Manchester City 2-4 PSG
Paris Saint-Germain delivered a major Champions League statement by defeating Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium, strengthening their belief that a historic third consecutive European title is possible.
First-half goals from Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha put the reigning champions in complete control. Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City attempted a second-half comeback, but Maghnes Akliouche’s fourth goal ensured PSG returned to Paris with all three points.
Doué and Dembélé both finished with a goal and an assist, Vitinha controlled the midfield and found the net, while Akliouche scored for the second consecutive match.
The result gives PSG six points from their opening two league-phase games and places Luis Enrique’s side at the top of the Champions League standings. Manchester City remain on three points after suffering their first defeat in eight matches.
PSG Stun Manchester City with Explosive Start
PSG arrived in Manchester as back-to-back European champions, but this performance showed that their hunger has not disappeared. The visitors attacked with speed, precision and confidence, scoring twice within two first-half minutes.
Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a rapid move from one end of the pitch to the other. Fabián Ruiz found the young French winger on the left, allowing him to cut inside and drive a low shot beyond former PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City were still attempting to recover when PSG struck again in the 15th minute. Dembélé switched the play towards Doué, who controlled the ball and delivered a cross towards the far post.
Dembélé continued his run, escaped his marker and headed into the bottom corner. The combination gave both PSG attackers a goal and an assist before the match had reached the quarter-hour mark.
Vitinha Dominates the Etihad Midfield
Manchester City struggled to contain PSG’s intelligent movement through midfield. Vitinha dictated the speed of the game, constantly offered a passing option under pressure and helped the visitors progress through City’s defensive shape.
The Portuguese midfielder crowned his performance with PSG’s third goal in the 32nd minute.
Achraf Hakimi had just struck the post when Paris quickly recovered possession. Akliouche helped continue the attack before Warren Zaïre-Emery produced a clever backheeled pass into Vitinha’s path.
Vitinha finished confidently to make it 3-0, leaving the Etihad crowd stunned and Manchester City facing a huge halftime deficit.
PSG could have added more before the interval. Hakimi found dangerous positions on several occasions, while Donnarumma was forced into saves as the visitors’ positional rotations repeatedly opened spaces in City’s defence.
Haaland Leads Manchester City Fightback
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca reacted with three halftime substitutions, introducing Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye. The changes gave the home side greater intensity and produced an immediate improvement.
Haaland reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute with an outstanding header from Ndiaye’s cross. The Norwegian striker directed the ball into the far corner to give City hope and lift the home support.
However, PSG restored their three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute.
Dembélé supplied Akliouche outside the penalty area, and the summer signing turned before firing a low shot beyond Donnarumma. It was Akliouche’s second goal in as many matches, further demonstrating why his arrival is already looking like an excellent piece of business for the Parisian club.
Akliouche Goal Ends City’s Comeback Hopes
City continued attacking after falling 4-1 behind. Enzo Fernández struck the post, Haaland headed against the crossbar and Nuno Mendes cleared a Joško Gvardiol effort off the line.
Haaland eventually scored his second goal in the 75th minute following good work from Bouaddi. The goal made it 4-2 and gave City renewed belief, but Matvey Safonov produced a crucial late save to prevent the striker from completing his hat-trick.
PSG also had an opportunity to score a fifth after Nuno Mendes was fouled inside the penalty area. Ferran Torres took the resulting spot kick, but Donnarumma saved his former teammate’s effort.
City finished with 27 attempts and nine shots on target, but PSG’s ruthless first-half performance and Akliouche’s important fourth goal proved decisive.
Dembélé and Doué Shine for PSG
Dembélé and Doué were at the centre of PSG’s most dangerous attacks. Their pace, movement and ability to exchange positions caused serious problems for the City defence.
Doué showed composure to score the opening goal before supplying Dembélé’s header. Dembélé then created the fourth goal for Akliouche, completing a performance that demonstrated both his finishing and creative qualities.
Behind them, Vitinha controlled possession while Zaïre-Emery provided energy, intelligence and defensive support. PSG’s ability to combine technical quality with relentless movement made them extremely difficult to contain.
Can PSG Win Three Champions League Titles in a Row?
PSG won their first Champions League title by beating Inter Milan in the 2025 final before successfully defending the trophy against Arsenal in 2026.
They are now attempting to become only the second club in the Champions League era to win three successive titles, following Real Madrid’s achievement between 2016 and 2018.
Winning at the Etihad does not guarantee another trophy, but it sends a powerful warning to every European rival. PSG defeated one of the competition’s strongest squads away from home while displaying the depth, intensity and attacking variety required to go all the way again.
With two victories and a strong goal difference after two league-phase matches, the champions have made an excellent start to their title defence.
Manchester City, meanwhile, must recover quickly. Their improved second-half display showed resilience, but conceding three goals before halftime left them with too much work to do against an opponent of PSG’s quality.
