Champions League All-Time Top Scorers: Ronaldo Leads Messi, Lewandowski and Mbappé

The UEFA Champions League has featured many of football’s greatest attackers, but Cristiano Ronaldo remains the competition’s undisputed goalscoring king.

Ronaldo leads the Champions League’s all-time scoring chart with 140 goals, followed by Lionel Messi on 129 and Robert Lewandowski on 109. Karim Benzema occupies fourth place with 90, while Kylian Mbappé has moved level with Real Madrid legend Raúl González on 71.

UEFA’s official rankings exclude qualifying-round goals, which explains why Ronaldo’s total may occasionally appear as 141 on other historical lists.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Champions League’s Greatest Goalscorer

Cristiano Ronaldo sits at the top with an incredible 140 goals in 183 Champions League appearances.

The Portuguese forward scored in the competition for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. However, his most successful period came in Spain, where he scored 105 Champions League goals for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo’s record is about far more than his total number of goals. He regularly delivered in knockout matches, scored decisive goals under intense pressure and finished as the competition’s leading scorer across multiple campaigns.

His most productive Champions League season came in 2013/14, when he scored a record 17 goals as Real Madrid won their long-awaited tenth European title. Ronaldo also won five Champions League finals—one with Manchester United and four with Real Madrid.

Although he no longer plays in European club football, his 140-goal record continues to set the standard for every emerging striker.

Lionel Messi: The Most Efficient of the Leading Five

Lionel Messi ranks second with 129 goals in 163 matches, giving him a slightly better goals-per-game ratio than Ronaldo among the five players featured.

The Argentine scored 120 of his Champions League goals for Barcelona before adding another nine with Paris Saint-Germain. His Barcelona total remains the record for the most Champions League goals scored by one player for a single club.

Messi’s Champions League career was built on more than traditional penalty-area finishing. He could receive possession in midfield, carry the ball through defensive lines, create opportunities for teammates and still arrive in scoring positions.

His performances against Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid produced some of the competition’s most memorable individual moments.

Messi also holds the record for the most goals scored during the Champions League group or league phase, with 80—seven more than Ronaldo and Lewandowski.

Robert Lewandowski Joins the 100-Goal Club

Robert Lewandowski is the only other player to reach 100 Champions League goals.

The Polish striker has registered 109 goals, placing him comfortably third in the all-time standings. He has found the net for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Lewandowski combines intelligent movement with outstanding finishing using either foot or his head. His ability to occupy central defenders and convert limited opportunities has allowed him to remain effective throughout his career.

He enjoyed his greatest European success with Bayern during the 2019/20 season, scoring 15 goals as the German club won the Champions League. He has also recorded several remarkable individual performances, including scoring four times against Real Madrid for Dortmund in the 2013 semifinal.

Lewandowski reached his first 80 Champions League goals in only 100 games—two matches faster than Messi reached the same milestone.

Karim Benzema’s Late-Career Champions League Explosion

Karim Benzema occupies fourth place with 90 Champions League goals.

The French forward scored for Lyon before joining Real Madrid, where he developed into one of the most complete strikers of his generation. While Ronaldo was at Madrid, Benzema frequently adapted his game to create space and connect attacks.

After Ronaldo’s departure, Benzema became the team’s main goalscorer.

His performances during Real Madrid’s victorious 2021/22 campaign strengthened his Champions League legacy. Benzema produced decisive goals against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City as Madrid completed a succession of dramatic comebacks.

Of his 90 Champions League goals, 78 came for Real Madrid—the third-highest total scored by a player for one club, behind Messi’s 120 for Barcelona and Ronaldo’s 105 for Madrid.

Can Kylian Mbappé Break Ronaldo’s Record?

Kylian Mbappé represents the greatest immediate threat to the established order.

The Real Madrid forward has scored 71 Champions League goals, placing him joint-fifth with Raúl González. Mbappé reached the mark while representing Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

He remains 69 goals behind Ronaldo, meaning he would need several more highly productive Champions League seasons to equal the record.

However, Mbappé has two important advantages: time and consistency. He became the youngest player to reach 60 Champions League goals and scored a record 13 times during the 2025/26 league phase.

If he remains fit and Real Madrid continue progressing into the knockout rounds, Ronaldo’s total could eventually move within reach.

Haaland, Kane and Salah Continue Their Pursuit

Several other active forwards are climbing the Champions League rankings.

Erling Haaland has scored 59 goals and possesses an extraordinary scoring rate. He has already found the net for Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City.

Harry Kane has 54 goals, while Mohamed Salah has reached 50. Both players remain inside the competition’s historic top group, although their ability to challenge Ronaldo’s record will depend on longevity and deep knockout-stage runs.

Haaland appears particularly capable of climbing quickly. UEFA statistics show that he has averaged more than one goal per appearance during the group and league phases of his Champions League career.

Will Ronaldo’s Champions League Record Ever Be Broken?

Ronaldo’s 140-goal total remains one of football’s greatest records.

Messi finished only 11 goals behind, while Lewandowski became the third player to pass 100. Mbappé and Haaland now have the age, talent and scoring ability to launch long-term challenges, but both must maintain their form across many seasons.

The expanded league-phase format may provide modern forwards with additional matches, yet reaching 140 goals will still demand fitness, consistency and repeated success in the knockout rounds.

For now, the Champions League crown still belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo.
