Isco Penalty Completes Thrilling Champions League Comeback

Real Betis 3-2 Porto

Real Betis produced a memorable second-half comeback to defeat Porto 3-2 at La Cartuja and maintain their perfect start to the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Abde Ezzalzouli gave Betis the lead shortly after halftime, but Porto responded through Gabri Veiga and Samu Aghehowa to turn the contest around. The home side refused to surrender, with substitute Cucho Hernández scoring the equaliser before captain Isco converted an 84th-minute penalty to secure all three points.

The victory moves Manuel Pellegrini’s team onto six points from their opening two Champions League fixtures. Porto, meanwhile, remain without a point after two matches.

Betis and Porto Trade First-Half Chances

The first half ended without a goal, but both teams created opportunities in an energetic contest.

Betis attempted to control possession through Isco and Marc Roca, while Abde and Antony provided width and direct running. Porto were dangerous when they attacked quickly, with André Silva striking the crossbar during one of the visitors’ best moves.

Porto also thought they had taken the lead before halftime when Martim Fernandes found the net. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review after Borja Sainz was judged to have handled the ball during the build-up.

That decision allowed Betis to enter halftime level before producing a more decisive attacking performance after the restart.

Abde Ezzalzouli Opens the Scoring

Betis needed only two minutes of the second half to break the deadlock.

Marc Roca played a forward pass into Fran García, who held the ball before laying it into the path of Abde. The Moroccan winger shaped his body and produced a brilliant curling finish into the top corner in the 47th minute.

The goal sent La Cartuja into celebration and rewarded Betis for their positive start to the second half. Antony then came close to doubling the advantage, but his effort struck the post.

Missing that opportunity proved costly because Porto produced an immediate response.

Gabri Veiga and Samu Turn the Match Around

Gabri Veiga equalised for Porto in the 54th minute with a dangerous free kick that beat Álvaro Vallés. The strike shifted the momentum and gave the Portuguese visitors renewed confidence.

Porto completed the turnaround seven minutes later. Substitute Samu Aghehowa combined with his teammates around the edge of the penalty area before finishing clinically to make it 2-1.

Within 14 minutes of Betis taking the lead, the home side had fallen behind. Porto appeared to have taken control, but Pellegrini’s substitutions gave Betis the attacking energy required to respond.

Cucho Hernández Delivers from the Bench

Cucho Hernández made an immediate difference after entering the match.

The Colombian forward found space near the edge of the penalty area in the 74th minute and produced a superb curling finish beyond Diogo Costa. The goal restored belief inside La Cartuja and completely changed the momentum of the contest.

Betis pushed forward in search of a winner, with Antony, Isco and Cucho combining effectively around the Porto penalty area.

The decisive moment arrived when Ángel Ortiz was fouled inside the box. After a VAR review, referee Clément Turpin awarded the penalty.

Isco Holds His Nerve to Win It

Isco accepted the responsibility in the 84th minute and calmly converted the spot kick to put Betis 3-2 ahead.

The captain’s winning goal completed an impressive comeback and highlighted his importance to Pellegrini’s team. Isco controlled key periods of the match, created openings for his teammates and delivered when the pressure was at its highest.

Porto searched for a late equaliser, but Vallés produced an important stoppage-time save to protect the lead and secure a famous home victory.

What the Result Means for Betis and Porto

Real Betis now have six points from two matches and a goal difference of plus two. Their perfect start places them firmly in contention for a direct position in the Champions League round of 16.

The result was particularly meaningful because it marked Betis’ first home match in Europe’s leading club competition in more than two decades. Pellegrini’s players responded to the occasion with courage, quality and a refusal to accept defeat after falling 2-1 behind.

Porto are in a much more difficult position. Two defeats from their opening two matches leave the Portuguese side near the bottom of the league-phase standings with a minus-three goal difference.

Francesco Farioli’s team showed quality while scoring twice in seven minutes, but failing to protect the lead will be a major concern. Porto must begin collecting points quickly to keep their knockout-stage ambitions alive.

For Betis, this was more than another victory. It was a statement that the Spanish club belongs on the Champions League stage and possesses the character to compete against established European opposition.
