Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or Voted the Greatest of All Time

Cristiano Ronaldo’s unforgettable 2008 Ballon d’Or campaign has been voted the greatest in the award’s history through France Football’s new fan-led BOAT initiative.

The Portuguese superstar finished first in the Ballon d’Or of All Time poll, beating Lionel Messi’s record-breaking 2012 year and Ronaldo’s own 2017 triumph. The vote invited supporters to compare specific Ballon d’Or-winning campaigns from some of football’s most decorated players.

Ronaldo’s victory celebrates the remarkable 2007/08 season in which he scored 42 goals for Manchester United, won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, and claimed the first of his five career Ballon d’Or awards.

What Is the BOAT Award?

BOAT stands for Ballon d’Or of All Time. The initiative was overseen by France Football and gave supporters an opportunity to select the greatest winning campaign in Ballon d’Or history.

Voting opened on 1 October and closed on 27 October 2026. Each entry cost €1, and supporters were allowed to vote more than once. Participants were also entered into a draw for tickets to the 2027 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The BOAT recognition is symbolic and does not include a physical trophy. It is separate from the annual Ballon d’Or and the rare Super Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo has therefore not won a sixth competitive Ballon d’Or. The poll instead recognises his original 2008 victory as the most highly rated Ballon d’Or-winning campaign among the participating fans.

Why Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Season Won

Ronaldo’s 2007/08 campaign remains one of the greatest individual seasons produced by a Premier League player.

Operating mainly from the wing, the Manchester United star scored 42 goals in all competitions. He registered 31 Premier League goals as United retained the English title and added eight goals during the club’s successful Champions League campaign.

Ronaldo also delivered in decisive moments. He scored the opening goal with a towering header against Chelsea in the Champions League final in Moscow, where Manchester United eventually won on penalties.

His combination of speed, athleticism, skill, long-range shooting, aerial ability and ruthless finishing made him almost impossible to contain. He could beat defenders on either side, score from free kicks and arrive inside the penalty area like a traditional centre-forward.

The campaign transformed Ronaldo from an outstanding young winger into the world’s leading player. His performances earned him his first Ballon d’Or, beginning a collection that would later include victories in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Ronaldo 2008 Beats Messi 2012

Lionel Messi’s 2012 Ballon d’Or campaign finished second in the BOAT rankings.

Messi’s year is remembered for his extraordinary 91 goals for club and country during the calendar year. He also scored 73 times for Barcelona during the 2011/12 club season, including 50 La Liga goals.

Despite those historic numbers, participating supporters placed Ronaldo’s 2008 season first. Team success may have influenced the outcome because Ronaldo combined exceptional personal statistics with Premier League and Champions League trophies.

The result does not definitively settle the debate about football’s greatest individual season. It reflects the preferences of supporters who voted under the BOAT poll’s paid-entry, multiple-vote system.

Ronaldo and Messi Dominate the Rankings

The final standings highlighted the remarkable influence Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have had on the Ballon d’Or.

The two rivals occupied the first 12 positions. Ronaldo appeared five times, representing each of his victories, while Messi occupied the other seven positions.

Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazário was the first player outside the two modern superstars to appear, with his 2002 victory finishing 13th. His 1997 Ballon d’Or placed 15th.

The list also recognised legendary winners from earlier generations, including Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Franz Beckenbauer, Marco van Basten, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Kevin Keegan and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Ronaldo’s Five Ballon d’Or Victories

Ronaldo’s five Ballon d’Or wins reflect different stages of his development:

  • 2008: The explosive Manchester United winger who conquered England and Europe.
  • 2013: The devastating Real Madrid goalscorer producing extraordinary individual numbers.
  • 2014: A Champions League-winning campaign built around decisive goals.
  • 2016: European champion with both Real Madrid and Portugal.
  • 2017: The leader of a Real Madrid team that retained the Champions League.

His 2008 version remains special because it represented the completion of his transformation at Manchester United. It was the season in which his talent, physical development and tactical understanding came together.

A New Chapter in the Ronaldo-Messi Debate

The BOAT result will inevitably create fresh discussions between Ronaldo and Messi supporters.

Messi owns the record for the most competitive Ballon d’Or awards, while Ronaldo’s longevity, Champions League achievements and success in different competitions remain central to his case in football’s greatest-player debate.

This fan vote does not provide a definitive answer, particularly because supporters could pay for multiple entries. It does, however, demonstrate the lasting popularity and cultural impact of Ronaldo’s Manchester United peak.

Nearly two decades later, the image of a young Ronaldo wearing Manchester United’s number seven shirt—scoring spectacular goals and helping the club conquer Europe—continues to resonate with football supporters.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Legacy Lives On

Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or was already an important part of football history. Winning the BOAT vote gives supporters another reason to revisit a season defined by individual brilliance and major team success.

From 42 goals and the Premier League Golden Boot to triumphs in England and Europe, Ronaldo produced a campaign that combined entertainment, consistency and decisive performances.

The BOAT recognition may be symbolic, but the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 season is very real. According to the fans who participated, it remains the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning campaign of all time.
