Liverpool travel to Austria to face LASK in their second UEFA Champions League phase match on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Andoni Iraola’s team began their European campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Atletico Madrid but enter this fixture after a damaging 3-0 Premier League defeat at home to Manchester City.

LASK also needs a response. The Austrian champions lost their opening Champions League match 1-0 against AEK Athens and are searching for their first points in the competition.

Liverpool are favourites because of their superior European experience, individual quality and previous success against LASK. However, injuries to Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai reduce Iraola’s attacking options.

Liverpool seek immediate response in Austria

Liverpool’s unbeaten start under Iraola ended with a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

The game remained goalless until Ryan Gravenberch’s dismissal in the 62nd minute. City then scored three second-half goals through Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki.

Liverpool’s response to playing with ten men was disappointing, but Iraola defended his players’ attitude and acknowledged that conceding immediately after the red card made the necessary tactical adjustment more difficult.

European competition offers an opportunity to move forward quickly. Liverpool’s opening 2-1 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid demonstrated their ability to respond after conceding first.

Dominik Szoboszlai equalised before Alexis Mac Allister scored the winner. Another victory in Austria would take Liverpool to six points and provide a strong foundation for qualification.

LASK facing difficult European challenge

LASK entered this season’s Champions League as Austrian champions, but their opening performance produced a narrow defeat against AEK Athens.

Their recent domestic form has also been inconsistent. They have struggled to protect leads and arrive without a victory in four matches across all competitions.

Manager Dietmar Kühbauer is likely to employ a back three and ask his team to defend compactly before attacking Liverpool through quick transitions. Christoph Lang’s pace and movement make him the most obvious threat, particularly if Liverpool’s full-backs advance simultaneously.

LASK should also target set pieces. Liverpool’s technical superiority makes an open contest dangerous for the hosts, but corners and wide free-kicks could allow their taller defenders to threaten Alisson.

Kühbauer’s team have lost nine consecutive Champions League matches across their different appearances. Ending that sequence against Liverpool will require defensive concentration and considerably greater attacking efficiency.

LASK vs Liverpool head-to-head record

The clubs previously met twice during the 2023/24 Europa League group stage. Liverpool won both matches and scored seven goals.

LASK led during the first encounter in Linz before Liverpool completed a second-half comeback. Cody Gakpo then scored twice in the 4-0 return victory at Anfield.

The previous results favour Liverpool, but team personnel and coaching systems have changed substantially since 2023.

LASK team news

LASK are expected to be without Nigerian winger Moses Usor because of a muscle injury. His absence removes one of their quickest transition players.

George Bello is also unavailable, while Bence Jørgensen and Marko Horvath require late fitness assessments. Ramiz Harakate remains out with a knee injury.

Kühbauer could use Christoph Lang alongside Samuel Adeniran in attack. Robert Ljubičić and Melayro Bogarde should provide midfield protection, while Xavier Mbuyamba is expected to organise the back three.

Possible LASK line-up: Jungwirth; Mbuyamba, Alemão, Andrade; Jørgensen, Ljubičić, Bogarde, Horvath, Dibango; Adeniran, Lang.

Liverpool team news

Liverpool travelled without Isak, Gakpo and Szoboszlai. Iraola confirmed that none of the three had returned to group training, although their injuries are not believed to be long-term problems.

Hugo Ekitiké, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley remain long-term absentees. Federico Chiesa is not registered in Liverpool’s Champions League squad.

Iraola is expected to rotate during a demanding schedule. Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni or Lewis Koumas could receive opportunities, while Gravenberch is available despite his domestic suspension.

Virgil van Dijk is in line to captain Liverpool for the 200th time across all competitions.

Possible Liverpool line-up: Alisson; Araújo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Muñoz, Wirtz, Barcola; Koumas.

Players to watch

Christoph Lang

Lang’s movement behind the defence provides LASK’s clearest attacking route. Liverpool must prevent him from receiving early passes in the spaces left by their advancing full-backs.

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz has recorded only one assist since joining Liverpool, but Iraola publicly expressed complete confidence in his creative midfielder. With Liverpool’s three leading scorers absent, Wirtz must assume greater responsibility between the lines.

Bradley Barcola

Barcola is still waiting for his first Liverpool goal or assist. His speed should nevertheless test LASK’s wing-backs, particularly when the hosts lose possession.

Alexis Mac Allister

Mac Allister scored Liverpool’s winner against Atletico Madrid. His passing can control the match, while his late movement towards the penalty area offers another potential source of goals.

Tactical analysis

Liverpool should dominate possession and press LASK high up the pitch. Gravenberch and Mac Allister will attempt to control central midfield while Wirtz occupies the spaces behind LASK’s midfield line.

Barcola and Muñoz can stretch the three-man defence by maintaining wide positions. If LASK’s wing-backs drop too deep, Liverpool will be able to sustain pressure around the penalty area.

LASK’s opportunity will come during transitions. Direct passes towards Lang and Adeniran could test Liverpool if Araújo and Milos Kerkez advance together.

The hosts must survive the opening pressure. An early Liverpool goal would force LASK to attack more ambitiously, creating further space for Wirtz and the visiting wingers.

Recent Liverpool results in context

Liverpool’s performances this season have mixed resilience with occasional defensive vulnerability.

They twice recovered from behind during a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, with Victor Muñoz scoring the late equaliser.

A more controlled display followed when Liverpool recorded a 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham. However, the Manchester City defeat showed that Iraola’s team can lose its structure after a major setback.

The challenge in Linz is to establish control without giving LASK counterattacking space.

LASK vs Liverpool prediction

Liverpool’s absences could reduce their attacking sharpness, especially if Iraola selects a younger centre-forward. LASK’s home support and compact structure may also keep the contest competitive during the first half.

The visitors still possess greater midfield quality, stronger defensive personnel and several attacking players capable of deciding the match individually.

Liverpool should control possession and eventually create enough opportunities for a professional away victory.

What the match means for Ugandan supporters

The 7:45 p.m. EAT kick-off is convenient for Liverpool’s large supporter community across Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara and other parts of Uganda.

The earlier start allows supporters to follow the full contest without remaining awake beyond midnight. Local viewers should check the latest listings from authorised Champions League broadcasters because channel allocations can change.

Confirmed line-ups should be released approximately one hour before kick-off. That announcement will reveal whether Iraola has selected an experienced side or given opportunities to Ngumoha, Nyoni and Koumas.

Verdict

Liverpool should have enough quality to secure their second Champions League victory despite missing Isak, Gakpo and Szoboszlai.

LASK’s home advantage, transition threat and set pieces deserve respect, but their recent form and nine-match Champions League losing sequence make an upset difficult to predict.

A controlled 2-0 Liverpool victory is the strongest forecast, although the visitors may need patience before breaking down LASK’s compact defence.
