Liverpool remain without a Premier League victory under Andoni Iraola after Victor Muñoz rescued a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Forest twice led through Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White, but Alexander Isak and Muñoz responded for the hosts. Both teams collected their second draw of the 2026/27 league season, leaving their search for a first victory to continue.

Forest Punish Liverpool’s Poor First Half

Nottingham Forest produced the stronger opening and repeatedly troubled Liverpool with direct passes behind the defence.

Jérémy Jacquet made an important early block to prevent Igor Jesus from converting Ndoye’s knockdown. Ndoye then headed another opportunity wide before opening the scoring in the 24th minute.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels launched the move with a long clearance. Jesus and Gibbs-White helped move the ball towards Ndoye, who finished across Alisson into the bottom corner.

Florian Wirtz appeared to equalise eight minutes later, but the goal was disallowed after VAR ruled Jeremie Frimpong offside before providing the assist.

Sels denied Wirtz again by tipping his header over the crossbar. Alisson then made an excellent save to push Jesus’ powerful attempt onto the woodwork shortly before half-time.

Isak Scores First Liverpool Equaliser

Liverpool returned after the interval with greater intensity and eventually levelled in the 60th minute.

Cody Gakpo created the goal by beating Neco Williams and delivering a low cross through the six-yard area. Isak converted from close range for his first Premier League goal of the season.

The equaliser appeared to shift momentum towards Liverpool, but Forest responded ten minutes later. A quick throw released Williams into the penalty area, where he went down following contact with Alisson.

The referee awarded a penalty, and Gibbs-White sent the Brazilian goalkeeper the wrong way to restore Forest’s advantage.

The decision generated debate, but VAR did not consider the referee’s original call a clear error. The Sky Sports match report noted that Liverpool were also frustrated by an apparent electronic-board problem that delayed planned substitutions before the penalty.

Muñoz Rescues Liverpool

Muñoz delivered the final decisive moment in the 82nd minute. Wirtz found the Spanish winger, whose powerful turning shot took a slight deflection off Murillo before striking the underside of the crossbar and crossing the line.

It was Muñoz’s first Premier League goal for Liverpool. He had moved to the right wing shortly before scoring, demonstrating the versatility that could make him valuable in Iraola’s system.

Dominik Szoboszlai nearly completed Liverpool’s comeback three minutes later, but his free kick narrowly missed the target.

The official Liverpool highlights report confirmed that Forest took the lead twice before Isak and Muñoz responded for the hosts.

Match Statistics Highlight Forest’s Threat

Liverpool enjoyed a better second half, but the underlying numbers supported Forest’s belief that they could have won.

According to Opta Analyst’s match statistics, Forest generated 2.3 expected goals, compared with Liverpool’s 1.61.

Muñoz led Liverpool for shots, attempted dribbles and duels contested. He also became the 11th Spanish player to score for the club in the Premier League.

Gibbs-White continued his impressive form at Anfield. The Forest captain now has three goals and two assists at the stadium in Premier League competition.

Liverpool have drawn their opening two league matches for only the second time in 14 seasons. They also started with consecutive draws in 2022/23.

Verdict

Nottingham Forest deserved credit for their brave, direct performance and may feel they allowed two points to escape. Liverpool improved significantly after the break, but their slow start and defensive vulnerability prevented Iraola from securing his first league victory.

Isak’s goal and Muñoz’s energetic performance provide encouragement, yet Liverpool must produce greater consistency across an entire match if they are to turn entertaining draws into victories.
