Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Fernandes Scores Hat-Trick

Manchester United recovered from an uncertain opening half to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 in an entertaining Premier League match at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick, while Bryan Mbeumo also found the net and Jacob Greaves conceded an own goal. Leif Davis and Chuba Akpom scored for Ipswich, who competed strongly before United’s second-half attacking quality proved decisive.

The victory was an important response from Michael Carrick’s team following their 2-0 opening-weekend defeat at Hull City.

Ipswich Take a Surprise Lead

Manchester United began positively but were punished in the 29th minute. Abdul Fatawu attacked down the right, held off Luke Shaw and crossed towards Davis, who finished off the crossbar to give Ipswich a surprise lead.

Davis almost struck again shortly afterwards, but his close-range effort was comfortably handled by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The visitors’ advantage lasted until the 40th minute. Marcelino Nunez lost his footing in midfield, allowing Matheus Cunha to launch a rapid counterattack. Cunha released Fernandes, who drove a left-footed finish beyond goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.

The teams entered half-time level at 1-1 after a competitive first period in which Ipswich repeatedly demonstrated their attacking threat.

United Take Control After Half-Time

Manchester United increased their intensity after the interval and almost moved ahead when Marcus Rashford’s cross found Mbeumo, whose close-range attempt struck the crossbar.

The breakthrough arrived in the 57th minute following a crowded passage inside the Ipswich penalty area. Harry Maguire’s effort deflected off Greaves and crossed the line. The goal was eventually recorded as an own goal after a VAR review.

United were awarded a penalty three minutes later when Greaves brought down Cunha. Fernandes converted from the spot in the 61st minute to establish a 3-1 advantage.

The captain completed his hat-trick six minutes later, calmly finishing after Ipswich failed to clear a United attack. Fernandes’ three goals earned him the player-of-the-match award and provided another reminder of his importance to Carrick’s team.

The Guardian’s live match report recorded that it was Fernandes’ third hat-trick for Manchester United.

Mbeumo Scores Before Akpom’s Consolation

Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute. Fernandes turned creator with an excellent through ball, allowing the forward to beat the advancing Scherpen with a composed finish.

Ipswich continued attacking despite the heavy deficit and were rewarded in the first minute of stoppage time. Julio Enciso dispossessed Lisandro Martínez and crossed for Akpom to score from close range.

The late goal did not affect the result, but it reflected Ipswich’s willingness to keep competing throughout the match.

Fernandes Leads Powerful United Attack

Fernandes was the outstanding performer, combining intelligent movement, clinical finishing and creativity. In addition to scoring three times, the midfielder supplied the pass for Mbeumo’s goal.

Rashford also impressed on his return to United’s Premier League starting XI, while Kobbie Mainoo helped the hosts control midfield and supported several dangerous attacks.

United registered 33 attempts, their highest total in a Premier League match since 2016, according to the Manchester United statistics review. Eleven of those efforts were on target, showing the sustained pressure placed on the Ipswich defence.

However, the two goals conceded will remind Carrick that defensive improvement is still required. Davis found too much space for the opening goal, while Martínez’s late mistake allowed Ipswich to score again.

Verdict

Manchester United deserved their victory after producing a dominant second-half performance. Fernandes inspired the comeback with a superb hat-trick, while Mbeumo and Cunha helped stretch an Ipswich defence that had competed impressively for an hour.

The 5-2 result gives Carrick’s side their first Premier League points of the season and restores confidence after the defeat at Hull. Ipswich can take encouragement from their attacking ambition but must become more resilient when opponents increase the pressure.
