Manchester United 2-3 Brighton: Historic Cup Collapse

Manchester United surrendered a two-goal lead as Brighton won 3-2 at Old Trafford, eliminating Michael Carrick’s side from the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United suffered a historic Carabao Cup exit after surrendering a two-goal advantage in a dramatic 3-2 defeat by Brighton at Old Trafford.

Shea Lacey marked his first senior start with an eighth-minute goal before Mason Mount doubled United’s advantage less than two minutes later.

However, Charalampos Kostoulas reduced Brighton’s deficit in first-half stoppage time. Pascal Gross equalised in the 65th minute before substitute Maxim De Cuyper completed the comeback four minutes later.

The result eliminated Michael Carrick’s team in the third round and brought angry boos from the Old Trafford crowd.

Lacey Inspires Electric United Start

United appeared ready to respond positively to their Manchester derby defeat when Lacey produced an excellent opening goal.

The 19-year-old received Youri Tielemans’ pass, moved beyond two Brighton defenders and beat goalkeeper Jason Steele at his near post. Benjamin Šeško’s hold-up play was also important during the build-up.

Only 43 seconds after the restart, United struck again. Marcus Rashford accelerated into the penalty area and forced a save from Steele, but Mount reacted quickly to convert the rebound.

At 2-0 inside 10 minutes, United were in complete control. Brighton initially struggled with the hosts’ movement, while Lacey’s direct running repeatedly unsettled their defence.

Kostoulas Starts Brighton Comeback

Brighton gradually settled and should have reduced the deficit when Malick Yalcouyé broke clear in the 36th minute. The winger, however, directed his effort wide.

The visitors eventually scored in the first minute of stoppage time. Jaouen Hadjam’s diagonal pass exposed the United defence, allowing Kostoulas to escape Ayden Heaven and finish through Karl Darlow’s legs.

That goal changed the atmosphere and gave Brighton belief before the interval. United, who had started with speed and confidence, became increasingly passive.

According to the Sky Sports match report, the hosts did not record another shot on target after Mount’s goal until the 76th minute.

Gross and De Cuyper Complete Turnaround

Brighton’s pressure produced an equaliser in the 65th minute. United failed to clear the ball decisively, and Luka Vušković directed it towards Gross, who created space before finishing from close range.

Fabian Hürzeler then introduced De Cuyper and Diego Gómez. The changes delivered an almost immediate reward.

Gómez carried the ball forward before Brighton attacked down the right. The delivery into the area reached De Cuyper, who converted just three minutes after entering the contest.

United introduced Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Kobbie Mainoo while searching for an equaliser.

Rashford received the clearest opportunity in the 76th minute, but Steele saved his near-post attempt. Brighton nearly added a fourth when Leny Yoro cleared Kostoulas’ effort off the line before Darlow denied Gómez.

Historic Defeat Increases Pressure on Carrick

This was the first time in 50 years that Manchester United lost at Old Trafford after establishing a 2-0 lead. The previous occasion was a 3-2 defeat by Tottenham in September 1976.

United had won 143 of the previous 145 home matches in which they went two goals ahead. They have also now exited the Carabao Cup at their first hurdle in two consecutive seasons.

Carrick accepted responsibility for the collapse, telling Sky Sports: “We can’t accept that as a group.”

The head coach must quickly restore confidence because the result removes one of United’s realistic opportunities to win silverware. Defensive concentration, control in midfield and the ability to manage a favourable match position remain serious concerns.

Lacey’s performance was the major positive. The academy graduate played with bravery and composure, but his memorable first-start goal was overshadowed by the team’s collapse.

What the Result Means for Ugandan Manchester United Fans

For Manchester United supporters in Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara and across Uganda, this was another painful late-night result.

The 10 pm EAT kick-off began with excitement as Lacey and Mount established a commanding advantage. By midnight, however, Ugandan fans had watched United surrender control and exit another competition.

The defeat means supporters will have fewer domestic cup fixtures to follow this season. Attention now shifts towards the Premier League and European competition, with every performance placing Carrick and his players under greater scrutiny.

Ugandan fans can take encouragement from Lacey’s emergence, but Brighton’s comeback demonstrated that individual talent cannot compensate for poor game management and defensive instability.

Conclusion

Manchester United appeared in complete control after Lacey and Mount scored inside the opening 10 minutes, but Kostoulas’ goal before half-time transformed the contest.

Gross and De Cuyper then punished United’s failure to maintain their intensity, completing a deserved Brighton comeback. Lacey provided hope for the future, but a historic surrender and another early cup exit leave Carrick facing difficult questions.
