KCCA 1-0 Kataka: Anyama Ends Citizens’ Wait

Emmanuel Anyama scored as KCCA defeated Kataka 1-0 at Lugogo to secure their first win and goal of the 2026/27 UPL season.

Emmanuel Anyama scored the decisive goal as KCCA FC edged Kataka FC 1-0 at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, to register their first victory of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season.

Anyama converted Sammy Ssebaduka’s low delivery shortly before the hour mark, ending KCCA’s wait for both a league goal and a win this season.

The performance was not entirely convincing, but the result brought much-needed relief to head coach Brian Ssenyondo following a difficult opening run that had placed him and his players under increasing pressure.

The official KCCA match preview listed the fixture for Wednesday afternoon at Lugogo. KCCA entered it without a league victory after defeats to NEC and Express before a goalless draw against Kigezi Homeboyz.

Ssenyondo Makes Six Changes

Ssenyondo reacted to the poor opening run by making six changes to his starting team.

Hassan Muhamud, James Mubezi, Elvis Ngonde, Anyama, Ibrahim Kasule and Lazaro Muhindo were introduced into the starting line-up. Captain Herbert Achayi, Maxwell Owachigui, Saidi Mayanja, Charles Lwanga, Ashiraf Mugume and Ismael Fahad made way.

Kasule was handed his first start after returning from compassionate leave, while Anyama was trusted to provide greater attacking energy.

The changes underlined the urgency of KCCA’s situation. The Kasasiro Boys began the campaign as FUFA Super 8 champions, but their league performances had failed to match the expectations created by that pre-season success.

Kataka Waste Early Opportunities

Despite KCCA’s changes, Kataka created the better early opportunities.

Forward Ali Ssentamu twice found himself in promising positions during the first half but failed to hit the target. One opening followed a misplaced back-pass that presented the visitors with an opportunity to punish the hosts.

Those misses proved expensive.

KCCA gradually settled and started finding openings through Ssebaduka, Anyama and Kasule. The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when Kasule’s effort struck the crossbar in the 41st minute.

Kataka goalkeeper Solomon Okello also remained alert as KCCA searched for their first league goal of the campaign.

The teams entered the interval level, leaving the pressure firmly on Ssenyondo and his players.

Anyama Ends KCCA’s Goal Drought

KCCA returned for the second half with greater control in midfield as Kataka began to lose some of their first-half intensity.

The breakthrough arrived three minutes before the hour mark. Ssebaduka attacked down the right and delivered a low cross across the face of goal. Anyama made a well-timed run towards the near post and converted from close range.

Beyond putting KCCA ahead, the strike ended a damaging run of three league matches without a goal.

KCCA Survive Late Kataka Pressure

KCCA could not relax after taking the lead. Kataka pushed forward in search of an equaliser and created dangerous moments during the closing stages.

Ssentamu threatened again in the final five minutes, but Achayi made an important intervention to divert one effort away from goal.

Kataka continued applying pressure into stoppage time. José Denilson Da Silva then tested Humphrey Oyirwoth with a powerful long-range attempt, but the KCCA goalkeeper produced a vital save to preserve the clean sheet.

The final whistle brought visible relief to the hosts. Ssenyondo briefly acknowledged the opposing technical team before heading towards the dressing room after securing the result he urgently needed.

What the Victory Means for Ssenyondo

One narrow victory does not resolve all KCCA’s problems. The team still lacked fluency for long periods, and Kataka will feel they should have scored from the opportunities created.

However, the three points provide Ssenyondo with breathing space and give his players a platform from which to rebuild their season.

KCCA have now recorded consecutive clean sheets after drawing 0-0 with Kigezi Homeboyz and beating Kataka. Their immediate challenge is to add greater attacking consistency to that defensive improvement.

Anyama’s movement offered encouragement, while Ssebaduka’s delivery demonstrated the value KCCA can obtain from attacking the wide areas. Oyirwoth’s late save was equally important in ensuring the earlier work was not wasted.

Difficult Lesson for Kataka

Kataka left Lugogo without a point despite producing several promising moments.

The newly promoted side competed well, defended with discipline and repeatedly threatened KCCA. Their failure to convert clear chances, particularly during the first half, ultimately separated the teams.

Kataka’s top-flight campaign remains challenging, but their performance showed they can trouble established Uganda Premier League opponents. Improving their finishing will be essential if competitive displays are to produce points.

Conclusion

KCCA needed a result more than an impressive performance, and Anyama’s second-half goal delivered it.

Kataka will regret their missed opportunities, but Ssenyondo can finally build on a victory after a difficult start. The result lifts the immediate pressure around Lugogo, although KCCA must produce more consistent performances when league action resumes and they visit URA.
