Uganda Premier League Matchday One Review

Review the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League opening round as NEC beat KCCA, Entebbe UPPC shock Vipers and URA complete a comeback victory

The 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League began with upsets and early warnings for established clubs. Matchday One produced 14 goals across nine fixtures, but the scoring total did not prevent the opening weekend from delivering storylines.

NEC defeated KCCA 2-0, Entebbe UPPC stunned defending champions Vipers, and URA came from behind to beat Maroons. SC Villa, Express and Kitara also failed to win, meaning none of the five traditional heavyweights named in Kawowo Sports’ review collected maximum points.

NEC Make an Early Statement Against KCCA

NEC delivered arguably the most convincing performance of the round by beating KCCA 2-0 at the MTN Omondi Stadium. Richard Basangwa opened the scoring in the fifth minute after James Jarieko created the opportunity, giving the visitors an ideal platform from which to control the contest.

KCCA searched for an equaliser but found goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo and NEC’s organised defence difficult to overcome. Substitute Pius Obuya eventually secured the victory with the second goal in stoppage time.

The result strengthened the belief that NEC could challenge under Badru Kaddu. The Diehards enjoyed an 18-match unbeaten sequence last season before losing to SC Villa and recovered from the bottom to finish fifth. Beginning his first full campaign, Kaddu has built a confident, efficient side capable of troubling leading opponents.

Entebbe UPPC Shock Champions Vipers

The opening round’s biggest surprise arrived at St Mary’s Stadium, where Entebbe UPPC earned a 1-0 victory over Vipers. Kevin Bady Dasylva inadvertently turned Thomas Ochungo’s dangerous delivery into his own net in the 32nd minute after a costly defensive misunderstanding.

Entebbe UPPC then protected their advantage through commitment, tactical discipline and an assured performance from goalkeeper Denis Otim. Tah Barni Kelvin and Ochungo were important in a defence that limited the champions’ attacking influence, while Ibrahim Mugulusi helped the visitors counter whenever opportunities appeared.

It was Vipers’ first home league defeat since losing 1-0 to KCCA in 2024. Abdallah Mubiru masterminded both setbacks, coaching KCCA then and Entebbe UPPC now. One defeat will not determine the champions’ campaign, but their subdued attack demands a response.

Traditional Giants Struggle to Start

BUL defeated Express 1-0 through Mpasa Swabir’s goal, giving Alex Isabirye’s side a valuable opening victory. Express must improve their attacking sharpness after leaving Njeru without a goal or point.

At Wankulukuku, Andrew Okumu headed SC Villa ahead against Kitara. However, Chrispas Asiki equalised deep into added time to earn the Royals a 1-1 draw. The late concession disappointed Villa, while Kitara were rewarded for their persistence.

URA Show Character Under Jimmy Kintu

URA began Jimmy Kintu’s tenure with an impressive 2-1 comeback against Maroons. Darius Ojok put the Prison Warders ahead in the first half, but Dissan Galiwango equalised before Abraham Tusubira scored the late winner against his former club.

After finishing 10th last season, URA offered evidence of resilience and renewed ambition. The four-time champions still have plenty to prove, but the comeback gives Kintu a strong foundation. Sustained intensity will determine whether they are ready to return to the upper positions.

Mixed Welcome for the Promoted Clubs

The newcomers experienced contrasting outcomes. Kigezi Home Boyz lost 2-1 to Lugazi after Livingstone Mulondo’s late winner followed goals from Cromwell Rwothomio and Mike Walaga. Ntugasaze lost 1-0 to returning Blacks Power, with Andrea Noll Ogwal scoring the decisive goal.

Kataka enjoyed the strongest result among the debutants by holding UPDF to a goalless draw at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. An away point provides a useful starting platform, although all three promoted teams will need to adapt quickly to the top flight’s pace and physical demands.

Police also began positively, defeating Mbarara City 1-0 through Ivan Mayanja. Five of the nine matches produced clean sheets, underlining how defensive organisation shaped the weekend.

Low Scoring and Small Crowds Raise Early Questions

Fewer than two goals per match suggests teams are still developing attacking cohesion after squad changes. New combinations require time, while players may also be rebuilding competitive sharpness after the off-season. It is too early to call this a lasting pattern, but finishing will be watched closely.

Small attendances across several grounds were another concern. Clubs and league organisers must continue improving promotion, matchday experiences and supporter engagement. A competitive domestic league needs energetic crowds to strengthen its atmosphere, visibility and commercial appeal.

Conclusion

Matchday One showed why the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League could be highly competitive. NEC produced the weekend’s clearest statement, Entebbe UPPC demonstrated that champions can be beaten through organisation and courage, and URA displayed the resilience needed for a revival.

Vipers, KCCA, Express and SC Villa now require responses, while the promoted clubs have received an immediate lesson in top-flight demands. Conclusions should not be rushed after one round, but the opening results have already challenged old expectations. If the early unpredictability continues and attacking quality improves, Ugandan football supporters could be set for an absorbing campaign.
