Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday. Read the derby preview, team news, H2H, players, and prediction for the match.

Manchester United welcome Premier League leaders Manchester City to Old Trafford on Sunday for the first Manchester derby of the 2026/27 season.

City have won all three league matches under Enzo Maresca and enter Matchweek Four at the top of the table. United have collected four points following one victory, one draw and one defeat.

Michael Carrick’s team will nevertheless take confidence from Thursday’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah and their 2-0 win against City in the most recent derby.

For the large United and City supporter communities across Uganda, Sunday’s early-evening kickoff promises contrasting emotions, intense debate and potentially another unpredictable derby.

United Seek League Consistency

United’s Premier League campaign started with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Hull City. They responded by beating Ipswich Town 5-2 before surrendering two leads in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Everton.

Their European performance against Sabah was considerably more controlled. Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez scored as United combined attacking quality with a clean sheet.

The challenge is reproducing that authority against stronger opposition. City possess the movement and finishing required to punish any defensive mistakes.

United have conceded at least twice in each of their first three league matches. Carrick must therefore find a better balance between attacking ambition and defensive protection.

City Face First Major League Test

City have collected maximum points without consistently reaching their highest level. Their opening victories include a 4-1 success against Crystal Palace and a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry City.

Haaland scored the decisive goal against Coventry, taking him to 300 senior career goals. The Norwegian also struck twice against Palace and remains the clearest threat to United’s defence.

Rayan Cherki has quickly become influential, contributing both goals and assists during City’s perfect start. His ability to receive the ball between midfield and defence could create serious problems for the hosts.

Paul Merson believes the derby will provide the first major examination of City under Maresca. He noted that victories can hide weaknesses but warned that City’s ability to keep winning should concern their title rivals, according to his Sky Sports analysis.

Manchester United Team News

Carrick managed the minutes of several players during the Champions League victory. Youri Tielemans was replaced at half-time, while Kobbie Mainoo left shortly after the hour mark.

The United manager explained that the changes allowed Mason Mount and Andrey Santos to gain minutes rather than being forced by injuries.

Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire remained unused substitutes, potentially placing them in contention for the derby.

Luke Shaw is doubtful after missing the Sabah squad because of a knock sustained against Everton. His condition will be assessed before Carrick finalises his team, according to The Standard’s United team update.

Recent Manchester Derby Results

The clubs have recorded two victories each and one draw across their last five Premier League meetings.

The even record, documented in Manchester City’s official last-five-meetings review, shows that league position does not always determine this derby.

Players to Watch

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes scored against Sabah after combining with Tielemans. His creativity, shooting and ability to deliver set pieces make him United’s most important attacking influence.

Benjamin Sesko

Sesko has scored in consecutive matches and offers pace, strength and runs behind defenders. His form gives Carrick a significant selection decision after Cunha also scored in Europe.

Erling Haaland

Haaland scored twice in City’s 3-0 derby victory in September 2025. United must restrict the service reaching him rather than relying only on physical duels inside the penalty area.

Rayan Cherki

Cherki’s movement could exploit gaps around United’s midfield. Preventing him from turning and combining with Haaland will be essential.

Expert Prediction

Peter Crouch believes United have attackers capable of troubling City, specifically highlighting Fernandes, Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Rashford.

Despite recognising United’s threat, the former England striker predicted a 1-0 Manchester City victory in comments reported by Football365.

Match-Result Prediction

United’s European victory should improve confidence, while their recent derby record provides encouragement. City, however, have started the league season more consistently and possess the superior defensive record.

Alternative Betting Markets

A Manchester City draw-no-bet selection accounts for United’s home advantage while favouring the visitors’ stronger league form.

Both teams to score—Yes may interest eligible supporters because United have scored nine goals across their last three matches but remain defensively vulnerable.

Over 2.5 total goals is another possibility, although two of the last five league derbies produced no more than two goals. Haaland and Fernandes are potential anytime-scorer options, but no player is guaranteed to score.

Take-Home for Ugandan Supporters

The 6:30 pm Ugandan kickoff is well suited to supporters gathering in homes, sports bars and Premier League fan communities across Kampala, Jinja, Gulu and Mbarara.

United fans will draw confidence from the Sabah victory and January’s derby success. City supporters can point to their perfect league start, Haaland’s form and Maresca’s opportunity to secure a defining early victory.

Verdict

City enter the derby with stronger league form, but United’s attacking options and Old Trafford advantage should make this their most difficult test so far.

The midfield contest, United’s defensive organisation and the service supplied to Haaland may decide the match. City are slight favourites, although recent meetings suggest another derby surprise cannot be dismissed.
