Bruno Fernandes wins the 2026 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award after recording nine goals and a Premier League-record 21 assists.

Fernandes received English football’s leading player-voted individual honour at the 53rd annual PFA Awards in Manchester on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The Professional Footballers’ Association confirmed Fernandes as the winner after votes from fellow professionals.

Fernandes Delivers a Record-Breaking Campaign

The Portuguese midfielder produced nine goals and 21 assists in the Premier League, playing a central role as Manchester United recovered from an inconsistent opening half of the season to finish third under Michael Carrick.

His 21 assists established a new single-season Premier League record, surpassing the previous benchmark of 20 shared by Arsenal great Thierry Henry and former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

According to Sky Sports’ PFA Awards report, Fernandes’ creativity helped United secure Champions League qualification after a difficult start.

First Manchester United Winner Since Wayne Rooney

Fernandes became the first Manchester United footballer to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award since Wayne Rooney in 2009/10.

The achievement also completed an exceptional individual season. Fernandes had already collected the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and the Premier League Player of the Season honour.

After receiving the PFA trophy, Fernandes described the recognition as a proud moment because the votes came from opponents who competed against him throughout the campaign.

His success also represents personal vindication after several seasons in which his productivity was sometimes overshadowed by United’s inconsistent team performances. The 2025/26 campaign finally combined his individual output with a league finish.

Fernandes Beats Strong Arsenal and Manchester City Challenge

The official PFA six-player shortlist featured Fernandes alongside Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki, plus Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhães and David Raya.

Haaland won the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 27 goals, while Cherki impressed during his first campaign in English football.

Arsenal’s nominees were rewarded for helping the Gunners win their first Premier League title in 22 years. Raya secured his third consecutive Golden Glove, Gabriel anchored the league’s strongest defence, and Rice influenced matches in several midfield roles.

Fernandes overcoming that competition shows how highly professionals valued his record-breaking creativity and influence on United’s Champions League return.

Other Major PFA Award Winners

Manchester City striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw won the women’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for the second time. She scored 21 league goals, claimed a third consecutive Women’s Super League Golden Boot and helped City win the title.

What the Award Means for Ugandan United Supporters

For Manchester United supporters across Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, Mbarara and other Ugandan communities, Fernandes’ award provides a talking point before the new season.

Many local fans gather at sports bars, fan-club meetings and neighbourhood viewing centres. The captain’s recognition offers encouragement that United possess an elite creative leader capable of influencing their Champions League return and domestic ambitions.

However, individual awards do not guarantee future trophies. United must build a balanced team around Fernandes and maintain the consistency that powered their recovery under Carrick.

Fernandes deserved the award after producing a historic creative season while driving Manchester United back into the Champions League places.
