Lamine Yamal scored twice as Barcelona tore apart Valencia at the Mestalla, extending their perfect start to the season and opening up a three-point lead at the top of La Liga. The dominant away performance at Mestalla was another chapter in what is quickly becoming a statement start to the campaign for Hansi Flick’s side, and gave Ugandan La Liga fans a Sunday afternoon result worth savouring.

Match Summary

Barca made the perfect start, going ahead in style with a sixth-minute opener. Fermin’s clever ball played in Yamal, who produced a first-time flick from an acute angle into the roof of the net, only to see the goal ruled out for a very narrow offside.

Barcelona were purring, and the opener duly arrived in the 22nd minute. Anthony Gordon teed up Fermin Lopez from inside the area, and the midfielder unleashed a fierce drive into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

The visitors continued going for the kill. Yamal should have doubled the lead before the break but shot off target, while Fermin also came close to a second when Stole Dimitrievski produced a fine save to turn his effort onto the post.

Barcelona Pull Away After the Break

Raphinha extended Barca’s lead in the 50th minute, and with the game comfortably won, Hansi Flick began managing his squad ahead of a midweek Champions League fixture, bringing on Karim Adeyemi for Gordon and Andreas Christensen for Pau Cubarsi.

The changes did nothing to slow the visitors down. Substitute Dani Olmo got into the box and unselfishly squared for Pedri, who rifled the ball home from close range in the 79th minute to make it 4-0.

Yamal Completes His Brace

With 11 minutes left on the clock, Yamal put the finishing touches on a dominant afternoon. Having been denied earlier by the offside flag, he completed his brace with a powerful finish in the 85th minute, capping a rout that Valencia had no answer for from start to finish.

It was Barcelona’s fourth straight league win of the season, and a performance built on total control; the visitors created more than a dozen clear-cut chances over the 90 minutes against a Valencia side that never found a foothold.

What the Result Means for Barcelona

Barcelona’s win came with extra incentive attached. Arch-rivals Real Madrid had suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Real Betis the previous evening, ending Jose Mourinho’s own perfect start in charge. That slip-up opened the door for Barca to pull three points clear at the summit, and Flick’s side made sure to take full advantage with their most emphatic display of the young season.
