Madrid had won their opening three league games, but a combination of missed chances, Valles’ outstanding goalkeeping and Betis’ resilience handed the visitors their first defeat of the campaign.

For Real Betis, it was a statement victory. Manuel Pellegrini’s side matched Madrid on nine points from four matches and found a way to defeat one of Europe’s most feared attacks despite spending long spells under pressure.

Real Betis vs Real Madrid: Match Summary

Result: Real Betis 1-0 Real Madrid

Competition: La Liga, Matchweek 4

Venue: La Cartuja, Seville

Goal scorer: Troy Parrott, 81 minutes

Key moment: Álvaro Valles saved Kylian Mbappé’s stoppage-time penalty

Madrid began aggressively and created several clear opportunities, but they could not find the decisive touch. Vinícius Júnior struck the post after a well-worked move involving Arda Güler, while Mbappé was denied on more than one occasion by Betis’ defence and goalkeeper.

The visitors continued to carry the greater attacking threat, but Betis stayed in the game. Their patience was rewarded nine minutes from time when Parrott reacted quickest to a rebound after Thibaut Courtois had saved from a set-piece situation. The Irish forward fired home to send La Cartuja into celebration.

Madrid still had one final opportunity to rescue a point. Mbappé stepped up for a penalty deep into stoppage time, but Valles guessed correctly and made the save that secured one of Betis’ most memorable recent victories.

Kylian Mbappé fires a shot on goal as the Real Betis goalkeeper dives to make the save during their LaLiga encounter. Courtesy picture

Troy Parrott Delivers the Decisive Moment

Parrott’s 81st-minute winner was the defining moment of the match. Introduced from the bench, the striker showed the sharp instinct required in a tight match by following in the rebound from Courtois’ save and converting when Madrid’s defence failed to clear.

It was a major goal for Parrott and for Betis. The hosts had defended with determination, but they also took their chance at exactly the right time. Against a team packed with attacking quality, that ruthless finishing separated them from Real Madrid.

The official La Liga match record confirms Betis’ 1-0 victory and the late drama surrounding the goal ruled out by VAR.

Valles Becomes Betis’ Hero

While Parrott scored the winner, goalkeeper Álvaro Valles was the outstanding figure of the night. He produced important saves throughout the match and then held his nerve in the most pressurised moment possible: a stoppage-time penalty against Mbappé.

Valles had already frustrated Madrid’s forwards before the penalty. Mbappé was denied twice in one first-half attack, while Vinícius and Dean Huijsen also came close. His penalty save confirmed the result and transformed a hard-fought defensive performance into a famous win.

For a Betis side preparing for Champions League football, Valles’ display was a reminder that their ambitions are supported by a goalkeeper capable of producing match-winning moments.

Why Real Madrid Lost

Real Madrid will be frustrated because they had enough chances to win the match before Betis scored. Mourinho’s side began quickly, controlled lengthy periods and regularly reached dangerous positions. Yet they were unable to turn dominance into goals.

Mbappé, Vinícius and Güler all threatened, but Madrid lacked the calmness needed in front of goal. The missed penalty was the clearest example of an evening in which nothing fell their way.

Mourinho introduced Bernardo Silva, Yan Diomandé and Trent Alexander-Arnold in search of a late breakthrough, but the changes could not overturn Betis’ lead. Madrid also saw a late equaliser ruled out for offside, adding to the feeling that the visitors had been punished for their wastefulness.

The defeat does not erase Madrid’s encouraging start to the season, but it does expose a familiar truth: possession and chances only matter when they are converted.

Real Betis players celebrate after taking the lead against Real Madrid, as a dejected Real Madrid player walks away in the background. Courtesy picture

Mourinho’s First Defeat

Mourinho had warned before the match that Real Madrid would need to be at their best to beat Betis. His words proved accurate.

The Portuguese coach’s return had begun with three straight league wins, but Betis brought that run to an end with a disciplined performance. Mourinho’s challenge now is to ensure that the defeat becomes a lesson rather than a damaging setback, especially with the Champions League campaign about to begin.

Madrid face Inter next in Europe, while Betis prepare to meet Lille. The timing means both sides must quickly move on from an emotionally draining contest.

What the Result Means in La Liga

Betis’ victory lifted them level with Madrid on nine points after four league games. It is early in the campaign, but the result reinforces the idea that the La Liga title race will not be straightforward.

For Madrid, the setback encourages their rivals. Mourinho’s team remains one of the favourites, but their first loss shows that even a squad filled with elite attacking talent can be stopped through organisation, belief and a goalkeeper in top form.

For Betis, the victory can energise their domestic and European seasons. Taking three points from Real Madrid gives the squad proof that they can compete with the league’s strongest sides.

Courtesy picture

Betting Insight and BangBet Uganda

The match was a reminder for Ugandan bettors that football betting should never be treated as certain.
