Yasin Ayari Hands City Back-to-Back Premier League Defeats

Manchester City 0-1 Brighton

Manchester City suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat after Yasin Ayari’s early goal earned Brighton a historic 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

The Seagulls produced a disciplined defensive performance to avenge their midweek Carabao Cup elimination against City. Brighton had drawn that cup tie 2-2 before losing 4-3 on penalties, but they responded four days later by securing all three Premier League points.

Ayari scored the match’s only goal in the 11th minute before goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and captain Lewis Dunk helped Brighton withstand intense City pressure. The result was Brighton’s first-ever away victory against Manchester City in any competition.

Yasin Ayari Punishes Manchester City’s Defensive Error

Brighton entered the match with confidence and immediately pressed City high up the pitch.

The decisive goal arrived following a quickly taken Lewis Dunk free kick. Diego Gómez delivered the ball across the penalty area, where Matheus Nunes failed to complete his attempted clearance.

The ball reached Maxim De Cuyper, who directed it into Ayari’s path. The Swedish midfielder calmly finished from six yards to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma and give Brighton an 11th-minute lead.

It was Ayari’s third goal of the season and his second in three Premier League matches. More importantly, it gave Brighton something to protect against one of the division’s most dangerous attacking teams.

City Control Possession but Waste Opportunities

City responded by dominating possession and pushing Brighton deeper into their defensive half.

Iliman Ndiaye had a good opportunity to equalise when Elliot Anderson delivered a cross into the six-yard box, but his header travelled wide. He later forced Verbruggen into a save, while Dunk made two important blocks to prevent Erling Haaland from finding the net.

City also appealed for penalties following several suspected handball incidents, but referee Craig Pawson allowed play to continue.

Despite controlling large periods of the opening half, City failed to consistently test Verbruggen. Brighton remained compact, protected the central areas and attempted to threaten through quick counterattacks.

Brighton Miss Chance to Double Their Lead

The Seagulls should have made it 2-0 shortly after halftime.

Ayari timed his run well before delivering the ball across goal to an unmarked De Cuyper. However, the Belgian attempted a first-time finish and sent his effort over the crossbar.

The miss allowed City to remain in the game, and Enzo Maresca’s side increased the pressure as the second half progressed.

Ndiaye produced a powerful strike that Verbruggen tipped onto the crossbar. Nunes then tried to make amends for his first-half mistake, but the Brighton goalkeeper made another strong save.

Verbruggen and Dunk Lead Brighton’s Resistance

Brighton’s victory was built on an outstanding defensive performance.

Verbruggen completed seven saves as City registered 21 attempts and six shots on target. Dunk repeatedly placed himself between the ball and Haaland, while Luka Vušković also made an important interception with the Norwegian striker waiting inside the penalty area.

Nico O’Reilly headed wide late in the match, and Jérémy Doku was denied by Verbruggen during stoppage time. Brighton survived the final wave of pressure to secure their sixth clean sheet of the Premier League season—the best total in the division at that stage.

The Seagulls have now won five of their last six league matches, keeping clean sheets in all five victories.

Brighton Get Their Carabao Cup Revenge

Brighton’s victory was particularly satisfying after their painful cup elimination at the same stadium.

Fabian Hürzeler’s team had twice taken the lead during the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie, but City recovered to force a 2-2 draw before winning the penalty shootout 4-3.

Hürzeler spoke about wanting revenge before the Premier League rematch, and his players delivered with a resilient performance. Brighton’s victory was their first at the Etihad and their first away win against City in 18 attempts.

Back-to-Back Premier League Defeats for Manchester City

The result followed City’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, giving Maresca’s side consecutive league losses for the first time since August 2025.

City also failed to score in a Premier League match for the first time in 25 games. Although they created enough opportunities to earn at least a point, poor finishing and another avoidable defensive mistake proved costly.

Arsenal subsequently defeated Liverpool to move three points clear at the top, leaving City second on 21 points. Brighton sit only two points behind City after continuing their impressive opening to the campaign.

Can Brighton Challenge for the Champions League Places?

Brighton’s performance demonstrated that they possess both attacking quality and defensive resilience.

The Seagulls are among the league’s highest-scoring teams, but their improved ability to protect narrow leads may be even more important. Beating City at the Etihad represents a major statement in their pursuit of European qualification.

If Brighton can maintain this consistency, they could become genuine contenders for a Champions League place.
