Barcelona Make La Liga History With a Perfect Start
Barcelona’s numbers tell the story of a team dominating the opening stage of the season.
The Catalan giants have won all nine of their La Liga matches, giving them 27 points from a possible 27. They have also scored a remarkable 39 league goals—an average of more than four goals per game.
Their latest match provided everything supporters could want: spectacular goals, red cards, VAR drama and another Barcelona victory. Even when matches become chaotic, Flick’s players continue to find a way to win.
Barcelona’s attacking performance has been equally impressive across all competitions. They have scored 48 goals in 11 matches and have already registered five or more goals in a single game on six occasions.
Raphinha leads the scoring chart with 14 goals, followed by Lamine Yamal with eight and FermÃn López with five. Karim Adeyemi has contributed four, while Gabriel Jesus has scored three.
João Cancelo and Anthony Gordon have two goals each, with Pedri, Xavi Espart and Jules Koundé also getting on the scoresheet.
The range of contributors demonstrates that Barcelona are not dependent on one player. Raphinha may be the leading scorer, but Flick possesses attacking threats throughout his squad.
Atlético Madrid Lead the Pursuit
Atlético Madrid are Barcelona’s closest challengers after collecting 22 points from nine matches.
With seven wins, one draw and one defeat, Atlético have produced an excellent start of their own. They have also won their last five league matches, establishing the consistency required to remain involved in the title race.
Diego Simeone’s side have scored 19 goals and conceded eight. Their defensive record remains strong, although their attacking output is significantly lower than Barcelona’s.
Atlético currently trail the leaders by five points. That gap is manageable at this stage of the campaign, but they must maintain their winning run and take advantage of any Barcelona slip.
Their immediate objective will be to continue collecting points while keeping Real Madrid behind them.
Real Madrid Remain Within Striking Distance
Real Madrid sit third with 21 points, one behind Atlético and six behind Barcelona.
Los Blancos have won seven of their nine league matches but suffered two defeats. Those dropped points explain why they are chasing Barcelona despite scoring 23 goals and conceding only nine.
Real Madrid recently produced an entertaining 4–1 victory over Sevilla, with Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande delivering spectacular goals.
Mbappé scored twice, including an audacious Panenka, while Diomande registered a goal and an assist. That result provided an important confidence boost ahead of El Clásico.
The next meeting between Real Madrid and Barcelona could become a defining early moment in the title race. A Madrid victory would reduce the gap to three points, while another Barcelona win would give Flick’s side a commanding nine-point advantage over their rivals.
For Real Madrid, El Clásico represents an opportunity to stop Barcelona’s perfect run and completely reopen the championship battle.
Real Betis Quietly Build an Impressive Campaign
Real Betis occupy fourth place with 19 points, only two behind Real Madrid and three behind Atlético.
Their greatest strength has been an outstanding defensive record. Betis have conceded only four goals in nine league matches—the best record among the current top five.
With six wins, one draw and two defeats, Betis have demonstrated that they deserve to be part of the early conversation near the top of the table.
Although they may not possess the same attacking firepower as Barcelona or Real Madrid, their defensive organisation gives them a strong foundation. If Betis continue limiting opponents to so few goals, they can compete for Champions League qualification and potentially place additional pressure on the top three.
Real Sociedad Complete the Top Five
Real Sociedad sit fifth after earning 16 points from nine games.
They have recorded five wins, one draw and three defeats while scoring and conceding 17 goals. Their neutral goal difference highlights the main area requiring improvement.
Sociedad have shown enough attacking quality to challenge for European qualification, but they must become more reliable defensively. Their three-point gap behind Betis is recoverable, although greater consistency will be needed to remain in the top five.
How the La Liga Title Race Stands
Barcelona are the clear early favourites because of their perfect record and extraordinary attacking numbers. Their +30 goal difference is almost three times Atlético Madrid’s +11 and more than double Real Madrid’s +14.
However, the championship is not decided after nine matches.
Atlético possess the strongest recent league momentum alongside Barcelona, having won their last five games. Real Madrid have the individual quality to reduce the gap, especially with El Clásico approaching.
The current points gaps are:
- Barcelona lead Atlético Madrid by five points.
- Barcelona lead Real Madrid by six points.
- Atlético Madrid lead Real Madrid by one point.
- Real Betis are two points behind Real Madrid.
- Real Sociedad are three points behind Real Betis.
The next few weeks could determine whether Barcelona pull away or whether Atlético and Real Madrid can turn the campaign into a close three-team battle.
Barcelona Turn Their Attention to PSG
Barcelona must now switch their focus to the Champions League, where Paris Saint-Germain provide their next major challenge.
The PSG fixture will test Flick’s squad depth and his ability to manage players during a demanding period. Barcelona enter the game in sensational form, but they must balance their European ambitions with the need to protect their perfect domestic record.
Their attacking numbers suggest they can trouble any opponent. The bigger challenge will be maintaining defensive concentration against PSG’s quality while preserving energy for the La Liga title race.
La Liga Title Race: Who Has the Advantage?
Barcelona unquestionably hold the advantage. Nine victories, 39 league goals and a five-point lead represent a nearly flawless beginning to the campaign.
Atlético Madrid remain the nearest challengers, while Real Madrid’s attacking quality and upcoming El Clásico opportunity mean they cannot be dismissed. Betis are also close enough to apply pressure if any of the top three experience a poor run.
For now, however, La Liga belongs to Barcelona. Flick’s team are scoring freely, winning consistently and setting the pace at the top of Spanish football.
