Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5–1. Read the match report, statistics, and what it means for Ugandan supporters.

Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City defeated AEK Athens 5–1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, securing their second Champions League victory of the campaign.

Elliot Anderson opened the scoring, and Rayan Cherki also struck, while Stavros Pilios briefly reduced the deficit for the visitors.

For City supporters in Uganda, the encouragement extended beyond the scoreline. Enzo Maresca made eight changes, left Erling Haaland unused and still watched his side produce a convincing attacking performance.

Anderson Opens His City Account

City took the lead after 12 minutes when Anderson reacted to the rebound from Enzo Fernández’s free-kick, which struck the underside of the crossbar.

The midfielder’s first goal for the club rewarded his determination to follow the shot rather than wait for the defence to clear.

Allan later hit the woodwork as City searched for another breakthrough. The hosts eventually doubled their advantage in the 34th minute, with Foden finishing after good work from Rico Lewis.

At the interval, City had converted their attacking superiority into a useful cushion.

Cherki Answers AEK’s Brief Revival

Pilios gave AEK hope in the 52nd minute, finishing a counterattack to make it 2–1.

That was the moment when City’s control faced its clearest examination. A second visiting goal would have changed the atmosphere and placed greater pressure on a heavily rotated team.

Instead, Cherki restored the two-goal advantage five minutes later. Receiving Foden’s pass, he created room with a drag-back before finishing low.

The response prevented AEK from building sustained momentum and allowed City to regain command.

Foden Completes His Hat-Trick

Foden scored again in the 65th minute after another Lewis assist, then completed his treble in the 76th minute from Ryan McAidoo’s cross.

The finishes demonstrated different strengths: movement into scoring positions, clean technique and awareness around the six-yard area.

In his post-match reaction, Foden said playing centrally between the lines suited him. He also acknowledged that his performance still contained loose passing and described his progress towards peak form as ongoing.

That assessment provides useful balance. This was a major contribution, but maintaining that standard matters more than declaring his recovery complete after one evening.

Lewis Provides the Creative Support

Foden supplied the headline, but Lewis played a significant supporting role.

The full-back created two goals and completed the match. Speaking through City’s official channels, he described the performance as an important confidence boost after limited playing time.

For Maresca, that contribution strengthens the case for rotation. Players outside the regular starting side need opportunities, and productive performances make future selection decisions easier.

Lewis also spoke positively about the clarity of the manager’s instructions. His display offered practical evidence of a player understanding where to move and how to connect with teammates.

Maresca’s Squad Delivers

Maresca reiterated his belief in Foden afterwards, describing him as one of England’s leading players and emphasising the importance of helping him perform consistently.

The manager also highlighted the collective rather than focusing exclusively on individual stars.

That theme suited an evening featuring Champions League debuts for Floyd Samba, Allan, McAidoo, Vitor Reis and Kaden Braithwaite.

What It Means for Ugandan Supporters

For City followers in Kampala, Jinja, Gulu and Mbarara, the most useful takeaway is the range of attacking options.

Haaland remains influential, but this match showed how Foden’s movement, Cherki’s invention and Lewis’s delivery can combine when the striker rests.

For supporters catching up through highlights, the response after Pilios scored deserves attention alongside the hat-trick. City faced a potentially awkward passage and answered promptly.

The academy contributions also offer a football lesson relevant to Uganda: developing players need meaningful opportunities within a clear team structure.
