Barcelona 2-0 Athletic Club
Barcelona continued their impressive start to the 2026/27 LaLiga season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Goals from captain Raphinha and the in-form Fermín López gave Hansi Flick’s side their second victory in two league matches. The evening also featured the much-anticipated Barcelona debut of Rodri, who entered during the second half and received a warm welcome from the home supporters.
Two games, six points, seven goals scored and none conceded—life is certainly good for Barcelona fans.
Barcelona dominate Athletic Club at Camp Nou
Barcelona controlled the match from the early stages, moving the ball quickly and repeatedly stretching Athletic Club’s defence.
Lamine Yamal was heavily involved in the opening exchanges. The young winger fired one attempt over the crossbar before forcing goalkeeper Unai Simón into an excellent save. Simón would become Athletic Club’s busiest and most important player as Barcelona continued creating opportunities.
Raphinha almost opened the scoring when his powerful header struck the post. Pedri then found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside during the build-up.
Barcelona’s pressure finally produced the breakthrough in the 37th minute.
Raphinha delivers another captain’s performance

Pedri dropped into midfield and played a perfectly weighted pass between Athletic Club’s centre-backs. Raphinha timed his run brilliantly, rounded Simón and calmly placed the ball into the empty net.
It was a goal that combined Pedri’s vision with Raphinha’s intelligent movement and composure.
The Brazilian has developed into one of Barcelona’s most dependable attackers under Flick. His ability to press defenders, attack spaces and finish important chances makes him far more than a traditional wide player.
Raphinha’s goal also took him to three league goals for the season, placing him among LaLiga’s early leading scorers.
Despite Barcelona’s dominance, Simón prevented the scoreline from becoming much heavier. The Athletic goalkeeper made another superb save from Yamal before the break, keeping the visitors within one goal at half-time.
Lamine Yamal shines despite missing out on a goal
Yamal did not score, but his performance was another reminder of his extraordinary talent.
The Barcelona winger consistently troubled Athletic’s defence with his dribbling, movement and willingness to shoot. Early in the second half, his long-range effort took a deflection before striking the underside of the crossbar.
He also created opportunities for his teammates and helped Barcelona maintain pressure in the attacking third.
Yamal’s performance demonstrated that a player does not always need a goal or assist to influence a match. His direct running forced Athletic Club to defend deeper, creating additional space for Raphinha, Fermín and the advancing Barcelona midfielders.
Rodri makes his Barcelona debut
One of the biggest moments of the evening arrived in the 62nd minute when Rodri entered the match alongside Dani Olmo.

The midfielder’s debut added greater control and experience to Barcelona’s midfield. Although his first appearance was relatively brief, Rodri circulated possession calmly and began adjusting to the movement of his new teammates.
His arrival gives Flick another world-class option in the centre of the pitch. Rodri’s positioning, passing range and ability to control the tempo could become extremely valuable as Barcelona compete across LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League.
According to Barcelona’s official match report, Rodri’s introduction was one of the most eagerly anticipated moments of the game. His first appearance ended with a victory and a clean sheet—the perfect beginning to his Barcelona career. FC Barcelona
Fermín López continues his brilliant scoring form
Athletic Club nearly equalised when Oihan Sancet struck the post from outside the penalty area, reminding Barcelona that the contest was not yet over.
However, Fermín López ended the visitors’ hopes in the 82nd minute.
Substitute Karim Adeyemi delivered a dangerous cross from the left. The ball took a deflection off Aymeric Laporte and fell kindly to Fermín, who reacted quickly to finish from close range.
The goal continued Fermín’s outstanding start to the season. Like Raphinha, the midfielder now has three league goals and has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most dangerous attacking options.
His energy, late runs into the penalty area and natural finishing ability give Flick something different in midfield. Fermín may not always receive the same attention as Barcelona’s biggest stars, but his contribution is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Unai Simón prevents a Barcelona rout

The final score did not fully reflect Barcelona’s attacking dominance.
Flick’s team registered 22 shots and created approximately 3.9 expected goals, while Athletic Club managed only five attempts and 0.22 expected goals. Simón produced eight saves to prevent Barça from recording a much larger victory. beIN SPORTS
Barcelona also struck the woodwork twice and had one goal ruled out for offside. These numbers highlight the attacking quality and intensity Flick’s players displayed throughout the match.
At the other end, Barcelona remained organised and recorded another clean sheet. The champions have now scored seven goals without conceding across their opening two LaLiga fixtures.
What the victory means for Barcelona
Barcelona have collected the maximum six points from their first two matches and sit at the top end of the LaLiga table with an impressive goal difference.
More importantly, the team already appears confident, balanced and hungry. Raphinha and Fermín are scoring regularly, Pedri is controlling matches, Yamal continues to create danger and Rodri has now joined the available midfield options.
The victory also extended Barcelona’s impressive home league run. Flick’s side have now won 20 consecutive LaLiga matches at home, underlining how difficult it has become for visiting teams to earn points at Camp Nou.
Barcelona will next face Rayo Vallecano as they attempt to make it three wins from three.
