decisions and match incidents can affect every market.
