Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat Porto 2-0 to give Enzo Maresca a winning Champions League debut as City coach.

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City opened the 2026/27 Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.

The Norwegian recovered from several missed first-half chances to score two minutes after the restart before sealing the result in stoppage time. The victory gave Enzo Maresca a winning Champions League debut as City head coach.

City dominated statistically and stopped Porto from registering a shot on target, but their performance lacked consistency after the opening goal.

Diogo Costa Frustrates City

Manchester City controlled most of the first half but repeatedly encountered an inspired Diogo Costa in the Porto goal.

Antoine Semenyo provided the first warning in the 16th minute, curling an effort into Costa’s gloves. Five minutes later, Semenyo found Phil Foden, whose cross presented Haaland with a major opportunity, but Costa produced an excellent save.

Haaland headed another inviting Semenyo cross over the bar in the 27th minute. Foden then tested Costa after a skilful run around the penalty area.

The goalkeeper’s finest intervention arrived in the 31st minute. He blocked Haaland’s low drive from inside the box and recovered immediately to deny Rayan Cherki from the rebound.

Despite City’s territorial superiority, the score remained goalless at halftime. Haaland could easily have completed a first-half hat-trick, while Porto’s defensive resilience and Costa’s reactions kept the hosts level.

Haaland Makes the Breakthrough

Haaland required only two second-half minutes to repair the damage caused by his earlier misses. Enzo Fernández advanced down the left and delivered an accurate cross towards the striker.

The Norwegian used his strength to hold off Jakub Kiwior before guiding a header against the post and into the net. The goal rewarded City’s pressure and finally defeated Costa.

Porto responded positively. Gianluigi Donnarumma collided with Pepe inside the penalty area shortly afterwards, but an offside flag against the winger meant no penalty was awarded.

Alan Varela then curled narrowly wide from the edge of the box in the 57th minute. It was Porto’s first attempt of the match and reflected their growing confidence.

City became less secure in possession as the hosts pressed more aggressively. Donnarumma was almost caught with the ball by William Gomes, but it ran behind before the forward could punish the mistake.

The visitors survived that uncertain period without allowing a shot on target. Their defensive structure remained strong enough even when their passing became careless.

Haaland Seals Victory Late

Rayan Aït-Nouri nearly doubled City’s advantage in the 85th minute but steered his attempt wide from a promising position.

The substitute made amends during the first minute of stoppage time. He reached the byline and delivered a precise cutback for Haaland, who finished confidently to end Porto’s resistance.

Haaland’s second was his 36th Champions League goal for Manchester City, drawing him level with Sergio Agüero as the club’s leading scorer in the competition.

Porto vs Manchester City Statistics

The match figures published by Sky Sports demonstrate the scale of City’s control.

City’s 20 attempts and 10 shots on target show they deserved to win. Their four missed big chances explain why the contest remained uncertain until stoppage time.

Maresca Earns Important First European Win

The result gave Maresca his first Champions League victory as Manchester City manager. Winning at the Dragão was significant because Porto had not previously lost at home during the 2026 calendar year.

The Sky Sports match report nevertheless highlighted City’s loose passing after taking the lead. Better opposition may punish similar errors.

Players Who Shaped the Match

Haaland was the decisive figure because his two finishes turned dominance into victory. Fernández supplied the opening assist, while Aït-Nouri made a productive impact from the bench.

Costa was Porto’s outstanding performer. His eight saves prevented a far heavier defeat and ensured the home side remained within one goal until added time.

Manchester Derby Comes Next

City now turn their attention to Sunday’s Manchester derby against United at Old Trafford. That fixture will provide a demanding test of the concentration and composure missing during parts of the Porto victory.

What the Result Means for Ugandan Supporters

For Manchester City supporters in Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara and across Uganda, the victory provided an encouraging start to another Champions League campaign. Haaland’s two goals reinforced his status as City’s principal match-winner, but the uneven performance showed that Maresca’s developing team still has work to do. Ugandan fans will now turn their attention towards Sunday’s Manchester derby, where City’s concentration, passing and defensive discipline will face a much stronger examination at Old Trafford.

End Note

Manchester City were not always fluent, but a 2-0 away victory represents an excellent beginning to their European campaign. Their control, chance creation and clean sheet provided solid foundations.

Haaland’s finishing ultimately separated the teams, while Costa prevented an emphatic scoreline. Maresca secured the result he needed, although the Manchester derby will reveal whether City can combine efficiency with a more complete performance.
