GPL Matchday 7
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League title race has tightened significantly after an eventful Matchday 7 featuring victories for FC Samartex, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.
FC Samartex produced the weekend’s biggest result by beating defending champions Medeama SC 2–1 at the Nsenkyire Arena. Christian Agyenim scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to end Medeama’s unbeaten start and move Samartex level with the league leaders on 14 points.
Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways with a 2–1 home victory over Young Apostles, while Hearts of Oak defeated Vision FC 1–0 through Kwesi Asmah’s late goal.
Following the weekend’s results, Medeama, Hearts of Oak and Samartex are tied on 14 points after seven matches, with goal difference separating the top three.
FC Samartex 2–1 Medeama: Agyenim Scores Dramatic Winner

The highly anticipated Western derby remained goalless throughout the first half before Samartex finally found the breakthrough.
Joshuah Fuseini opened the scoring in the 54th minute, putting the hosts in front and increasing the pressure on the reigning champions.
Medeama responded in the 79th minute when Dominic Amponsah found the net to level the match. With the score at 1–1, the league leaders appeared set to preserve their unbeaten record and return home with a point.
However, Christian Agyenim delivered the decisive moment three minutes into stoppage time. His late goal secured a memorable 2–1 victory for Samartex and sparked wild celebrations at the Nsenkyire Arena.

The result moved Samartex level with Medeama and Hearts of Oak on 14 points. It also confirmed Samartex as genuine early title contenders after seven rounds of the campaign.
Medeama remain top because of their superior goal difference, but their lead has disappeared. The defending champions must now respond after suffering their first defeat of the season.
Asante Kotoko 2–1 Young Apostles: Porcupine Warriors Return to Winning Ways
Asante Kotoko collected three important points with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Young Apostles at the Baba Yara Stadium.
After a goalless first half, Hubert Gyau gave Kotoko the lead in the 70th minute. Solomon Nsoh Asaah doubled the advantage 11 minutes later, putting the Porcupine Warriors in control.
Young Apostles refused to surrender and reduced the deficit through a late Iddrisu Huzaif free-kick. Kotoko protected their narrow advantage during the closing stages to secure the victory.
The win takes Kotoko to 11 points from seven matches. They sit eighth in a tightly packed group, level on points with Port City and Swedru All Blacks but behind both teams on goal difference.
Although Kotoko remain three points behind the league leaders, the congested table means they are still within reach of the early title race. Greater consistency will now be required if the Porcupine Warriors are to climb towards the top positions.

Vision FC 0–1 Hearts of Oak: Late Asmah Goal Lifts Phobians
Hearts of Oak maintained their strong start by recording a valuable 1–0 away victory against Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.
Vision resisted the Phobians for most of the match, but Kwesi Asmah eventually made the breakthrough in the 86th minute. His late goal earned Hearts all three points and moved them level with Medeama at the top.
Hearts have collected 14 points from seven matches, winning four, drawing two and losing one. They have scored eight goals and conceded only two, giving them the joint-best goal difference in the division.
Their defensive performance has been central to their promising start. With only two goals conceded, Hearts currently possess the strongest defence in the Ghana Premier League.
The Phobians are second only because Medeama have scored more goals.

Ghana Premier League Table After Matchday 7

The standings are extremely close. Only three points separate leaders Medeama from eighth-placed Kotoko, leaving several clubs with a realistic opportunity to enter the title conversation.
Three Teams Level at the Top
Medeama, Hearts of Oak and Samartex each have 14 points, creating an exciting three-team battle at the top.
Medeama remain first with 13 goals scored and seven conceded. Hearts have recorded the same +6 goal difference but sit second after scoring eight and conceding two. Samartex are third with nine goals scored, five conceded and a +4 goal difference.
Aduana are only one point behind the leading group after winning four of their opening seven matches. Basake Holy Stars sit fifth on 12 points, while Kotoko are only three points away from first place despite occupying eighth.
Matchday 7 has therefore opened the title race rather than creating a clear favourite.
Samartex’s victory demonstrated that Medeama can be beaten. Hearts continue to build their challenge on defensive strength, while Aduana and Kotoko remain close enough to take advantage of any dropped points.
Pressure Grows Near the Relegation Zone

At the bottom of the table, Vision FC, Young Apostles and Dreams FC occupy the relegation positions.
Vision and Young Apostles both have six points, while Dreams remain last with three points after failing to win any of their opening seven fixtures.
Vision have now suffered consecutive defeats, while Young Apostles face increasing pressure after losing five of their seven matches. Dreams’ late equaliser against Port City earned them a valuable point, but they urgently need their first victory.
What Matchday 7 Means for the GPL Title Race
The championship battle is now finely balanced.
Medeama remain top, but their stoppage-time defeat has removed the small advantage they held over the chasing teams. Hearts of Oak’s defensive strength makes them serious challengers, while Samartex have gained momentum from defeating the champions.
Aduana, Basake Holy Stars and the three clubs on 11 points cannot be ignored either. With only three points separating the top eight, one weekend of results could completely transform the table.
For Kotoko, the victory over Young Apostles provides a platform from which to rebuild their challenge. For Samartex, the dramatic win over Medeama could become a defining moment in their season.
The GPL title race is wide open—and Matchday 8 now carries even greater importance.
