Man United 0-1 Man City: Haaland Wins Derby

Erling Haaland scored as 10-man Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a VAR-dominated Premier League derby.

Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal as 10-man Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a dramatic Premier League derby at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

Phil Foden was dismissed midway through the first half, leaving City to play more than an hour with a numerical disadvantage. United failed to exploit it, and Haaland punished them by converting Joško Gvardiol’s delivery in the 60th minute.

The goal survived a lengthy VAR review, but the decision became the match’s major controversy because Enzo Fernández was standing in an offside position during the move. City nevertheless defended with discipline to preserve their perfect league start under Enzo Maresca.

Foden Sent Off After Fernandes Clash

City’s first major opportunity developed when Semenyo took possession away from Dalot but could not find Haaland for a simple finish.

The match changed in the 23rd minute. Foden reacted after a challenge involving Fernandes and caught the United captain around the stomach with his feet. Referee Michael Oliver showed a straight red card, and VAR upheld the violent-conduct decision.

City reorganised into a compact 4-4-1 formation. Maresca’s players surrendered some possession but protected central areas effectively, denying United the space needed for quick attacks behind the defence.

It was a disciplined tactical response to a setback at Old Trafford.

Rashford came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time. His curling free-kick from around 30 yards beat Donnarumma but struck the post. City reached the interval without conceding despite their numerical disadvantage.

Haaland Breaks the Deadlock

United began the second half with more purpose. Mainoo struck the woodwork from open play, increasing the expectation that the hosts would eventually convert their extra player into a goal.

Instead, City responded clinically on the hour. Gvardiol’s cross took a deflection and reached Haaland, who directed a controlled finish beyond Lammens.

The assistant initially flagged for offside, prompting an extended VAR check. Haaland was found to be onside, but attention shifted to Fernández, who was beyond the final defender and close to Martínez as the ball travelled through the area.

VAR ruled that Fernández had not touched the ball or interfered sufficiently with the defender, allowing the goal to stand. United strongly disputed that interpretation.

United increased the pressure during the closing stages, but their final passes and finishing lacked conviction. Donnarumma made an important late save from Mbeumo to ensure City left Old Trafford with three points.

Controversial Winner Dominates Discussion

The decision to award Haaland’s goal overshadowed much of the post-match discussion. United argued that Fernández’s positioning affected Martínez’s attempt to defend Gvardiol’s cross, even though the midfielder did not make contact with the ball.

Reports later said the elite refereeing body acknowledged that VAR should have advised an on-field review because Fernández’s position may have influenced Martínez. The controversy added to United’s frustration, although their inability to dominate 10 opponents remained a separate concern.

Maresca Praises City’s Character

Maresca praised his players for adjusting after Foden’s dismissal without abandoning their attacking intent. City remained prepared to counter through Haaland, Semenyo and second-half substitute Iliman Ndiaye instead of protecting the draw from deep immediately.

Haaland described the victory as evidence of City’s personality and character. The Norwegian’s ninth goal in 11 Manchester derby appearances moved him level with Sergio Agüero on nine derby goals for City.

The victory maintained City’s maximum return of 12 points from four league games. They remained level with Arsenal at the top and recorded their 64th win in 199 Manchester derbies.

What Went Wrong for Manchester United?

United had the numerical and territorial advantages but struggled to move City’s defensive block. Their attacks became predictable, with too few combinations inside the penalty area and limited success from wide deliveries.

Manager Michael Carrick could reasonably question the VAR decision, yet United must also examine their attacking execution. Losing a home derby after receiving such an early advantage will increase scrutiny of the team’s confidence, creativity and decision-making.

Uganda Supporters and Bangbet Interest

Manchester United and Manchester City attract passionate support across Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara and Uganda. The derby offered local fans a powerful example of football’s uncertainty: a red card and numerical advantage did not produce the widely expected result.

Conclusion

City’s derby victory combined Haaland’s finishing with collective resilience after Foden’s dismissal. United will remain angered by the disputed goal, but their failure to dismantle 10 men was equally damaging. Maresca’s side departed with the points, local bragging rights and further evidence that they can win through character as well as control.
