First-Half Fireworks: Lazio Silence the Mapei Stadium
Sassuolo entered the encounter unbeaten at home, but their defensive resistance collapsed almost immediately.
Just two minutes in, Kenneth Taylor punished a poor clearance from Luca Lipani to give Lazio an early lead.
Sassuolo responded in the seventh minute when Josh Doig supplied Kristian Thorstvedt, whose deflected effort beat Christos Mandas to level the contest.
However, Lazio refused to surrender control.
In the 13th minute, Gustav Isaksen finished first-time from Mattia Zaccagni’s delivery to restore the visitors’ advantage.
Romano Floriani then added Lazio’s third goal, sliding home at the far post after Taylor delivered an inviting cross. It was a memorable moment for the youngster, who registered his first senior goal for the Biancocelesti.
Thorstvedt Red Card Changes the Game
Sassuolo’s comeback hopes suffered a major setback when Kristian Thorstvedt received a red card for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Mattia Zaccagni.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, the hosts continued fighting.
Armand Lauriente briefly thought he had scored, but the referee ruled his effort offside. Sebastiano Esposito subsequently pulled one back with a superb finish, reducing the deficit to 3-2.
Yet Lazio delivered another devastating blow before the interval.
Zaccagni rose to meet Isaksen’s cross in first-half stoppage time, heading past Stefano Turati to give Lazio a commanding 4-2 lead.
Noslin Scores Twice as Lazio Complete Six-Goal Rout
The second half brought even more frustration for Sassuolo, although goalkeeper Stefano Turati produced two impressive penalty saves.
After a VAR review, Lazio earned their first spot-kick when Simone Cinquegrano was penalized for handball. Zaccagni stepped forward, but his weak effort was comfortably saved.
Tijjani Noslin soon made amends for his teammate, curling a beautiful right-footed effort into the bottom corner to extend Lazio’s lead to 5-2.
The visitors were then awarded another penalty when Duje Caleta-Car fouled Isaksen inside the area.
This time, Davide Frattesi assumed responsibility, but Turati once again emerged victorious, denying Lazio from 12 yards for the second time.
Nevertheless, the goalkeeper could do little to prevent Noslin from completing his brace.
The Dutch forward unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that flew beyond Turati, sealing a comprehensive 6-2 victory.
What Lazio’s Victory Means for the Serie A Title Race
1st – Lazio’s league position
+3 – Points clear at the top
14th – Sassuolo’s position
The victory strengthened Lazio’s position as Serie A title contenders, putting them three points clear of their nearest challengers ahead of Inter Milan’s Wednesday fixture against Venezia.
Gattuso’s side demonstrated several qualities associated with championship-winning teams: clinical finishing, attacking versatility and the ability to capitalize on opposition mistakes.
For Sassuolo, the situation is increasingly concerning.
Alberto Aquilani’s side have now gone five Serie A matches without a victory, recording one draw and four defeats. Their 14th-place finish leaves them just four points above the relegation zone, and other results could increase the pressure.
