Rams RFC completed a remarkable unbeaten campaign by defeating Platinum Credit Heathens 12-10 in the men’s final of the 2026 Kyadondo 7s at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds on Sunday, August 23.

The Mulago-based club overcame defending National 7s champions Walukuba Barbarians and Black Pirates before edging hosts Heathens in a tense final. The result delivered Rams their first circuit title since 2016 and lifted them from ninth to sixth in the overall standings.

The Kyadondo event, staged on August 22-23, was the third of six scheduled stops in the 2026 Uganda Rugby 7s Series, featuring 12 core men’s teams.

Rams entered the third stop of the National 7s Series as outsiders after finishing 11th at the opening Stone City 7s and sixth at the Rujumba 7s.

They immediately demonstrated improvement with a 24-7 victory over Mongers on the opening day. Rams then earned an important draw against Black Pirates after Ryan Thierry Jjuuko kicked the ball into touch to secure two competition points.

Their unbeaten pool-stage performance created the platform for a memorable knockout run. Rams eliminated 2025 series champions Walukuba 22-14 before facing Pirates again in the Main Cup semifinal.

Opileni and Jjuuko Inspire Semifinal Victory

Rams dominated Pirates 19-5 in the semifinal. Hosanna Opileni scored a hat-trick of tries, giving Pirates’ defence few opportunities to recover.

Jjuuko produced another outstanding moment from a scrum inside Pirates’ 22-metre area. After receiving Edrine Obbo’s pass, he used two dummy switches to beat defenders and accelerate towards the wing before completing an exceptional individual try.

The victory confirmed that Rams’ group-stage draw with Pirates was not an isolated performance. They combined structured set-piece play, quick support and confident finishing to eliminate one of Uganda’s strongest sevens teams.

Semakula Decides Tight Final Against Heathens

The final was much closer. Yusuf Semakula scored twice for Rams, capitalising on favourable bounces and showing the speed and awareness required to convert difficult opportunities.

Lawrence Ssebuliba responded with two unconverted tries for Heathens, but the hosts could not find the additional points needed to move ahead. Rams protected their narrow advantage and secured a 12-10 victory.

Semakula was named the Kyadondo 7s men’s Most Valuable Player after scoring six tries across the two-day tournament, including both Rams tries in the final. According to New Vision’s tournament report, coach Jude Rwakayange praised his players for executing their plan and improving at each circuit.

What the Victory Means for Rams

Winning at Kyadondo represents a major step in Rams’ development. Their route to the trophy included victories over Walukuba, Pirates and Heathens, three clubs with strong domestic records and considerable National 7s experience.

The Kawowo Sports report confirmed that Rams climbed three positions to sixth in the standings. Rwakayange now wants his team to maintain its progress and challenge for a first overall National 7s championship.

However, one circuit victory does not guarantee success across the remaining tournaments. Rams must reproduce their defensive discipline, fitness and knockout composure when the series moves away from Kyadondo.

Thunderbirds Reclaim Women’s Title

Thunderbirds defeated She Wolves 24-7 to win the women’s competition. Gertrude Kateesa was named women’s MVP after scoring 11 tries during the tournament.

Rams and Thunderbirds each received a trophy and UGX 1 million. The event attracted 20 men’s and women’s clubs, highlighting the expanding competitiveness of Ugandan sevens rugby.

Rams’ Kyadondo triumph was built on consistency, fearless attacking rugby and composure against established opponents. Opileni’s semifinal hat-trick, Jjuuko’s creativity and Semakula’s decisive finishing powered their unexpected title run.

The official Uganda Rugby schedule places the Lawirwodi 7s in Gulu on August 29-30. That fourth stop will show whether Rams can transform their Kyadondo breakthrough into a sustained championship challenge.
