His Hammers Tenure and Managerial Career
West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo with immediate effect following a disappointing start to the 2026/27 EFL Championship season.
The club confirmed the decision on 3 November 2026 after conducting what it described as a thorough review of the campaign. West Ham’s board concluded that a managerial change was required to keep the club’s objectives and expectations on track.
Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also departed. Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will temporarily oversee preparations for West Ham’s next Championship fixture against Cardiff City while the search for a permanent successor continues.
Why Did West Ham Sack Nuno Espírito Santo?
West Ham are eighth in the Championship after 13 matches, having collected six wins. Although they remain within touching distance of the promotion places, their position falls below expectations for a club widely tipped to return to the Premier League immediately.
The Hammers are six points behind the league leaders and four points outside the automatic-promotion positions. Back-to-back home defeats ultimately increased the pressure on Nuno.
West Ham first lost 3–2 to Southampton before suffering a damaging 3–1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at London Stadium. The West Brom result proved to be Nuno’s final match, with supporters making their frustration clear as the team struggled defensively.
Home form became a serious concern. West Ham conceded six goals across their final two home matches under Nuno, while defeats against Charlton Athletic, Southampton and West Brom weakened confidence that he could deliver the promotion campaign expected by the board.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s Time at West Ham
Nuno was appointed West Ham’s 20th permanent manager on 27 September 2025. He arrived with extensive experience in England after spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.
His first objective was to stabilise West Ham and protect their Premier League status. However, the Portuguese coach could not prevent relegation at the end of the 2025/26 season.
The board kept faith with him and allowed him to lead the club’s attempt to return to the top flight. There were encouraging periods, including a nine-match unbeaten league run, but the momentum disappeared after consecutive losses to Southampton and West Brom.
Nuno’s teams are normally associated with defensive organisation, physical discipline and quick counterattacks. At West Ham, however, the side frequently lacked consistency. Defensive errors, poor home results and an inability to control important moments eventually brought his tenure to an end.
Nuno’s Managerial Career and Major Achievements
Nuno began his senior managerial career with Rio Ave in 2012. He guided the Portuguese club to the finals of both major domestic cup competitions and secured European qualification for the first time in its history.
He moved to Valencia in 2014 and led the Spanish club to fourth place in La Liga during his only complete season. A spell at FC Porto followed, where his team finished second in the Portuguese league in 2016/17.
Nuno’s most celebrated period came at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Appointed in 2017, he won the Championship title in his first season and secured promotion to the Premier League.
Wolves then finished seventh in consecutive top-flight campaigns, recorded a club-record 59 Premier League points and reached the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

His time at Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 was far less successful and ended after only a few months. Nuno rebuilt his reputation with Al-Ittihad, winning the Saudi Super Cup and Saudi Pro League title.
He returned to English football with Nottingham Forest in December 2023, initially securing Premier League survival. Forest later finished seventh and reached the FA Cup semi-finals during an impressive 2024/25 campaign.
Who Could Replace Nuno at West Ham?
West Ham have confirmed only that their recruitment process is underway. Sky Sports reports that former Hammers midfielder Scott Parker is close to taking charge, with discussions believed to be at an advanced stage. No appointment has been officially confirmed.
Parker would bring valuable Championship experience, having previously won promotion to the Premier League with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. His history with West Ham could also help him reconnect the team with supporters.
However, the next permanent manager must improve West Ham’s home form, organise the defence and quickly restore the confidence required to challenge for automatic promotion.
What Comes Next for West Ham and Nuno?
West Ham’s immediate focus is their away match against Cardiff City. With the club only four points from the automatic-promotion positions, the season remains recoverable—but the next appointment must make an immediate impact.
For Nuno, the dismissal represents another difficult ending in England, but his record still includes promotions, domestic titles, European qualification and successful rebuilding jobs. His achievements at Wolves, Al-Ittihad and Nottingham Forest should ensure that he remains an attractive option for clubs seeking an experienced manager.
