International Break 2026 Brings Major Football Action
Domestic football leagues have paused as the September–October 2026 international window gets underway, bringing national-team football back into focus.
The current FIFA international window runs from September 21 to October 6, 2026, with the expanded format allowing national teams to play more matches than in a conventional two-match international break.
For Nigerian football fans, however, the main focus is not the UEFA Nations League. The Super Eagles are beginning their campaign in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027 qualifiers.
Nigeria are in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau. The first two qualifying matches are scheduled for September 25 and September 29.
Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 Qualifying Campaign
Nigeria will begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign at home against Madagascar on September 25.
The Super Eagles will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
CAF has confirmed that Matchdays 1 and 2 of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers are being played between September 24 and October 6, with 48 African nations involved across 12 groups.
The AFCON PAMOJA 2027 tournament will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Because Tanzania is one of the co-hosts and has automatic qualification, only the highest-ranked team other than Tanzania will qualify from Group L alongside the host nation. This makes Nigeria’s two opening fixtures particularly important within the group format.
Nigerian Players Called Up for the AFCON Qualifiers
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle initially selected a 24-man squad for the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

CAF reported that Arthur Okonkwo, Isaac James and George Ilenikhena received their first senior Super Eagles call-ups for these qualifiers.
Victor Osimhen Ruled Out of Nigeria’s Opening Qualifiers
One of the major developments before the start of the international window is the absence of Victor Osimhen from Nigeria’s opening two AFCON qualifiers.
Osimhen was initially named in Chelle’s squad but was subsequently ruled out after suffering a muscle injury while playing for Galatasaray. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that he would miss the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
