KCCA Held by Kigezi as Pressure Grows

KCCA remain winless and without a goal after Kigezi HomeBoyz held Brian Ssenyondo’s side to a goalless draw in Kamwenge.

KCCA FC’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season continued after the Kasasiro Boys were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Kigezi HomeBoyz at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge.

Neither team could find the decisive finish. KCCA collected their first point of the campaign, although they remain without a victory or goal after three league matches.

The result increased pressure on head coach Brian Ssenyondo, whose team had suffered consecutive 2-0 defeats against NEC FC and EXPRESS FC. KCCA now sit 15th in the 18-team standings with one point, while Kigezi HomeBoyz occupy 13th place.

According to Kawowo Sports, the draw extended KCCA’s winless beginning and confirmed their failure to score in three games.

Early Penalty Appeal Rejected

Kigezi started confidently and appealed for a penalty in the third minute after Filbert Obenchan brought down Dominic Abonga in a dangerous area. The referee rejected the appeal, allowing KCCA to survive a difficult opening.

KCCA produced their first meaningful attempt ten minutes later. Charles Lwanga connected with Saidi Mayanja’s corner, but his header went straight to goalkeeper Norman Angufindru.

Lwanga remained one of the visitors’ main attacking threats. He beat his marker inside the penalty area in the 31st minute but sent his subsequent attempt over the crossbar.

Kigezi almost punished that miss six minutes before halftime. Marvin Ainamaani delivered an inviting cross towards Abonga, whose header drifted wide. The chance demonstrated that the hosts were prepared to attack rather than spend the contest simply defending.

KCCA Denied by Offside Decision

KCCA emerged with renewed urgency after the interval. Etienne Katenga tested Angufindru five minutes into the second half, but the goalkeeper produced an important save.

The visitors appeared to have broken the deadlock in the 61st minute when Mayanja put the ball into the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside. It represented KCCA’s closest opportunity to register their first league goal of the season.

Kigezi then nearly claimed all three points in the 72nd minute. Darius Arinaitwe’s effort appeared destined for the target until KCCA goalkeeper Humphrey Oyirwoth produced an excellent save to tip it away.

Both teams searched for a late winner, but Kigezi’s organised defence withstood KCCA’s final pressure. The hosts consequently secured a valuable point against the 13-time Uganda Premier League champions.

KCCA’s Finishing Problems Continue

The draw represented a defensive improvement for KCCA after they conceded four goals in their opening two matches. However, another failure to score exposed the team’s most urgent problem.

Three matches without a goal provide little encouragement, regardless of promising build-up play or possession. Ssenyondo acknowledged the weakness after the match, admitting: “We are not yet clinical.”

The coach said his players had created several opportunities but lacked the finishing quality needed to convert them. He nevertheless defended their overall performance, highlighting their effort and improved football.

Kigezi HomeBoyz Earn Their Point

Kigezi deserve considerable credit for competing bravely against one of Uganda’s most successful clubs. They defended with discipline, received a dependable performance from Angufindru and created enough chances to threaten KCCA.

Abonga’s movement caused early problems, while Arinaitwe forced the most difficult save of the match from Oyirwoth. Kigezi remained compact without completely sacrificing their attacking ambition.

Pressure Mounts on Brian Ssenyondo

One point from three matches is a worrying return for a club with KCCA’s history and expectations. Their slow start has already left them playing catch-up, even though the campaign remains in its early stages.

Ssenyondo’s tactical structure appeared more stable in Kamwenge, and the clean sheet provides a foundation on which to build. Supporters will nevertheless expect clear attacking progress when KCCA return home.

The coach said victory in the next fixture is necessary to begin turning the season around. The meeting with Kataka FC will therefore represent an important early test of his ability to reverse KCCA’s decline.

What Comes Next?

Kigezi HomeBoyz visit SC Villa on Tuesday, September 15, presenting another opportunity for the newcomers to test themselves against an established side.

KCCA hosts Kataka the following day. Anything short of their first victory could intensify scrutiny of Ssenyondo and his players. Kataka must not be underestimated after Kigezi demonstrated how defensive discipline can frustrate more decorated opponents.

Conclusion

KCCA’s clean sheet ended their run of defeats but did little to resolve concerns about their attack. Ssenyondo’s team created openings and had a goal disallowed, yet a third consecutive match without scoring leaves them near the bottom.

Kigezi earned their point through determined defending, reliable goalkeeping and a willingness to attack when opportunities appeared. The pressure is now firmly on KCCA to defeat Kataka and begin repairing a disappointing start to the season.
