Denmark 2–4 Portugal
Portugal maintained their perfect UEFA Nations League start with an entertaining 4–2 victory over Denmark at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix found the net for Portugal, while Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Højlund scored for the hosts. Denmark twice fought back to equalise, but Portugal’s attacking quality ultimately decided a thrilling six-goal contest.
New captain Bruno Fernandes produced a midfield masterclass, supplying two assists and controlling several of Portugal’s most dangerous attacks. Ramos also impressed with a goal and an assist as he strengthened his claim for a regular starting place.
João Cancelo Completes Brilliant Portugal Move
Portugal needed only 13 minutes to open the scoring.
Ramos dropped into a creative position before releasing João Cancelo, who continued his run into the penalty area and produced a composed finish past Denmark goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
The move demonstrated the fluidity of Portugal’s attack. Cancelo regularly moved forward from his defensive position, while Ramos created space by combining with Bruno Fernandes and the players around him.
Denmark responded in the 23rd minute through Mikkel Damsgaard. The midfielder collected the ball near the edge of the area and curled an excellent shot beyond Diogo Costa to make it 1–1.
However, the hosts were level for only two minutes.
Gonçalo Ramos Scores in Back-to-Back Matches
Ramos restored Portugal’s lead following a brilliant combination with Fernandes.
After linking with the striker, Fernandes played a perfectly weighted first-time pass through the Danish defence. Ramos accelerated into the open space and calmly finished at the near post to put Portugal 2–1 ahead.
It was another important contribution from the striker, who scored for the second consecutive match. His movement, direct running and ability to connect with Portugal’s midfield caused Denmark problems throughout the contest.
Ramos ended the match with one goal and one assist, having also created Cancelo’s opener. The performance showed that he can contribute beyond simply finishing chances.
Portugal carried their 2–1 advantage into half-time, but Denmark were not finished.
Rasmus Højlund Brings Denmark Level Again
Denmark began the second half with greater intensity and equalised in the 53rd minute.
Damsgaard turned provider, releasing Rasmus Højlund behind the Portugal defence. The striker held off Rúben Dias before lifting a clever finish over the advancing Diogo Costa.
Højlund’s goal made it 2–2 and briefly shifted the momentum towards Denmark. The hosts enjoyed more possession overall, but Portugal created the better shooting opportunities, recording 19 attempts and 10 shots on target.
Vitinha Scores First Portugal Goal
Portugal reclaimed the lead in the 67th minute through Vitinha.
Fernandes delivered an accurate free-kick into the penalty area, where Vitinha escaped his marker and directed a clever near-post header beyond Hermansen.
It was Vitinha’s first senior international goal for Portugal—and an important one in a difficult away match.
The goal also completed Fernandes’ brace of assists. Wearing the captain’s armband, the midfielder led through his creativity, movement and delivery from set pieces.
Fernandes did not need to score to become one of the match’s decisive players. His pass for Ramos and free-kick for Vitinha were two moments of outstanding execution.
João Félix Continues Impressive Scoring Form
João Félix came off the bench and completed the victory in the 87th minute.
Diogo Dalot drove forward on the right during a quick Portuguese counterattack before finding Félix, who produced a composed finish to make it 4–2.
The goal continued Félix’s excellent form for his country and once again demonstrated the depth available to Portugal. Jorge Jesus was able to introduce a technically gifted attacker capable of exploiting the spaces left by a Denmark side chasing another equaliser.
The late goal finally ended Denmark’s resistance and confirmed Portugal’s third consecutive Nations League victory.
Rafael Leão Takes Portugal’s Number Seven Shirt
Another major talking point was Rafael Leão wearing Portugal’s number seven shirt.
Leão’s pace and ability to stretch defences provide Portugal with a dangerous option on the left wing. Although he did not score, his presence helped create space for Cancelo, Ramos and Fernandes to attack through central areas.
The number carries enormous significance in Portuguese football, but Leão’s task will be to express his own qualities rather than imitate the player previously associated with it.
Bruno Fernandes Leads Portugal’s New-Look Attack
Portugal’s victory was built around collective movement and clinical finishing.
Ramos regularly dropped deep before attacking the space behind Denmark’s defence. Cancelo pushed forward aggressively, Vitinha timed his movement into the penalty area, and Fernandes repeatedly found the correct pass.
João Félix then provided the finishing touch from the bench.
Denmark enjoyed periods of control and twice recovered from falling behind, but Portugal possessed more variety in the final third. Four different goalscorers underlined the number of attacking threats available to Jorge Jesus.
What Is Next for Portugal?
Portugal will conclude the international window by hosting Norway, while Denmark travel to face Wales.
After defeating Denmark in Copenhagen, Portugal will approach their next fixture with growing confidence. Ramos’ scoring form, Fernandes’ leadership and Vitinha’s increasing influence suggest this side is developing into an exciting and difficult team to contain.
