Uganda were scheduled to face Ethiopia across two legs in the opening qualifying round. The first leg was planned for September 20, 2026, before the return fixture on October 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the tie will no longer take place after FUFA confirmed that it could not fully finance the team\u2019s participation while government resources are being prioritised for Uganda Cranes\u2019 preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision ends Uganda\u2019s U23 AFCON campaign before a ball is kicked and removes an important generation of young players from the pathway towards continental and Olympic football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUFA Confirms Painful Withdrawal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In its official announcement<\/a>, FUFA described the withdrawal as a painful but necessary decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The federation explained that the Government had prioritised Uganda Cranes\u2019 preparations for AFCON 2027 during the 2026\/27 financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uganda will co-host the senior continental tournament with Kenya and Tanzania, placing significant financial and organisational demands on the three East African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsidering that the Government has prioritised the Uganda Cranes\u2019 preparations for AFCON 2027 for FY 2026\/27, it is only imperative that this decision is painfully made now than later,\u201d FUFA said in the statement quoted by Kawowo Sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUFA added that the withdrawal affects the previous generation of Uganda\u2019s U20 men\u2019s team. The federation promised to provide further information about the participation of other national teams as discussions with the Government continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopia Tie Cancelled<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Uganda entered the first round of the qualification campaign against neighbouring Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The withdrawal could also affect player exposure. Strong performances in CAF competitions often attract attention from professional clubs, scouts and agents across Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several players from Uganda\u2019s recent youth teams have already progressed towards senior international football. The affected age group contains footballers who require competitive opportunities to prove that they are ready for the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest withdrawal is not the first time financial limitations have stopped Uganda from participating in U23 AFCON qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, FUFA withdrew the Kobs from the qualifiers for the 2023 U23 AFCON, also citing insufficient funds. Uganda had been scheduled to meet Guinea in the second qualifying round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
