Ntugasaze 1-3 Maroons: Nunda Inspires Victory

Jackson Nunda scored twice as ten-man Maroons FC defeated Uganda Premier League newcomers Ntugasaze 3-1 at Kira Road Police Arena on Wednesday.

Marvin Oshaba converted a second-half penalty for the Prison Warders before Ronald Kaye scored Ntugasaze’s consolation goal. Maroons captain Edward Kabona was later sent off, forcing the visitors to protect their lead with ten players for the final half-hour.

The victory gave Maroons their first points of the 2026/27 campaign following a 2-1 opening-day defeat to URA. Ntugasaze, meanwhile, suffered their second successive loss after beginning the season with a 1-0 defeat away to Blacks Power.

Nunda Gives Maroons Early Control

Ntugasaze entered the contest hoping to mark their first top-flight home fixture with a positive result. Maroons, however, imposed themselves early and found a breakthrough in the 18th minute.

Nunda showed awareness and technique to redirect a corner into the net with a clever flick. The goal rewarded Maroons for their encouraging start while placing the promoted hosts under immediate pressure.

The former KCCA and URA midfielder continued to trouble Ntugasaze while operating as one of two attacking midfielders alongside Abel Michael Eturude.

Nunda’s positioning allowed him to find spaces between the hosts’ midfield and defence. When Maroons delivered the ball into dangerous areas, he consistently moved into positions from which he could either shoot or create an opportunity.

His second goal arrived late in the first half. Kabona delivered the ball into the penalty area, and Nunda directed a header beyond goalkeeper Richard Afoyo to double the visitors’ advantage.

Maroons entered halftime leading 2-0 and in complete control of the scoreline.

Oshaba Converts From the Spot

Any Ntugasaze’s hopes of launching an immediate second-half comeback suffered a major blow three minutes after the restart.

Nunda was brought down inside the penalty area by Apollo Kagogwe, giving Maroons an opportunity to extend their lead from 12 yards.

Oshaba remained composed and converted the resulting penalty to make it 3-0. Although Nunda did not complete a hat-trick, winning the spot kick ensured he was directly involved in all three Maroons goals.

Ntugasaze responded five minutes later through Kaye. The attacker reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute and gave the newcomers renewed belief that they could make the closing stages competitive.

Kaye later forced substitute goalkeeper Emmanuel Derrick Were into an important save as the hosts attempted to score again.

Kabona Red Card Changes the Contest

Maroons’ task became more difficult when Kabona was dismissed for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity as the last defender.

Losing their captain and an important defensive organiser left Maroons with ten players for approximately the final half-hour. It also forced coach Abdallah Loi Umar to alter his tactical plan.

The visitors reduced the spaces between their defensive and midfield lines, protected the central areas and allowed Ntugasaze more possession away from goal.

Ntugasaze increased their attacking pressure but could not turn the numerical advantage into another goal. Maroons remained compact, defended crosses and protected their two-goal lead until the final whistle.

The Kawowo Sports match report confirms the goalscorers, line-ups and Kabona’s dismissal, while ChimpReports provides further details about Nunda’s decisive contribution.

Jackson Nunda Delivers Complete Performance

Nunda was unquestionably the outstanding player.

His first goal demonstrated creativity and quick thinking, while his second showed his ability to attack deliveries inside the penalty area. He then made the run that resulted in Maroons’ penalty.

The midfielder’s movement gave Ntugasaze a problem they struggled to solve. Their defenders could not always decide whether to follow him into deeper positions or remain within their defensive line.

Oshaba also produced an influential display. Beyond converting the penalty, he helped Maroons compete in midfield and maintain control before the red card changed the balance of the game.

For Ntugasaze, Kaye provided the strongest attacking response. His goal prevented a home shutout, and his later effort forced Were into a save. He will be important as Pius Ngabo’s side searches for its first Premier League points.

Tactical Lessons for Ntugasaze

Ntugasaze competed more effectively during the second half, but their first-half defensive problems left them with too much work to do.

Conceding twice from deliveries into the penalty area showed the need for clearer marking and stronger communication. Nunda was allowed to make decisive movements for both goals.

The hosts also failed to take full advantage of Kabona’s dismissal. When playing against ten men, attacks must be stretched across the width of the pitch to create gaps. Faster passing and more purposeful movement could have placed greater pressure on Maroons’ compact defence.

Despite the result, Kaye’s goal and the chances created after halftime provide encouraging signs. The newcomers must now turn competitive passages into complete performances.

What the Result Means

Maroons responded strongly after their opening defeat and demonstrated both attacking quality and defensive resilience.

Scoring three goals established the winning position, but protecting it with ten players was equally important. Umar will nevertheless be concerned about the red card and the disciplinary consequences of losing his captain.

Ntugasaze have now conceded four goals and scored once across their opening two fixtures. Their adjustment to top-flight football is continuing, but points will become increasingly important as the season develops.

Conclusion

Maroons’ 3-1 victory was built on Nunda’s intelligence, Oshaba’s composure and the team’s resilience after Kabona’s dismissal.

Ntugasaze showed determination after falling three goals behind but paid heavily for their first-half defensive mistakes. Their next challenge is to reproduce their second-half urgency from the opening whistle.
