The Netherlands will look to maintain their unbeaten UEFA Nations League campaign when they welcome Serbia to the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Xavi Hernández’s Oranje have collected five points from their opening three Group A2 matches after draws with Germany and Greece, either side of a 2-1 victory over Serbia.

Serbia arrive in the Netherlands under considerably greater pressure. Veljko Paunović’s team have lost all three matches and remain without a point after Thursday’s 2-0 defeat against Germany.

Netherlands Remain Unbeaten

The Netherlands have yet to lose in this Nations League campaign, although Hernández will want his team to turn more of their performances into victories.

They opened with a 1-1 draw against Germany before travelling to Belgrade and defeating Serbia 2-1.

Mexx Meerdink was the standout performer in Belgrade. Making his first international start, the forward scored twice, including the winning goal after Luka Jović had equalised for Serbia.

The Oranje then travelled to Greece on Thursday and found themselves in serious trouble.

Fotis Ioannidis scored and created another for Giorgos Masouras as Greece established a 2-0 advantage. However, the Netherlands recovered, with substitute Tijjani Reijnders scoring an 89th-minute equaliser to complete a 2-2 draw.

That comeback preserved their unbeaten record and kept them within two points of Greece.

Serbia Still Searching for First Point

Serbia’s Nations League campaign has followed a very different path.

They started with a 2-1 home defeat against Greece before losing by the same scoreline to the Netherlands.

Germany then inflicted a third successive defeat on Thursday, winning 2-0.

After Meerdink put the visitors ahead in Belgrade, Jović equalised from close range. Serbia continued searching for another equaliser after Meerdink restored the Dutch lead and even sent goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić forward for a late corner.

What the First Meeting Tells Us

The 2-1 result in Belgrade was competitive rather than one-sided.

Hernández admitted afterwards that his Netherlands side could have performed better with their high press, defensive line and mid-block, even though he felt they deserved the victory.

Captain Virgil van Dijk similarly acknowledged that the Oranje could be critical of their performance despite collecting three points.

That should offer Serbia some encouragement.

However, the return fixture comes in Eindhoven, where the Netherlands will expect to control more possession and create opportunities against a Serbian defence that has conceded twice in each of its three group matches.

Players to Watch

Mexx Meerdink – Netherlands

Meerdink has made an immediate impact at international level.

The 23-year-old scored both Netherlands goals in the reverse fixture, and UEFA currently credits him with two goals from three Nations League appearances.

His movement inside the penalty area could again trouble Serbia’s central defence.

Luka Jović – Serbia

Jović scored Serbia’s goal against the Netherlands in Belgrade and remains one of Paunović’s principal attacking threats.

UEFA lists him with one goal from three Nations League appearances.

Netherlands Team News

UEFA’s current squad list gives Hernández plenty of defensive and midfield options.

Van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Jurriën Timber, Denzel Dumfries, Nathan Aké and Jeremie Frimpong are among the defenders available.

Ryan Gravenberch, Reijnders, Joey Veerman and Teun Koopmeiners provide midfield depth, while Meerdink, Crysencio Summerville, Joshua Zirkzee, Noa Lang and Ruben van Bommel are listed among the attacking options.

Bart Verbruggen has played all three Nations League matches in goal.

Confirmed starting line-ups should be released approximately one hour before kick-off.

Serbia Team News

Serbia’s squad contains several familiar names from European club football.

Strahinja Pavlović, Filip Kostić and Strahinja Eraković are defensive options, while Nemanja Gudelj, Saša Lukić and Nemanja Maksimović provide experience in midfield.

In attack, Paunović can call upon Jović, Dušan Tadić, Andrija Živković, Dejan Joveljić and Mihajlo Cvetković. UEFA’s latest wider squad information also lists Dušan Vlahović.

Serbia’s biggest challenge is finding a combination capable of converting competitive performances into points.

Netherlands vs Serbia Prediction

The Netherlands have not been flawless, but their results provide a clear contrast with Serbia’s opening three defeats.

Match result: A Netherlands home victory is one possible outcome based on their unbeaten start, home advantage, and 2-1 victory in Belgrade.

Both teams to score: Serbia scored against the Netherlands in the reverse fixture, while the Oranje have conceded in all three group matches. That makes both teams scoring a plausible scenario.

Total goals: Over 1.5 goals has occurred in all three Netherlands matches and all three Serbia matches in this Nations League campaign.

Netherlands team goals: Serbia have conceded exactly twice in each of their opening three matches, providing some statistical context for Netherlands over 1.5 team goals.

Possible score: Netherlands 2-1 Serbia.

These are match assessments rather than guaranteed outcomes. Recent form and previous meetings provide context but cannot determine Sunday’s result.

What Netherlands vs Serbia Means for Ugandan Supporters

The 9:45 p.m. EAT kick-off provides another attractive Sunday-night Nations League fixture for Ugandan football followers.

Premier League supporters will recognise several Netherlands players immediately. Van Dijk, Van de Ven, Timber, Aké, Gravenberch and Frimpong are among the names familiar to viewers who regularly follow English club football.

Serbia also bring established European names, including Jović, Tadić, Kostić and potentially Vlahović.

There is also a genuine competitive storyline. Greece currently lead Group A2, but the Netherlands remain only two points behind. A victory in Eindhoven could therefore increase the pressure at the top of the section, depending on the result of Greece against Germany on the same evening.

For Serbia, the situation is considerably more urgent. A fourth consecutive defeat would leave their League A campaign in serious difficulty with only the November fixtures remaining.
