Rogers and Palmer Deepen United’s Relegation Fears

Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United

Manchester United’s problems worsened after Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a convincing 2-0 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge.

After an evenly contested opening half, Rogers produced a fantastic solo goal five minutes after the restart. Palmer then converted a penalty following Lisandro Martínez’s red card to secure all three points for the Blues.

The defeat extended Manchester United’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions—the club’s longest such sequence since 1984. United remain 17th with seven points, level with Crystal Palace in the relegation zone but ahead on goal difference.

Manchester United Waste Their First-Half Chances

United produced a promising performance during the opening 45 minutes but failed to take advantage of their opportunities.

Bruno Fernandes missed a good chance after being picked out by Bryan Mbeumo, while Amad Diallo was twice denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders. Matheus Cunha also found the net following a corner, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review showed that he was offside.

Chelsea had a goal ruled out as well when EstĂªvĂ£o converted, only for the assistant referee’s flag to cut short the celebrations.

United’s inability to convert their chances left the match goalless at halftime. Chelsea emerged for the second period with greater control, intensity and attacking purpose.

Morgan Rogers Scores Brilliant Solo Goal

The breakthrough arrived in the 50th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Rogers.

Roméo Lavia regained possession in midfield and found the England international, who carried the ball towards United’s retreating defence. Rogers accelerated past Harry Maguire and Martínez before producing a composed finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

It was a fantastic combination of strength, pace and composure from the Chelsea attacker. Rogers celebrated with EstĂªvĂ£o by recreating Neymar’s iconic celebration as Stamford Bridge erupted.

The goal took Rogers to 10 goal contributions in all competitions this season, with six goals and four assists. Only Erling Haaland had registered more at that point.

MartĂnez Red Card Changes the Match

United’s afternoon became even more difficult when Martínez received two yellow cards within four minutes.

His first booking came after a foul on Rogers in the 59th minute. Shortly afterwards, MartĂnez caught Wesley Fofana with an arm inside the penalty area while defending a Chelsea corner.

Referee Peter Bankes initially awarded another corner, but VAR advised him to review the incident. After checking the pitchside monitor, the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed MartĂnez his second yellow card.

United were reduced to 10 players in the 63rd minute, leaving Palmer with the opportunity to double Chelsea’s advantage from the spot.

Cole Palmer Scores 50th Chelsea Premier League Goal

Palmer calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 64th minute, despite Lammens getting a hand to his effort.

The goal was Palmer’s 50th for Chelsea in the Premier League, achieved in his 105th appearance. Only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Diego Costa reached the milestone in fewer games for the Blues.

Palmer’s penalty effectively ended United’s hopes of mounting a comeback. Chelsea controlled possession against the 10 men and continued to create opportunities.

EstĂªvĂ£o appeared to make it 3-0 with a powerful finish, but another VAR review ruled out the goal for a marginal offside. The Brazilian also forced Lammens into two impressive saves as Chelsea searched for a third.

United almost secured a consolation goal during stoppage time when Mbeumo’s powerful strike was tipped against the crossbar by Penders.

Chelsea Return to Winning Ways

The victory provided an important response from Chelsea following their defeat to Tottenham and their Carabao Cup elimination against Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso’s side moved back into the top four with 16 points after nine matches. Chelsea also recorded their first Premier League home victory without conceding in 13 games.

Rogers was the standout performer, but Lavia also played an important role in midfield. He regained possession 14 times—the joint-highest total recorded by any Premier League player in a match this season.

Manchester United Facing a Relegation Battle

United’s situation is becoming increasingly serious. Their nine-game winless sequence consists of three draws and six defeats, while they have failed to score in four of their opening nine league matches.

Michael Carrick’s team have also failed to win any of their first seven away matches in all competitions. The last time United endured such a start on the road was during the 1973/74 season, when they were relegated.

Sitting only above Crystal Palace on goal difference means the possibility of relegation can no longer be dismissed. United urgently need victories, improved discipline and greater efficiency in front of goal.
