Cody Gakpo scored a spectacular stoppage-time equaliser as the Netherlands fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany in their UEFA Nations League opener at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
The highly anticipated encounter marked the beginning of two exciting managerial eras. Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández took charge of the Netherlands for the first time, while Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp made his debut as Germany head coach.
Felix Nmecha appeared to have delivered the perfect start for Klopp after scoring in the 32nd minute. However, Gakpo denied his former Liverpool manager a debut victory by converting Ruben van Bommel’s brilliant outside-of-the-foot cross in the 92nd minute.
Felix Nmecha Scores First Goal of the Klopp Era
Germany started the match with intensity, pressing aggressively and looking dangerous whenever they attacked the Dutch defence.
The Netherlands thought they had taken the lead after only 12 minutes when captain Virgil van Dijk headed home from a Tijjani Reijnders corner. However, following a VAR review, the goal was disallowed after Brian Brobbey was judged to have impeded German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
Klopp’s side eventually broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Karim Adeyemi continued playing while Brobbey was down injured and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Nmecha reacted quickly and finished from close range to score the first goal of the Klopp era.
The circumstances surrounding the goal frustrated the Netherlands, but Germany had played to the referee’s whistle and took full advantage of the opportunity.
Netherlands Dominate the Second Half
Xavi’s Netherlands improved significantly after the interval and placed Germany under sustained pressure.
The Dutch finished with 22 shots, including 10 on target, while Germany managed 10 attempts and only two on target. The Netherlands also won 12 corners compared to Germany’s one, highlighting their territorial dominance.
Ter Stegen was outstanding in the German goal, producing nine saves to keep the hosts from equalising earlier. Denzel Dumfries repeatedly created danger from wide areas, while substitute Mexx Meerdink struck the woodwork and missed another promising opportunity.
Despite dominating possession and chance creation, it appeared that Xavi’s first match would end in defeat.
Ruben van Bommel Makes an Instant Impact
The defining Dutch moment arrived through Ruben van Bommel, the son of former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel.
Making his senior international debut, the PSV youngster showed confidence beyond his experience. He won possession from Serge Gnabry on the left before producing a beautiful trivela cross with the outside of his right foot.
Gakpo met the delivery first-time and fired the ball beyond Ter Stegen to make it 1-1 in the 92nd minute. The goal was the first scored by the Netherlands under Xavi and rewarded their relentless second-half pressure.
Guus Til even had an opportunity to complete the comeback moments later, but his header went wide as the two European rivals settled for a point each.
Havertz and Brobbey Suffer Injury Concerns
The entertaining match was unfortunately overshadowed by injuries to Kai Havertz and Brian Brobbey.
Havertz was forced off around the half-hour mark after taking a knock during a challenge involving Quinten Timber. Reports also indicated a possible muscular problem, although further assessment will be required to establish the severity of the injury.
Brobbey later left the pitch with what appeared to be a hamstring or muscle injury. His problem became a major talking point because Germany scored while the Dutch striker was still down on the field.
Both Germany and the Netherlands will hope the two forwards recover quickly, while Arsenal and Sunderland will also await their respective medical updates.
Encouraging Signs for Xavi and Klopp
Although neither coach secured a victory, both Xavi and Klopp can take positives from their opening performances.
Germany demonstrated the pressing intensity and direct attacking football traditionally associated with Klopp during the first half. However, they struggled to maintain control after the break and became increasingly dependent on Ter Stegen and their defenders.
For Xavi, the Netherlands’ second-half display offered plenty of encouragement. The Oranje controlled the game, created numerous chances and continued attacking until Gakpo finally produced the equaliser.
Van Bommel’s fearless debut was another major positive for the Dutch. His creativity and confidence could make him an important member of Xavi’s new-look national team.
