Ipswich 2-4 Arsenal: Max Dowman Inspires Carabao Cup Win

Max Dowman scored twice and assisted Mikel Merino as Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Max Dowman delivered a spectacular two-goal performance as Arsenal defeated Ipswich Town 4-2 at Portman Road to advance to the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The 16-year-old scored in the seventh and 47th minutes before assisting Mikel Merino for Arsenal’s fourth. Noni Madueke also found the net as Mikel Arteta’s heavily rotated team established a commanding advantage.

Anis Mehmeti and former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom reduced the deficit for Ipswich, but their goals arrived after the visitors had already taken control.

Dowman Announces Himself Within Seven Minutes

Dowman required only seven minutes to justify his selection. After combining with Eberechi Eze, the academy graduate drove through midfield, beat Cedric Kipre with a confident change of direction and placed a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Arsenal doubled their advantage nine minutes later. Bruno Guimaraes recovered possession before Merino helped direct the ball towards Madueke, whose clinical volley left Christian Walton unable to respond.

Ipswich improved after falling two goals behind, but Gabriel provided calm leadership alongside Arsenal’s younger defenders. The visitors entered halftime with a deserved 2-0 advantage despite Viktor Gyokeres struggling to become involved.

Second Dowman Goal Ends Ipswich Hopes

Any prospect of an Ipswich comeback was effectively removed two minutes after halftime. Dowman controlled Martin Zubimendi’s pass, adjusted quickly to a deflection and calmly scored his second goal.

Merino made it 4-0 in the 58th minute. Dowman supplied the pass, and the stand-in captain guided a measured left-footed finish in off the post from the edge of the penalty area.

Dowman, aged 16 years and 258 days, became the second-youngest player to score for a Premier League club in the League Cup. Only former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas achieved the feat at a younger age.

He also became only the second 16-year-old to score twice in one match for a Premier League team, following Wayne Rooney’s brace for Everton against Wrexham in 2002.

Ipswich Earn Late Consolations

Ipswich refused to collapse after falling four goals behind. Jack Clarke made an immediate impact from the bench, driving down the left and cutting the ball back for Mehmeti to score in the 62nd minute.

Arsenal controlled most of the remaining period, although the hosts continued searching for openings. Akpom, who began his career with Arsenal, added a second Ipswich goal during stoppage time when his turning shot took a deflection beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The response gave the home supporters encouragement, but Gary O’Neil’s side had been punished too severely for their earlier mistakes.

Arteta Balances Praise with Patience

Arteta praised Dowman’s individual actions and influence while emphasising the need to manage the teenager carefully. That approach is understandable given Dowman’s age, growing reputation and the increasing demand for first-team opportunities.

The manager could also celebrate valuable minutes for fringe players and youngsters. Arsenal fielded several teenagers, while players requiring action were tested in a demanding away environment.

Gyokeres remained peripheral for long periods, while Ipswich found space around Arsenal’s reshaped defence after the interval. Those weaknesses provide useful coaching points before tougher assignments.

Verdict

The final score reflected Arsenal’s attacking superiority more than an overwhelming statistical advantage. Arteta’s team converted its strongest opportunities and punished Ipswich whenever the hosts lost control in dangerous areas.

Dowman was unquestionably the defining figure. Two composed goals, an assist and a fearless all-round performance demonstrated why he is regarded as one of England’s most exciting young talents.

Ipswich deserve credit for responding through Mehmeti and Akpom, but their recovery began too late. Arsenal advance with their momentum intact, greater confidence in their squad depth, and another compelling reminder that Dowman is ready to contribute at senior level.
