Manchester City sign Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for a record-equalling £125m fee on a five-year contract until 2031.

Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for £125 million, matching the British transfer record.

The 25-year-old Argentina midfielder has agreed a five-year contract that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until summer 2031. The fee equals the amount Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak in 2025.

City Secure a Proven Winner

City completed the deal after dramatic deadline-day negotiations with their Premier League rivals.

The official Manchester City announcement presents Fernández as a complete midfielder with the technique, work rate and versatility to contribute in different systems.

He reunites with Enzo Maresca, who coached him at Chelsea before becoming Manchester City manager in 2026.

Fernández said City’s recent success, squad quality and ambition attracted him. He arrives with experience of high-pressure matches and major tournaments.

Why Manchester City Needed Fernández

City’s midfield has changed following the departures of players including Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

Fernández brings control, vision, aggression and the ability to move possession through pressure. He can operate deep, play in a central partnership or advance into attacking positions.

His range of passing suits City’s possession-based approach, while his late movement into the penalty area provides another scoring threat.

Fernández registered 15 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances for Chelsea during 2025/26. That output showed his development from a deep organiser into a midfielder capable of influencing matches near goal.

Competition will be strong, but his Premier League experience makes him a leading candidate to start immediately.

Chelsea Lose an Important Leader

Chelsea’s official farewell confirmed that Fernández departed after making 170 appearances and scoring 31 goals.

The Blues signed him from Benfica in January 2023 for approximately £106.8 million, shortly after he helped Argentina win the World Cup.

Chelsea have secured a significant profit, but selling an established midfielder to a direct domestic rival carries sporting risk.

Their situation worsened when Monaco withdrew from a proposed deal for Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara, who had been targeted as Fernández’s replacement. Chelsea therefore closed the window without directly filling the gap.

The remaining midfielders must replace his passing, leadership and goals. The decision will face greater scrutiny if Fernández helps City finish above Chelsea or win the Premier League.

Fernández’s Career and Trophies

Fernández developed at River Plate before gaining senior experience on loan with Defensa y Justicia.

He won the Copa Sudamericana in 2020 and Recopa Sudamericana in 2021 with Defensa. He then returned to River and helped the club win Argentina’s league title and Trofeo de Campeones in 2021.

Benfica signed him in 2022. Months later, Fernández played a central role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph and received the tournament’s Young Player Award.

At Chelsea, he won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. He also lifted the 2024 Copa América with Argentina and helped his country reach the 2026 World Cup final.

How Fernández Fits Under Maresca

Maresca prefers midfielders who can receive possession in tight spaces and break pressing lines. Fernández is comfortable collecting the ball from defenders and finding teammates with progressive passes.

He can partner a defensive midfielder or dictate play from deeper areas. His long-range shooting, set-piece delivery and ability to arrive late in the box add variety to City’s attack.

The challenge will be adapting to new teammates and producing consistently under the pressure created by his record-equalling fee.

Verdict

Manchester City have invested a record-equalling fee in a midfielder entering his prime and proven at the highest level.

Fernández gives Maresca creativity, control and experience during an important squad transition. Chelsea receive a major fee but lose a leader to a direct competitor without securing their intended replacement.

For Ugandan supporters, the transfer strengthens an already fierce rivalry and creates another compelling storyline in the battle for Premier League supremacy.
