Mbappé and Valverde scored as Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2-1, with Thibaut Courtois producing decisive saves at the Bernabéu.

First-half goals from Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde placed José Mourinho’s team in control before Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit in the 77th minute. Thibaut Courtois then produced an important late save to protect all three points.

Madrid were clinical when Inter made costly defensive errors, but the visitors controlled possession and created enough opportunities to make the finish uncomfortable for the 15-time European champions.

Inter Start Strongly but Gift Madrid the Lead

Inter opened with confidence and immediately tested Madrid’s defensive organisation. Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez forced Courtois into early saves as Cristian Chivu’s side moved the ball with purpose.

However, their promising start was undone by a mistake in the 14th minute. Curtis Jones played a poor pass that placed Yann Bisseck under pressure, allowing Brahim Díaz to regain possession and release Mbappé.

The French forward remained composed and rolled his finish beyond Josep Martínez to give Madrid the lead.

Valverde Punishes Another Error

Inter’s second mistake arrived only nine minutes later. Goalkeeper Martínez delayed while attempting to play from the back despite Valverde closing him down aggressively.

The Uruguayan dispossessed the goalkeeper and converted the opportunity, doubling Madrid’s advantage in the 23rd minute.

Inter had competed well but found themselves two goals behind because of errors rather than sustained Madrid pressure. Their possession became less valuable whenever carelessness presented the hosts with direct routes towards goal.

Martínez responded impressively before halftime. Mbappé accelerated beyond Inter’s defence and forced a low save before the goalkeeper somehow blocked Jude Bellingham’s close-range follow-up.

End-to-End Second Half

Bellingham should have added Madrid’s third after Díaz worked his way into the penalty area and delivered an inviting cross. The England midfielder attempted to control the ball instead of heading immediately, giving Martínez enough time to recover and make the save.

Courtois remained busy as Inter searched for a route back. He pushed away Alessandro Bastoni’s low effort, while Thuram and Lautaro continued testing Madrid’s defensive concentration.

The hosts created opportunities on the counterattack but repeatedly failed to finish the contest. Martínez denied Mbappé again, Díaz curled narrowly wide, and Bisseck produced an excellent sliding tackle to stop Vinícius Júnior.

Carlos Augusto Restores Inter Hope

Inter finally found their reward in the 77th minute. Bisseck moved the ball towards Lautaro, who delivered a dangerous cross across the penalty area.

Carlos Augusto attacked the delivery ahead of Denzel Dumfries and finished past Courtois to reduce the score to 2-1.

The goal changed the atmosphere inside the Bernabéu and forced Madrid to defend with greater urgency. Inter increased their pressure while Mourinho introduced fresh players to protect the advantage.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan almost equalised in the 89th minute with a long-range effort that took a deflection. Courtois reacted sharply and pushed it away, producing the decisive save of the night.

Real Madrid vs Inter Statistics

The reported match statistics show that Inter controlled more of the ball and attempted more shots despite losing.

Statistic
Real Madrid
Inter Milan

The figures underline the difference between controlling territory and controlling decisive moments. Madrid punished two first-half errors, while Courtois prevented Inter from converting their pressure into an equaliser.

Courtois Proves Decisive

Courtois was Madrid’s most influential performer. His early saves allowed the hosts to survive Inter’s energetic start, and his late stop from Mkhitaryan protected the victory.

Winning Return to Europe for Mourinho

The victory carried additional meaning for Mourinho, who previously guided Inter to Champions League glory in 2010 before beginning his first spell with Real Madrid.

His current team entered this match after losing to Real Betis in La Liga. Securing three points against strong opponents therefore represented an important response, even though the performance exposed defensive concerns.

Conclusion

Real Madrid were not dominant, but their ruthlessness and Courtois’ goalkeeping secured a valuable opening victory. Inter created more opportunities and controlled possession, yet two avoidable errors proved decisive.

Mourinho will welcome the points while recognising the need for improvement. Madrid’s European campaign has started positively, but stronger control will be required as the competition develops.
