Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2 as Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers gave Xabi Alonso a winning start to the Premier League season.

Chelsea opened the 2026/27 Premier League season with a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24, giving Xabi Alonso a winning start.

Joao Pedro scored inside a minute before Josh King equalised. Debutant Morgan Rogers restored Chelsea’s lead, and Cole Palmer added a third after halftime. Gonzalo Garcia replied, but Chelsea survived late pressure to secure three points in the West London derby.

Chelsea needed only 32 seconds to open the scoring. Maxence Lacroix won an aerial challenge, and Palmer produced a clever first-time pass that released Joao Pedro behind Fulham’s defence. The Brazilian controlled the ball before calmly lifting his finish over Bernd Leno.

The early goal settled Chelsea, with Palmer and Rogers combining effectively as Lacroix advanced confidently from defence.

Fulham improved and equalised in the 23rd minute. King exchanged passes on Chelsea’s left, entered the area and drove a low shot beyond Robert Sanchez at the near post. Sanchez should have stopped the effort.

Chelsea responded positively. Joao Pedro volleyed narrowly wide from Palmer’s delivery, while Leno denied Reece James and Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea’s second arrived in the 41st minute. Palmer found Lacroix, who moved past Jorge Cuenca and crossed from the byline. Joao Pedro missed the delivery, but Rogers arrived behind him and swept the ball home on his competitive debut.

According to NBC Sports’ match report, Chelsea registered 13 first-half attempts and five shots on target, earning a 2-1 halftime lead.

Palmer Adds Chelsea’s Third Goal

Palmer remained influential after the restart, dribbling beyond several Fulham defenders before curling narrowly wide.

In the 49th minute, Rogers redirected Sanchez’s pass towards Joao Pedro. The Brazilian advanced and waited for Palmer’s overlapping run before releasing him. Palmer then slotted it through Leno’s legs.

Palmer and Joao Pedro both finished with a goal and an assist. Their combination play demonstrated the attacking quality available to Alonso.

Fulham Capitalise on Sanchez Mistakes

Fulham reduced the deficit five minutes later. Sanchez stopped Timothy Castagne’s initial shot but pushed the rebound into a dangerous area, enabling Premier League debutant Garcia to head home.

Sanchez’s involvement in both Fulham goals attracted criticism. Gary Neville argued that Chelsea should consider strengthening the goalkeeping position because repeated errors could undermine the team’s progress, according to the Metro report.

King later shot wide, Antonee Robinson missed an attempted lob, and Sanchez denied substitute Ryan Sessegnon. Joao Pedro had a late goal disallowed for offside, but Chelsea successfully protected their narrow advantage.

What the Win Means for Alonso and Chelsea’s EPL Hopes

The result gives Alonso an encouraging foundation and suggests his tactical system can unlock Chelsea’s attacking talent. Rogers adapted quickly, Joao Pedro led the line intelligently, and Palmer influenced the match from central and wide positions.

After finishing 10th last season, Chelsea require greater consistency to return to European competition and challenge near the top of the Premier League. One victory does not establish them as title contenders, but collecting three points away from home is a valuable start.

Alonso must now improve Chelsea’s defensive control and determine whether Sanchez provides sufficient reliability in goal. Addressing those weaknesses will be essential if the Blues are to maintain a serious top-four challenge.

Conclusion

Chelsea’s important victory clearly demonstrated their considerable attacking potential. Palmer controlled decisive moments, Joao Pedro combined scoring with creativity, and Rogers enjoyed a memorable debut.

However, Fulham’s response and Sanchez’s errors ensured the contest remained uncertain until full time. Alonso has started with an important victory, but Chelsea must become more secure defensively if they are to turn an exciting opening performance into a successful Premier League campaign.
