Chelsea searching for greater defensive balance
Chelsea have scored 10 goals in four Premier League matches but conceded nine, making their fixtures the division’s highest-scoring overall.
The Blues began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham before beating Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge. Their perfect start ended with a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, despite Morgan Rogers scoring first. Chelsea then surrendered another early advantage in a 2-2 home draw against Hull City.
Those results leave Alonso’s team with two wins, one draw and one defeat. They have scored in every match but also conceded at least twice in each one, their first such start since 2015/16. Alonso says Chelsea must balance their attacking ambition with greater collective defensive responsibility.
João Pedro leads the league with six goal involvements, while Rogers has scored or assisted in every league game. Cole Palmer needs one more goal to reach 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea.
Brentford remain difficult to beat at home
Brentford have lost only two of 17 Premier League home matches and are unbeaten in seven home league fixtures and seven home London derbies.
The Bees have surrendered leads in three matches. Kevin Schade scored twice in their latest game, a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
According to Brentford’s official preview, the Bees average 17 shots and have attempted a league-high 30 shots from set plays. Chelsea lead the division with six shots on target per game.
Team news
Injured Brentford players Josh Dasilva, Antoni Milambo, Nathan Collins, Sepp van den Berg and Kaye Furo are out. Mathias Jensen is also unavailable. Neither side has a suspension.
Chelsea await late assessments on João Pedro, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo. Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson could be considered.

Key players to watch
Kevin Schade
Schade’s pace could expose Chelsea’s defence. He has three league goals and a Brentford-leading 29 duels won.
Cole Palmer
Palmer provides creativity between the lines and danger from set pieces.
João Pedro
If fit, João Pedro offers movement, creativity and finishing.
Caoimhín Kelleher
Kelleher made a league-high eight saves last weekend and could be busy again.
What the match means for Ugandan supporters
Chelsea’s large Ugandan following makes this derby a major attraction. The 10 pm EAT kick-off is convenient for many viewers.
Supporters should not assume an easy Chelsea victory. Brentford’s home record, direct running and set-piece strength could expose the visitors’ defensive uncertainty.
There is also a tactical lesson for Ugandan coaches and players. Brentford average 46 per cent possession and Chelsea 44 per cent, yet both create chances consistently. Rapid transitions and coordinated movement can compensate for having less of the ball.
Prediction
Chelsea possess greater individual quality, but their defensive record makes an away victory difficult to predict. Brentford are resilient at home, although surrendering leads in three successive league matches remains a concern.
The previous four Premier League meetings at the Gtech Community Stadium ended level. Both teams have also created chances consistently this season, making goals at both ends a reasonable possibility.

Verdict
Brentford vs Chelsea brings together attacking teams separated by one point. Chelsea must defend transitions and set pieces better, while Brentford must maintain concentration after taking the lead.
Chelsea may create the clearer chances, but Brentford’s home form suggests the visitors will work hard for every point.
