Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History: Goals at Six World Cups and 146 for Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has strengthened his status as one of football’s greatest record-breakers by becoming the first man to score at six different FIFA World Cups.

The Portuguese superstar found the net at every tournament from Germany 2006 to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States. He also holds the men’s international goals record with an incredible 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.

Ronaldo’s combination of goals, longevity and consistency across more than two decades has created two records that may prove extremely difficult for future generations to break.

Players Who Have Scored at the Most World Cups

Ronaldo claimed the outright record by scoring twice during Portugal’s 5–0 victory over Uzbekistan at the 2026 World Cup. Those goals made him the only male footballer to score in six editions of the competition.

Ronaldo’s Remarkable World Cup Scoring Journey

Ronaldo’s World Cup story began in 2006 when he scored against Iran. At 21, he was part of a talented Portugal team that reached the semifinals.

He added one goal at the 2010 tournament in South Africa and another during the 2014 edition in Brazil. His most productive World Cup before 2026 came in Russia in 2018, where he scored four times—including a memorable hat-trick against Spain.

Ronaldo converted a penalty against Ghana at Qatar 2022, becoming the first man to score at five different World Cups.

Four years later, the 41-year-old extended his record by striking twice against Uzbekistan. He became the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history, behind Cameroon legend Roger Milla.

After Portugal’s elimination by Spain in the round of 16, Ronaldo confirmed that the 2026 tournament had been his final World Cup.

Messi Scored at Five of His Six World Cups

Lionel Messi also appeared at six World Cups, but he scored in five.

The Argentine found the net in 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. His only tournament without a goal was South Africa 2010.

Messi nevertheless holds the record for the most World Cup appearances, playing 34 matches across six tournaments. He scored 21 World Cup goals, including eight during the 2026 edition.

His performances in 2026 temporarily took him past Miroslav Klose’s former record of 16 World Cup goals. However, Kylian Mbappé finished the competition with 22, moving one ahead of Messi at the top of the all-time World Cup scoring chart.

Ronaldo’s World Cup record is therefore different from the overall scoring record: Mbappé has the most goals, Messi has the most appearances, while Ronaldo has scored in the most separate editions.

Pelé, Klose and Seeler Scored at Four World Cups

Before the Ronaldo–Messi era, scoring at four different World Cups represented one of football’s greatest longevity records.

Brazilian legend Pelé achieved the feat in 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970. He remains the only player to win three men’s World Cups.

German striker Miroslav Klose scored at four consecutive tournaments between 2002 and 2014. His 16-goal total remained the men’s World Cup record for 12 years before Messi and Mbappé passed it in 2026.

Uwe Seeler also scored in four editions for West Germany, finding the net at every tournament from 1958 to 1970.

Their records demonstrate how difficult it is to remain at the highest international level across multiple World Cup cycles.

Most International Goals in Men’s Football

Ronaldo’s success is not restricted to the World Cup. He is also the highest-scoring player in the history of men’s international football.

According to UEFA’s September 2026 update, the leading scorers are:

PositionPlayerCountryGoalsAppearances
1Cristiano RonaldoPortugal146234
2Lionel MessiArgentina125207
3Ali DaeiIran108148
4Sunil ChhetriIndia95157
5Romelu LukakuBelgium93133

Ronaldo made his senior Portugal debut in 2003. Although he failed to score in his first two appearances, he subsequently registered at least one international goal in 23 consecutive calendar years.

He broke Ali Daei’s long-standing international record in September 2021, scoring twice against the Republic of Ireland. Ronaldo has since continued extending the record, establishing a 21-goal advantage over Messi.

The Updated International Scoring Standings

The supplied graphic shows Sunil Chhetri with 89 goals, but UEFA’s updated September 2026 statistics list the Indian striker on 95 international goals. That places him fourth, ahead of Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku.

Robert Lewandowski and Malaysian legend Mokhtar Dahari are both listed on 89 international goals, while Harry Kane has climbed to 85.

These totals illustrate the different forms that international goalscoring greatness can take. Ronaldo and Messi built their records across World Cups, continental championships, qualifiers, Nations League fixtures and international friendlies.

Can Ronaldo Reach 150 International Goals?

With 146 goals, Ronaldo is only four away from becoming the first male footballer to score 150 international goals.

Reaching that landmark would add another chapter to a career already filled with historic achievements. However, selection, fitness and Portugal’s remaining fixtures will determine whether he receives enough opportunities.

Even if Ronaldo finishes short of 150, his current record already represents an extraordinary achievement. A future challenger would need to average 10 international goals per year for almost 15 years simply to approach his total.

A Record-Breaking International Legacy

Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career has stretched across multiple football generations.

He played at six World Cups, scored in every one, became Portugal’s leading World Cup scorer and helped his country win major international trophies. His 146 goals and 234 appearances also place him at the top of both men’s international record lists.

Mbappé may now lead the overall World Cup scoring chart, while Messi owns the appearances record, but Ronaldo stands alone as the only man to score at six different World Cups.
