Arsenal Fan Dies During Match in Luuka

Arsenal supporter Moses Mpoya died after collapsing while watching Arsenal face Aston Villa in Luuka, with police awaiting autopsy findings.

An Arsenal supporter has died after collapsing while watching his team defeat Aston Villa in an English Premier League match in Luuka District.

The deceased, identified as Moses Mpoya, was watching the game with other football supporters at a video hall in Nawansega Trading Centre when he developed a sudden health complication during the first half.

He was rushed for emergency medical attention but was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet established the cause of his collapse and death.

Moses Mpoya Collapses During First Half

According to a Daily Monitor report, Mpoya developed complications before collapsing around the end of the first half of Arsenal’s second Premier League match of the 2026/27 season.

A separate Uganda Radio Network report published by The Independent said he fell from his seat during first-half stoppage time.

Mpoya, a resident of Bulamya Village in Bukooma Sub-county, had joined other football supporters to watch Arsenal’s away match against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Initial reports offered different accounts of where he was pronounced dead. Daily Monitor reported that he was rushed to Nawansega Health Centre III and pronounced dead on arrival.

The URN report said he received first aid at Nawansega Health Centre III before being referred to Kiyunga Health Centre IV, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police Await Autopsy Findings

Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said an autopsy would be conducted to establish Mpoya’s cause of death.

No police or medical authority had publicly confirmed the cause by the time the incident was reported. The circumstances immediately preceding his collapse were largely based on accounts provided by witnesses who were inside the video hall.

It would therefore be inaccurate to conclude that football, emotional pressure or gambling directly caused Mpoya’s death before the findings of the autopsy are released.

Police are expected to provide further information after completing the necessary medical and investigative procedures.

Alleged Bet Has Not Been Confirmed

Some witnesses alleged that Mpoya had placed a bet connected to Arsenal’s performance during the first half.

Daily Monitor reported that he may have predicted Arsenal would score at least three goals before halftime. The URN account instead said witnesses believed he had predicted a 3-0 Arsenal victory.

The differing claims have not been independently verified. There is also no official confirmation that Mpoya placed the alleged bet or that its outcome was medically connected to his collapse.

Witnesses said some spectators teased him when Arsenal failed to score during the opening 45 minutes. He reportedly collapsed as the first half entered added time.

The alleged bet must consequently be treated as an unconfirmed witness claim rather than the established cause of the tragedy.

Arsenal Beat Aston Villa Through Bukayo Saka

Arsenal eventually defeated Aston-villa-0-1, although the winning goal came after Mpoya had been taken for medical attention.

Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute, converting from close range to reward Arsenal for their patient performance.

Aston Villa’s best opportunity of the first half came through Emi Buendia, whose effort struck the crossbar. The hosts remained competitive, but they could not find an equaliser after falling behind.

The victory gave Arsenal two wins from their opening two Premier League matches and moved them to six points. In Luuka, however, the result was overshadowed by Mpoya’s death.

Mpoya Remembered as a Passionate Arsenal Supporter

Friends described Mpoya as a passionate Arsenal fan who regularly discussed the club’s performances and brought energy to match viewing gatherings in the community.

Fellow supporters said he was known for defending Arsenal during debates with rival fans and openly sharing his match predictions before games.

Outside football, Mpoya reportedly worked as a sawman and participated in several community development activities.

According to fellow Arsenal supporter Charles Lubaale, Mpoya helped organise a self-help group comprising 282 registered Arsenal fans.

The group holds monthly development meetings, assists members during sickness and bereavement, and provides soft loans to those seeking to establish small businesses.

Supporters associated with the initiative reportedly operate about 80 businesses around the trading centre. These include retail shops, snack stalls, barber shops, eateries and boda boda services.

The group had been preparing to establish a formal association and extend its activities to other parts of Bukooma Subcounty.

Members now intend to strengthen their development projects in Mpoya’s memory. His contribution, they said, went beyond football because he used his passion for Arsenal to bring people together and support local livelihoods.

Responsible Gambling Reminder for Ugandan Supporters

This incident is a reminder that football and betting should never be treated as matters of life, guaranteed income, or personal worth. Match outcomes remain uncertain, regardless of a team’s form or a supporter’s confidence.

Betting in Uganda is restricted to adults aged 25 and above. Gambling involves financial risk and should be treated only as entertainment, not as a source of income. Players should set firm spending and time limits, avoid using essential funds, never chase losses, and stop if gambling begins to cause stress, obsession, or financial difficulty.

Verdict

Mpoya’s death has left his family, friends and the wider Arsenal supporters’ community in Luuka mourning one of their most passionate members.

Although witnesses linked his collapse to events surrounding the match and an alleged bet, those claims remain unverified. The responsible conclusion is to await the autopsy and any subsequent statement from police or medical authorities.

Until then, emotional pressure, football, or gambling should not be presented as the confirmed cause of his death.

Mpoya will be remembered not only as a committed Arsenal supporter but also as a community organiser who used football to unite people and promote economic cooperation in his area.
