Manchester United 4-0 Sabah: Champions League Report

Manchester United beat Sabah 4-0 on their Champions League return as Cunha, Fernandes, Sesko and Martinez scored at Old Trafford.

Manchester United celebrated their return to the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over tournament newcomers Sabah at Old Trafford.

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring before Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko struck late in the first half. Lisandro Martinez completed the rout after the interval as Michael Carrick’s side made a perfect start to the league phase.

Sabah initially showed ambition and created opportunities, but their failure to convert was punished by United’s superior finishing. The visitors attempted 11 shots but failed to register one on target.

The emphatic win gave United three points, a clean sheet and a valuable early goal-difference advantage in the league-phase standings.

Sabah’s Bright Start Goes Unrewarded

Sabah did not begin like a team intimidated by the occasion. The Azerbaijani representatives attempted to pass out of defence and attack United whenever opportunities appeared.

However, their adventurous approach left spaces for Carrick’s players to exploit. United gradually increased the pressure and took control through the movement of Cunha, Fernandes and Youri Tielemans.

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute. Patrick Dorgu advanced down the left and delivered a low cross towards the near post, where Cunha converted to give United the lead.

Sabah should have equalised nine minutes later. Joy-Lance Mickels found space inside the six-yard area but directed his header wide. It proved a costly miss.

Fernandes and Sesko Put United in Control

United doubled their advantage in the 42nd minute following an intelligent combination between Tielemans and Fernandes.

Tielemans found the United captain, who produced a composed finish to make it 2-0. Fernandes once again influenced a major European match through his movement, technical quality and ability to arrive in scoring positions.

Sabah barely had time to recover before Sesko added a third in the 45th minute. Bryan Mbeumo released the Slovenian striker behind the defence, allowing him to round the goalkeeper and finish.

The goal rewarded Sesko on his first start of the season after he had scored as a substitute against Everton. His speed, strength and willingness to run behind Sabah’s centre-backs provided United with a direct attacking threat.

With three goals scored in 18 minutes, the match was effectively decided before half-time.

Martinez Completes the Victory

Carrick made changes during the second half with the three points almost secured, but United continued searching for another goal.

Joshua Zirkzee made a strong impact after coming off the bench. His clever backheel created an opening for Martinez in the 68th minute, and the Argentine defender finished from close range.

It was a special moment for Martinez, who celebrated at the Stretford End after completing United’s biggest Champions League victory since their return to the competition.

Carrick Praises Complete Performance

Carrick described the display as encouraging after United combined goals, attractive football and a clean sheet.

The manager was particularly pleased with the contribution of his substitutes and Sesko’s return to the starting team. He highlighted the striker’s physicality, pace and ability to attack space behind defenders.

Those qualities could give Carrick a difficult selection decision ahead of the Manchester derby. Cunha scored, Sesko impressed and Zirkzee created the fourth goal, while Marcus Rashford remains another attacking option.

What Comes Next?

United face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday before visiting Atletico Madrid in their next Champions League fixture.

Sabah must recover from a difficult first appearance in the competition proper. Valdas Dambrauskas’ team showed courage in possession but defended too deep, allowing United’s attackers space to receive, turn and accelerate towards goal.

Betting Review for Ugandan Supporters

Several major pre-match selections were successful: Manchester United to win, United to win by two or more goals, over 2.5 total goals and both teams to score—No.

That does not make similar outcomes certain in future matches. Every fixture is independent, and Manchester City or Atletico Madrid will present considerably stronger opposition.

Conclusion

Manchester United could hardly have requested a better Champions League return. Four different scorers, a clean sheet and an authoritative attacking performance gave Carrick’s team an ideal opening result.

Sabah offered occasional resistance, but United’s quality and clinical finishing proved decisive. Tougher assignments await, yet this performance provided confidence and demonstrated the attacking options available to Carrick.
